Why don't you try making one of the hotpads?
Once you get the hang of it, you could move on to something else.

It looks like the spike stitch. Here is a link to a site that should help.:hook

I have made this potholder. It is based on the pattern "Jacobs Ladder" or "Chain 8". I have also made a circular "star" pillow using this stitch.
Here are some patterns using this method.

I don't believe that it is a "stitch" per se. As IWANTSMORE mentioned, it is based on a chain loop. At certain points along your row, you crochet a specified number of chains, then complete your row. On succeeding rows, you make the chains again (at the same spot to make a straight cord, or to the left or right to make an angled cord). Then, when you are done, you finger crochet the chain loops together (pull one through the next) to get the effect you see, then secure the last one by crocheting over it.

I agree with mudpie. Each ch 8 is considered a loop. It really won't look like much until the last rnd. I think rnd 6 has a mistake in the beginning, though. I think the beginning should read- Ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, etc. There should be 6 dc in between your loops in the last rnd. When you pull each loop through the other you'll be able to tell if they're correct because you'll have white, CC, white, CC and you'll be sc'ing in the top of the last loop with white. It will give a nice texture as well as pulling the dc parts together. It is very clever.

my thoughts on this....... I would use this afghan pattern for the stitches/loops ... I think it would be easier to keep track of your loops.

I am making an afghan with granny squares that have the loops on each corner, mine are a chain 10 though, and not chain 8. When it is completed there are three loops on each corner that you pull through each other, if that makes sense, then you crochet your border around the square to hold the last loop in place.
At one time I had a pattern for this, and had made a few squares in other colors, but somehow managed to lose the pattern, so I took apart one of the previous sqaures, and am kind of winging it to make this afghan.
On the hot pad I can see what looks like the loops I am talking about on outside rounds, but I am not sure if that is what your are talking about. In my pattern I don't believe the pattern referred to the loops as any kind of stitch, I think it was more like chain so many, then join at the bottom of the chain to form a loop.
I would try and put a picture of my afghan, as much of it is done so far, but it says I am not allow to post attachments, so I don't know if that means I can't post pictures, or what. Maybe someone could clarify that for me.
I know one thing this afghan is very yarn intensive and takes a lot of time, so this is one project I am keeping for myself when it is done!:eek I have to take a break from working on it every now and then, or I go crazy.

That is the pattern I am making with a little modification since I had lost the original. Thank you for posting the pattern, now I can put it in my notebook of patterns that I print off the net.:hook

Thank you everyone:hug! This was driving me BATS! I was looking all over the place for a stitch name...it wasn't the "loop stitch"or the "braid stitch"or anything else I could imagine......so basically it is a technique. You see, I just LOVE that afghan that crochetingfool made, but unfortunately the pattern for it is in a magazine that I can not get over here. So, with the help of all these various patterns and advice, I will try to work it out on my own! Actually, I imagine this will be fun to learn! Thanks:hug a lot for your help again and have a great day!
