I want Katchkan to teach a class, any class, please please please!
How about mystery classes, like Chatelaine does. We get told a list of materials to get and then we all crochet along and a new bit gets revealed each week. That would work great for afghans or doilies.

Afghan stitch is also known as the Tunisian stitch, which is the topic of our introductory class. :)
I don't think you made it in before I had to close class registration, but don't worry. I'm pretty sure we'll be able to get Kim to teach this class again.

Don't feel bad. :) I'm not sure if Tunisian is a relatively new name for it or not. I haven't really used this stitch since I was in high school, but all I knew it by back then was the afghan stitch. And I called the hook an afghan hook.

1. I LOVE this idea too! Although Kathy makes herself very readily available for any of her patterns we may be working on.
2. I also love the idea of a graph class. Not cross-stitching on preexisting pieces, but working the yarn into the pattern.
3. A class for lefties? Since I learned it totally backwards, I'd love to learn how to do it the correct way!

3. A class for lefties? Since I learned it totally backwards, I'd love to learn how to do it the correct way!
I'm not sure what you mean by learning backwards. :)
Crocheting left-handed naturally results in some of your finished pieces turning out backwards from those of right-handed people, since lefties naturally crochet in the opposite direction of righties.
But did you learn something about the crochet stitches themselves that's backwards? Or did you learn right-handed, meaning that's backwards from how a leftie should crochet?
I'm a lefty, too, and I crochet left-handed.
If you can clarify for my poor little brain what backwards means, I'll know better what you're really looking for in a class for lefties.

How about a class on teaching certain stitches that many people find difficult? Maybe one of the cable stitches. We'd be taught how to hook a scarf made with cable stitches.
Also, maybe a class on the fundamentals of increasing/decreasing, but using a fairly complex stitch pattern, not just the basics like double crochet stitch. I'd love to made triangle shawls using complex stitch patterns but I can't wrap my mind around increases in that context.
I could go on and on..........:P

ahh yes, "The Cable stitch" Pain the the buudy this one, I find it so difficult. That would be a nice one to teach. What's great is there are lots various cables to teach. They're almost all difficult for me! lol.
I spent sooo much time working on the cable to try to conquer it :blush

Is there a way to do that or not?
And I am so new to this crochet board.....how to do you teach a class online?
Kim will be sharing a tip to keep it from rolling in her online class. If you didn't get to register for this class, I'm pretty sure she'll be teaching more tunisian classes in the future. :)
Here's a brief rundown on how we anticipate the online classes working.
Each class will be divided into a number of weekly lessons, depending on what the teacher prefers.
Each lesson will be posted as a new thread in the classroom folder. The lesson materials will also be at the discretion of the teacher. Some may include a pattern, either posted in the thread or as a link to where you can download it. It could just be information posted in the thread. The teacher might include photos or even links to video clips. The lesson materials for each class will be different.
Once a week's lesson has been posted, class members will be able to post any questions or problems they're having as a response to that thread. The teacher will then provide answers to the questions, within a 24 hour period. The teacher won't be hanging out in the classroom all the time, ready to answer each question as it's posted. Instead, the teacher will probably read the thread at least once each day, responding to all questions and concerns. When the next week's lesson is posted, the previous week's lesson thread will be closed. All questions will then be asked in the current week's lesson thread, including any questions related to the previous week's lesson. This will help to make things easy for the teacher, so he/she only has to look through one thread for questions. (In the case of a very long class, it could be cumbersome to look through 6 weeks of threads for questions, for example.)
The thread for the last class lesson will be closed one week after it is posted, just like all the other lesson threads. After that time, the teacher will no longer be available to answer any questions. (Just like if they'd gone back home after teaching a class in the store.) In case some students haven't finished their project or haven't finished accessing class materials, the classroom will be left open for two more weeks, so students have more than adequate time to save any class materials they may need.
The lesson threads should be strictly limited to questions/issues you're having with the class itself, that need to be addressed by the teacher (or perhaps admin if there's a technical issue we need to correct).
Now, we know part of the fun of a class is all the talking and sharing you can do with your fellow class members during the actual class. So each classroom will also have a thread for general chit-chat. Members can talk about anything they want in this thread. They can post pictures of their progress to share with other class members. They can ask questions of other members about the class (but don't expect a teacher response in this thread). The only limitation to posts in this thread is that if you have official questions for the teacher, don't post them here, post them in the class lesson thread. (Oh, yeah, and that pesky thing about observing forum guidelines. :lol) The teacher may or may not participate much in this chit-chat thread: it will depend on how much time the teacher has available and how many questions he/she is having to respond to in the lesson thread(s). The chit-chat thread will remain open for the entire time the classroom is open, including the two weeks after the lesson threads have all been closed. The teacher will not be required to come back to the classroom after the last lesson thread has been closed.
Okay, I think I've covered about everything. Or at least everything I was able to think of that might happen in class. Of course, there could be potential snags in this system that I haven't thought of. And that's why we're offering this trial class, to see whether this system is as workable as we think it is.
If anybody reading this thread sees potential problems with this setup, please go ahead and address them now. Maybe we can correct something prior to the class starting. And if class members see problems once the class has started, we'll do our best to address and correct them then. Hopefully any issues that occur will have an easy solution so this format will work. If not, well, not much has been lost. But I really think it will work. :)

Someone mentioned crocheting from a graph...I would love to learn how to make an image in my crochet! Changing colors in the middle of the row.
Maybe a class to make a sweater? Whether it's a children's or adults...

Ideas keep popping out of my head!
SOCKS! Let's have a class for making socks! Winter is coming and my feet are asking for socks!
Also, hairpin lace! My eyes cross when I look at those instructions.
I wish I were proficient enough in something to teach, but alas, (looking about my house) making a mess seems to be my greatest "talent".....:D
It's a great idea to start a running list of ideas. Maybe we could have a poll to see which classes would be next, once teachers with stout constitutions and nearly endless patience could be drafted!!

Sue, thanks for the suggestion. But then people's responses would be limited to the options I chose to include in the poll answers. I might not choose the things people are really interested in.
I think I'd rather have people just give suggestions as they think about them in this thread. I can then go back and collate the data quite easily. Honestly, it really isn't a problem for me to do that. :)

Hi, Maria...I'm on the same page as you are...entrelac, though - isn't that similar (or the same as) tapestry/graph crochet? I do graphghans, but the true tapestry crochet I wish I could do better...and I'd like to stay on this site to learn!:manyheart ...and I am becoming more of a "threadie"...but hate the thought of blocking a big piece:eek

September 27, 2007, 09:14 AM
I'd like a class in color, if that makes any sense. You know - how to choose colors for a project, what goes together, what clashes, what is complementary, etc.
So many times I see an afghan or a purse or something and hate the colors but love the pattern and then have no idea what colors to substitute, so I either never start it, or I start it, hate the colors I've chosen, and it becomes a UFO.
Also along those lines, a basic class in picking the proper yarns would be good. I've got a few UFOs that are in that state b/c I chose the wrong substitute yarn and the garment turned out too heavy and stiff. I'm better than I was, but I'm by no means excellent at it yet.

To me, blocking thread is much easier than blocking yarn! The pins hold everything in place quite nicely. And yarn is too stretchy. Actually, blocking is a breeze as long as your gauge is correct. Not that you have to make a swatch, but you have to know what hook size you need for the thread you are using. For instance, I stitch very tightly, so I usually go up two sizes on my hook. Then everything lays flat and pins easily.

I would like to take a class on Tunisian crochet, crocheting socks, or any type of purse or tote.

I'd love to see something on tapestry crochet as well as anything to do with basic pattern altering.
I'm a big woman who wears 2x-3x depending on the fitting and so many patterns end at L or 1x. Would love to get some pointers on that other than experimenting with doing the math to increase the number of pattern repetitions or chain loops at the beginning.
Am new to this whole forum, so there may be other sources already available here that I just haven't found, though a class would be fun and keep me focused on the item being made (I can't say I have tons of UFOs but certainly enough to be worrisome...) :)

I missed the first round of classes in January. I'd love to take both of Kathy's filet classes. I haven't tried filet before and want to get my feet wet!

I take it that there are not going to be any more classes since everything related to the classes was deleted? Please start again if possible. Thanks.

My understanding is that the old is making way for the new. There is some reorganization going on in an effort to get the new classes scheduled.

I would love to see a class on making items with motifs and joining motifs as you go. I see some lovely wearables and table runners that made with motifs but can't seem to make the jump.
Thanks!

I would like all classes offered to be available in pdf format. Cutting and pasting to save instructions is a pain.

Classes on tunesian... specifically all the tangle of yarn in the back. how to weave in a jungle of yarn ends. What about if you only have one stitch of a color. How do you get that one stitch to stay in place and weave it in. I did one large Tunisian afghan and the back has about a gazillion long strands to be woven in. One stitch of black around everything along with a white background. It is unsitely. Looks like a mop head on the back. Don't know what to do.

I loved Kim's garment shaping class.
I must have missed this one. Any chance it will be offered again in the future? Or any design classes? I'm a "budding" designer and need all the help I can get! :hook

Wow....is this one hard to make, lol. I tried to make the daisy square several months ago. I was on round 5 or 6, I think, and just could not get it right so gave up on it. Might have been on round 6 or 7....heck, can't remember, lol. I would love to see some tutorials on making this square.
I also lost the pattern when I had to reinstall windows...ugh!!!

I posted this is the other class thread, too but... I'd like to see a class on crocheting from a graph. I'd love to figure that out some day! :P
This is something I am definately interested in learning as well! I want to create my own graphs and learn how to crochet them, like names and designs etc..I hope this is offered soon!

Don't know what the name being used now is, but way back when I first learned, it was tapestry crochet. I have forgotten how to do some of the key stitches and especially crocheting backwards on the return row.
Would love some teaching and guidance in this technique.

Here are links to some of Carol's books on amazon. I'd love to have her teach a class here one day! Any interest?

Since you seem to be asking more for a refresher, than to get started, you may find what you need in Carol Ventura's domain:

There is also excellent information and such in her current books.

:lol Duh!!! And I am usually one of the first to research stuff on the net.
Thank You for the link. Just what I needed to refresh my memory.
But you are right that a class is a better idea for beginners.
Amy has a post for those who are interested in classes for their Tenn. retreat. So anyone who is into detailed work and a very satisfying art, should definitely think about learning it. Wish I could go, but I don't drive and not healthy enough to be good company. I would love to get into spinning.

Another thought on classes that is simpler (once learned) and creates beautiful items is what is referred to as Bruges Lace, Serpentine lace, or (the name it was given when I learned it) Ribbon Lace. Making the ribbon is easy. The part that requires work is shaping the scrolls of ribbon into an item you want to create.
Just a thought for some of you out there.

How about a Beginner KNITTING class. I know there are a great many people who do both knitting and crocheting. I'm trying to teach myself and with no one showing me, I am not making much progress.

I always had the same problem. That is why there is an unfinished ripple and some yarn in a lot together. I think this is a very good idea!

I know what you mean!!!:( I can do pineapples, filet, tunisian, squares and all different ways to join them, socks, edgings, wearables, baby stuff, but put a ripple/zig-zag in front of me, and my stomache starts doing flip flops anticipating the aggravation. I've been told it's all in the counting, but they still look like they are taking off in different directions. I wind up doing box stitches as they resemble mini ones. :lol

I missed the class where you learned 6 different ways to use the single crochet stitch. I was not able to take it at that time and was so disappointed that I missed it. I don't remember who taught it, but it was recently. Any chance of a repeat?
