View Full Version : Anyone want to help with a comfortghan?

Hello everyone.
I have met (online) A family who seems to be going through an awful lot right now. The Mother is in the hospital dieing from Breast Cancer. There are other things going on that I don't feel at liberty to discuse.
But I was thinking that a comfortghan or two might give them a lift. :hug I was thinking one for the mother, and then maybe one for the 17 year old daughter.
I hesitated to post this, because I don't know if she will be willing to give me her address. But if she doesn't we could always send them to someone else in need.
Anyone want to help? If enough people volunteer then I'll go on to yarn type, color and pattern.
Prayers would also be appreciated. The family name is Norten.
Thanks!

How very sad. It is tragic to lose a loved one at any age. Just let me know what type, size and color you want and I will shift my projects around and make this priority one.

Count me in for some squares. I think they should be pink....pink is the color of the Cure For Her cancer ribbon. At least for the mother anyways. Just post the requirements and I'll get busy.

Thank you all for responding.

I think what I might do is email the gal and tell her we would like to make a comfortghan for the family and ask what colors she would like. Because, I have no guarenty of getting her address and I think it's only reasonable to tell her why I want it. And also, with her mother just passing from cancer I would want to check on the pink. I don't think there shoud be a problem using it, but just want to make sure. Anyone opposed to this? Let me know. Thanks so much for your responses! :hug

I am having an awfully hard time picking out a pattern. There are a lot of square patterns on crochet pattern centeral. I don't want one that's too plain, but not one that's too difficult either. Any suggestions?

What about this one?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v34/faithpa76/Projects/DSC03078c.jpg (http://www.geocities.com/cdjsimon/cygnus.html)

I just tried that one and it took me just under two hours even with five million kid-sized interruptions (I know not easy to see w/ the variegated - I just grabbed the skein that was on top - the pic on the pattern page is much clearer). It strikes a nice "simple but not boring" balance.

There are quite a few pretty ones on the site Andrea directed you to, the dreamcatcher one is nice and looks like it would be pretty easy to work up.

Editing to add that I did a second one and it only took an hour - amazing how much time those interruptions take! Pics on my blog - I did a solid color this time so you can really see the pattern.

That is a pretty one Faith, I also like the dream catcher square. Amber, could you find out any personal favorites of the family or the mother to make it more special (ie favorite color, or flower).? This is going to be great.I can't wait to start.

Hi Amber
I don't know if you'd be interested in 12 inch squares, but here's a really pretty one that is simple, but has a nice pattern to it .

You could pick a size the square should be, like 7 in or 12 in, and then let everyone pick their own sq, that way you get a variety...just a suggestion ;) That is what we do at Heartmade Blessings anyway. There is one size for squares and that way a person could also be a beginner, and still help out. :)
By the way, it is wonderful what you are doing.

Why don't you pick a size the square should be, like 7 in or 12 in, and then let everyone pick their own sq, that way you get a variety...

That's what I've typically seen done, too. Whatever you decide though, Amber, I'm interested in joining if you need more people.

I'd be interested, I have some pink worsted weight around here that I'm not doing anything with and can work nearly any pattern you can come up with or just give me a size and I'll have some ready.

Just say when and where to send them :hook

I agree, I think it makes a nicer afghan with many different squares. Thats what they did for Jordan's comfortghan. Everybody made the same size square but in different patterns.

Well I talked with Makenzie (17 year old daughter) Last night and mentioned that there were some gals that wanted to make a comfortghan for her family. She was really touched. She will talk it over with her Dad and let me know that it's alright. I sent her somelinks to different squares. (There are so many pretty ones!) I told her that if she didn't have any specific ones she wanted it made out of then we could make it a surprise.
So I'll let you know what she says.
So far I know that her Mom's favorite color was Yellow and her's is Forest Green.

Hello Amber,

I think it's great that you want to help this family. I too, lost my mother to cancer when I was a young teenager. Let me tell you how much it would've meant to me if someone had done that for my family. I would love to help make a couple of squares. Just let me know the details when you're ready!

Ambersafghans
April 25, 2005, 12:55 PM
Alrighty! I just talked with Makenzie and for some reason she didn't get my email with the links. :think So we'll just make it a free for all. :) Lets do 12" squares.

Her Mother's favorite color was Yellow. Her's is Forest green. She also likes purple blue and orange. She did request no pink. I don't know if it has anything to do with cancer, or if she just doens't like it.

Worsted weight yarn I think. I don't know how well some yarns mix.

Here is the list of people that have responded saying they would love to make some squares. If you wish to be removed or added let me know.

I don't know if I want to set a number of squares. Why don't we make what we can and I'll let you know if we have a problem. That sound alright?

Oh one more thing. Would you guys mind having a picture taken of you and your squares before you send them and include them with the squares? If it's to much trouble don't bother. But I think it would be nice for her to see everyone that helped with the comfortghan.
I'll try to email everyone my address but if you need it before I get it to you don't hesitate to drop me an email.
Thank you all so much for your help! It means a lot to me and I know it means a lot to Makenzie. :flower She thought it was such a neat idea when I told her about it. This is such a special group. :ghug

Ok, I am going out to get yarn right away. Should we all stay with the same brand and check colors. I can get Red Heart Super Saver here , but I can't get any Caron yarn. Is that alright?

The photo idea is wonderful!! I can't wait to hear what you all are making. I haven't decided yet. But I will let you know when I do.

Red Heart Super Saver is fine. I"d say stick to that if possible. But if you needed to use another worsted weight it would be alright. I'm not sure what to say about the colors. :think I'll be using what I have around.

Anyone dealt with the colors before on something like this?

April 25, 2005, 02:48 PM
So are we going with all of these colors? Just any variation of them in 12" squares? What is our goal? Don't remember how big comfortghans usually are. This is so great of you to put together. I will get started this week. And I really like the picture idea.

You don't have to go only with those colors, but yes you can use them any way you like. Um, I'll have to think about the goal. What are you time frames everyone? Will you have to wait a little bit to do this or can you get to it right away?

I can start this at any time, I just have to find a 12" square that would work with this project. Any suggestions? Or should I just pick one I like? Do you think we should decide on some kind of theme to pull it all together?

Ambersafghans
April 25, 2005, 03:50 PM
Just pick one you like. :) There are links in this thread to a lot of great squares. some of my siblings just picked some to make. I don't know if we could have a common theme. some of the squares have some sort of theme. But a lot are just neat squares. Let me know when you find something you like!

Oh, my little brother Andrew (7, he made an afghan for Afghans for Afghans with a bit of help) is making the dream catcher. :yay I forget what Carrie and Danielle chose. I haven't yet. :P

Hey Everyone. I was just chatting with Vicki (Mythunderbird) And she thought maybe we could make lap afghan for each of the family members. There is the Dad, Makenzie, Her older sister (who is back home) And her son.(The sisters) He is five

So could everyone let me know how many squares they will be able to do?
we would need 48 squares total. No one is required to do a certain amount.
I'll find out the rest of the families favorite colors.

Ellebee, do you mean the number of squares of the colors? The colors sound fine. As far as then number whatever you can do will be greatly appreciated.

I am just about done with a yellow hearts pattern. Andrew is making great proggress on a green dream catcher. Danielle is almost done with whatever the square she is doing is called. :) And poor Carrie had to undo all that she had done when she realized she was doing the wrong stitch. But it's a good learning experience for her.

I saw the lace one. It's pretty.

for those of you who are going to do that and send a hard copy, you could probably take a picture, send the squares and then when the film is developed mail it seperatly. Say, each one does a row type square (not Rounds), and each one does their own choice, as long as it has, say, 35 chains on all 4 sides when complete (before boarder---boader being one that is a simple sc, with 3sc's in the corners). This way all the squares will piece together easily. Do them in multiples of, say, 6 different pink shades that would blend,
then piece together and final boarder done with a contrasting color. Maroon, Or even a real pretty shade of purple or yellow, whatever would look good with the shades of pink in the piece.:2c

Hey Amber,

I've been out of town for a few days and have not been able to keep up with this thread. I have quickly skimmed it and did not see if specific colors have been chosen??? I have not started making any squares but can start today if you still need them.

I see we are not sending them to McKenzie as planned. That is OK with me. If Amber still wants to assemble the squares, I'm sure we can find a charity to donate the afghan too. I can even help with postage if needed. :)

That means a lot to me. We are going with worsted weight and the colors were mainly yellow, forest green, purple, orange, blue and red. But it doesn't matter a whole lot now. If you wanted to use pink that would be fine. Any color that you have laying around would work really.
And if you added something for postage it would be an extra blessing.

Pretty squares Coralie :manyheart and the kitty makes a great model. Funny how the furbabies have to get on top of all our projects at least we know they like them :)

Well not sure which Comfortghans thread to post this under so here goes...

Here are 3 squares I have finished and will be sending to Amber.

Dream Catcher

Cat Tracks
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/myprojects1/Cattracks12.jpg

here is my :2c . If we do not find someone specific to give the afghan too by the time it is finished, I suggest we send it to Afghans for Afghans. Amber has donated to that charity before.
OR
Lets donate it to the Linus Project. They provide blankets to babies thru teens in foster care so they will have a blanket all their own.

Here is the link to the Linus Project national Website.
www.projectlinus.org

From there you can look up a chapter in your state. You can also find crochet patterns for making blankets. The sideways shell is on their pattern list. I have used that pattern several times.

This is the link to the chapter that I donate to here in TN.

Amber...I liked the Waldo's Puzzle square too :) Someone made a couple of them for Jordan's comfortghan and I liked it and printed the pattern and have just been waiting to find the right time to try it. It was really easier than it looks. ;)

I'm glad you liked them Amber :)

The purple fleck is made by Red Heart, I picked it and some Teal Fleck up on sale at Wal Mart a long time ago and just never did anything with them. I'm not even sure if they make it anymore, I can't even find it at the C & C site. Too bad cause I really like it.

I would love to help make some pink squares, I think that would be a great idea. What size would you like, and where would you like us to send them.

Thanks Tandi. I"ll be watching for them.

HI Kris and Yarnmistress. Thanks for the offer that's sweet. But did you read all of the updates in this thread? It's kindof a comfortghan gone bad. :) We won't be able to get it to the original person intended. So for those who had offered at first and are still sending squares I"ll be putting them together for a charity. So if you want to send squares you could. (12") But it's not for a specific cause. :) Let me know! I'll give you my addy if you want.

Coralie I got yours as well! They look beautiful. Did you use simply soft? They feel much softer than worsted weight. Thank you both! I can't wait to put them all together.

Thank-you for letting us know that you got the squares. I used Caron Wintuk but I think they are so soft because I washed them before I mailed them to you. I thought it would be best since Seneca and Scooch took a nap on them. :cat :cat
