I know there's nothing for free in crochet like that.

But there might be for knit...check these (I can't remember if any are laceweight or not):

The new "I Do" shrug from Knitty, I'm thinking, was thin yarn. And, also linked to on KPC's shrug page is the new "Staff Shrugs" from Interweave...

I hope you find something!

Check out this discussion about the cocoon sweater (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=734&page=1&pp=10).

In general,
1. make a chain as wide as your daughter's back.
2. work in rows until the piece is big enough so that when folded in half from top to bottom, the holes on the ends of the tube are the same size as her arms.
3. Work each end of the tube in the round to form the sleeves

The big opening in the middle is the body of the piece.

I hope I made some sense. Choose a nice stitch to make the shrug really stand out.

I wish someone had spelled this out for me before I started my cocoons.:)

the Shoulderette link didn't work, but I found the Shoulder Shawl with Sleeves
Plain & Fancy Needlework, 1916 (http://www.crochettreasures.com/freepatterns/shouldshawl.htm). Is that the same one?
