Good morning everyone.
I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.

I have been looking all over the web for a couple of weeks and have yet to find *just* the right pattern for a couple of Christmas presents that I want to make so am asking if any of you have suggestions/ideas.

First, I want to make my son in law a scarf and maybe a hat. I can't seem to find a man's scarf pattern that appeals to me. I would like something that doesn't take too long, as the holiday will be here before we know it! Also, do men's scarves typically have fringe or not? Silly question, but I always put fringe on ladies scarves, have never made one for a man before & am not sure if fringe is appropriate.

The second pattern I have trying to find is a poncho or cape pattern for my DD who is expecting my first grandbaby. :cheer:cheer:cheer:c9..Her coat is just barely wrapping around her at this point and I thought a warm poncho would be a good thing for her to have. The problem is, all the ponchos I have seen are long in front and too short on the sides...hope I am explaining this ok, what I mean is that the sides barely come to the elbows & I would like one that is a little longer on the side. I would love to find a pattern with a hood...maybe what I need is a cape, not a poncho.:scrachin

Well, if any of you have any ideas, I would welcome them.
Thank you for reading this,
Katie

I made a lot of scarves for the men in my family using a pattern similar to this one, but done them quickly using a bulky yarn, large hook and dc's in the front loop only. They look very manly!

I would try here for a ladies poncho pattern http://patbythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/ She has the greatest poncho patterns for ladies and the directions are clear and easy.:hook

:cheerJust pick out your favourite stitch and make a long strip for the scarf.
I like to do a simple V stitch which can look quite masculline, in the right colours.

The same for the poncho.
I made one very quickly by making two rectangles which I joined into a poncho shape then added a scalloped edge to finish it off.
It took only a few days to make and looks great on the lady I made it for.

She is of a cuddly size so I did not want it to make her look bigger and it doesnt so I was thrilled.
It actually looks ok on me too and i am considerably smaller.

I do not have it here with me, so I will measure it and check the stitch I did it in and take a picture later today.

Hope this helps.
Have fun.

If you know how to make a Round Ripple, it can be turned into a lovely cape and you can make it as long as you like. It is easy to do. You start with 7 dc in the center ring and continue with the pattern and turning every row. I made one with Simply Soft and it is very warm.

I made my husband a scarf by crocheting long way instead of short way.
I made it in black and red (his college colors). I think it'd look neat if you used suede to make it, too. I didn't fringe it.

For the poncho, how about a cape instead:

This one is called a poncho but it looks like a cape to me. It pulls over the head like a poncho but has a slpit up the center, good for baby. Don't be thrown by the two tone look, you do it in one thread or the other:

A Runana is another thought. They're long in the back, split for arms, and have panels in the front to keep you warm. This one isn't the greatest but it'll give you an idea:

Another really good idea is a sweater wrap. They are sweaters that have long, almost scarf like, fronts to wrap around the shoulders and neck:

If you have the first issue of Crochet Today, this one is in it:

If you really want a poncho, here's one:

Another quick and easy scarf for a guy is using 2 strands of ww and an 'N' hook. Just chain however wide you want it and use either sc or dc and go as long as you'd like. I made one last night in sc and it only took me a couple hours. Good luck in your search!

Thank you all for the great suggestions...

I'm thinking I will use the scarf pattern on the Happy Yellow House website, only double crochet, I can't do single crochet for too long, it just seems to take forever to get anything done. Or, I might just look in my book of crochet stitches and find a stitch I like & go with it.

For the poncho, I am leaning towards the day-to-night poncho at the Lion Brand website, I looked at that one before, but thought it looked so odd, with the different halves being crocheted in two totally different yarns, I think I would like one all in homespun. I bought 6 skeins of homespun the other day so I have enough yarn.

Aggie May, I would really like to see a picture of the poncho you made for your friend, if possible. My DD is also "cuddly" size (& getting more and more cuddly by the day. LOL). If you have time to post a picture and or instructions, that would be great. I might make that one, rather than the Lion Brand one.

Thanks again for all who took time to post...You all are the greatest.
