i am looking for patterns for squares for an afghan for my sil, I dont want to do a normal granny square at least not for all of them, what are some easy squares taht work up quick, perhaps a diamond (or turned square) in a square i would prefer free or inexpensive

On that 4 generations square, it looks like you are actually making 4 different layers that are joined one on top of the other to form the pattern? It is pretty, but that seems to me like a lot of yarn and effort for the diamond effect.
There are a number of very pretty squares in 200 Crochet Blocks by Jan Eaton.....free at the library!
Here are a few squares I have not made--can't vouch for the patterns--but I have bookmarked.
