I would love to crochet my brother an afghan for his birthday next October (trying to get my to-do list in order for next year), but I am having trouble finding the right pattern. He is a big hunter/fisher/woodsman and I would like to use the Bernat Camouflage yarn and probably either dark brown or black as an accent color. I thought about just doing a simple ripple, but I don't know if that is "manly" enough, KWIM? Any suggestions? Maybe a 12" square?
Also, he is a big guy and almost 6'4". How big do I make it? I don't want to go broke buying the yarn! :eek

I don't know if this will work with your colors, but this is a great "manly" afghan and there is a CAL here that is working on them. http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42711
Since I don't usually make afghans, I wouldn't know how big or long to make it.

at www.crochetgarden.com there are a few patterns that would be good for a man. The afghan of the sandman is very easy but looks like it would be hard.

I am currently making my cousin (who is 6'8") an afghan from a pattern on crochet pattern central. It is under afghans and called My Favorite Afghan. I'm using a variegated green, yellow, blue color and it is turning out very nice. It looks like it would take forever but in four days of working on it in the evening I am already on the last of the third skein. I bought 14 5oz skeins and I figure it will be about 7 foot long. I know that a lot of men don't like the large "holes" as they call them in an afghan and this one keeps the "holes" to a minimum.

I made this same afghan last year using a solid color. Perfect afghan for a man. Also, I made a camo ripple ghan for my hubby a couple years ago. He loves it and proudly shows it to anyone he can. What ever you make, your cousin will love it. (the ripple pattern I used is called Dylan's Camoflauge Ripple Afghan)
