View Full Version : Fluffy Pink Shrug Schematics

Any Size/Any Gauge Shrug
Honestly, this is not something you want or need a pattern to do. If you know how to crochet back and forth and know how to crochet in the round, you can do this shrug. I think a pattern only serves to confuse, and removes the ability to conform this shrug to your choice of size, yarn and gauge. If you follow the schematics, you can make this for a 2 year old or for a size XXXL! And you can use any stitches you like - heavy dense ones or lacy light ones. You can use any yarn you want - baby weight or bulky weight. You can even choose whatever needle/hook size you want - a heavy yarn with smaller needle/hook will make a heavy shrug, a light yarn with larger needle/hook will make a lacy one. Obviously you can knit OR crochet this.
It's actually really easy - the hardest part is probably choosing what type of ruffle to do for the collar portion.
If you want to try it but are nervous, make a doll sized one! That'll give you a chance to see how it all comes together and it won't take much time or yarn.
First - make a gauge using whatever stitch you prefer for the body of your shrug. Measure your stitches per inch. Write this down somewhere! Gauge (G) = ____.
Now, you must get a sweater you like or one the person who plans to wear the shrug likes, one whose fit you wish to duplicate in your shrug. Spread out your sweater and measure thusly:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/shrugmeasurement.gif
From wrist to wrist: L (for length of rectangle)
Across the chest: C for chest
Alllll the way around the widest part of the arm: A
The "body" of the shrug is nothing but a rectangle. This is not tricky.
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/shrug2.gif
To figure your initial chain or cast on, multiply G x A = _______. (This is the number of stitches. Remember to add on any starting chain necessary for the stitch of your choice if you're crocheting... sc requires 1 chain, hdc requires 2, etc.)You begin at the short end (A) and work until it is (L) long enough, using the stitch of your choice. End off, work in ends.
Fold your rectangle in half, long-edge to long-edge. x to x and y to y. But you already knew that.
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/shrug3.gif
You will be sewing two seams, one from each end toward the middle, but you will leave some of the middle open. The number of inches you leave open in the center is
determined by C - your chest measurement.
Now, you will do some more math. This is NOT tricky. L" - C" = _____ divided by 2 = ______ the number of inches to sew up each arm.
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/shrug4.gif
Take a yarn needle and some yarn, and neatly sew the two seams. Turn the shrug to look at you, open up the center opening and you will now have this:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/scribble.gif
If you wanted a plain shrug, you could stop here, slip your arms into each of those long tubes and have a shrug.
Or, you can put the ruffly bit on.
From now on, you are working in the round. With a hook one size larger, sc in each stitch all the way around the opening. If knitting, you'll need a circular needle and you'll pick up evenly all the way around.
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/shrug5.gif
Now, begin your chosen ruffle stitch, working even for several inches, then increasing as you go to make the ruffle fan out slightly. That's it! Try it on as you go and stop making the ruffle when it is as long as you like. If you wish to make ruffled cuffs, simply chain around (or pick up and knit) the wrists and make a similar ruffle for as long as desired.
Variations: You needn't make one which goes from wrist-to-wrist. You can measure from elbow-to-elbow, or even upperarm-to-upperarm. Just remember to always leave stitches to measure C open in the center.
For a snug fitting shrug, measure a snug fitting sweater. For a loose shrug, measure a loose fitting sweater.
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/shrugfront.jpghttp://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/shrugback.jpg
I used the "sweater stitch" for the body of mine, which is much lighter weight than normal sc.
Chain any even number of chains.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (you must have an odd number of scs at this point)
Row 2: Sc in FLO of first stitch, * sc in BLO of next stitch, sc in FLO of next stitch* across. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 - ?: Repeat row 2. (You will notice that you're always putting a sc in the opposite loop from the one below, which makes a bit of a seed stitch pattern.)
(This pattern repeat can be worked over any odd number, plus ONE for the starting chain.)
For the ruffle, I single crocheted around the body opening, making sure my sc were an amount divisible by three. My ruffle pattern is *2dc, ch 1, 2dc (shell made), ch 1 skip 2 scs* across. On subsequent rounds, slip stitch into the center of the shell, do a ch 3 for initial dc, then dc, ch 1, 2dc, ch 1. In next shell, make shell (2dc, ch1, 2dc) ch 1.
I repeated this for five rounds, then put two chains between the shells for five rounds. Then put three chains between the shells for five rounds. Then, I changed the shells to *3dc, ch1, 3dc - ch 3* for several rounds, until I had to move up to *4dc, ch 1, 4dc* shells with an increasing number of chains between rounds - ending with (I believe) 4dc, ch 1, 4dc, ch 6. In the final round I simply sc in each stitch around.
The tie is simply a short length of chain, which my daughter threaded through an opening on each side of the ruffle - in a place where she wanted. You can also cross the ruffle over your torso and pin it.

You're welcome. I "fudged" it the whole time, so it's something very easy to just make up as you go along. It only looks tricky, which is my favorite kind of thing. Recipes, too! I like the foods which taste difficult to make but were actually quite easy. :)

Well, I can't say I have really fudged on anything. I am more the follow a pattern person, just because I still don't have the experience that alot of you all have. I do pride myself that I can follow pretty much any pattern out there, but I really wish I had the imagination to go off on my own with something. That being said.... I have printed this out, and when I can get the yarn I need for it and the time... I AM going to try this one. Any suggestions on what type of yarn would be best?
Wish me luck!

Lauri, this is GREAT. I love this kind of "pattern" that lets you get the basic idea and then adjust it for size and get creative with it! I've never seen any books do petterns this way, but it's such a great idea. It's kind of like "choose your own adventure" books, but with a crochet pattern! Thank you so much for sharing it!

One more question - how much and what kind of yarn did you use for your pattern? I'd like to know, so I can have an idea of how much I'll need for this project. If this has been asked and answered already, just smack me upside the head! I didn't see it. :blush

I used Bernat Baby Softee in pink http://store.knitting-warehouse.com/yarn-bernat-baby-yarn.html and it took almost all of three skeins. I was surprised, actually, that it took quite so much for a womens size small. (US 6/8) I used a G hook for the body and an H hook for the ruffle. I believe my gauge was about 3 spi. I think any sport or dk weight yarn would be best, but I don't really like bulky clothing.

I'm going to try a knit version in Lion Brand Homespun, I found a color called Metropolis and I think it'll look awesome knit on big needles. I just need to get a longer pair of #13 circulars. The color is black and white twisted together, looks like.
I hope to get to it as soon as I finish the other afghan I need to do this week.

Add my thanks to the many so far for the time you took to explain and demonstrate your technique. A pattern may not be necessary, but I think more of us need at least some guidance than don't, and you've provided us with a terrific map. And great job, it goes without saying on the shrug itself!

I had found this guide somewhere awhile back and tried it but mine turned out awful! Unfortunately I had used this mohair type yarn that is near impossible to frog so its been tossed to do ???? with. I really love this pattern though so maybe I'll give it another try in another yarn that is easier to work with. If anyone comes up with something more exact...like how to do the ruffle, etc. I'd love to hear about it. I've only been crocheting since Oct 04 so I need all the help I can get!! :D

July 18, 2005, 03:02 PM
Now I'm worried. I've just gotten to the point where I'm ready to stitch the sleeves up on my shrug and so I can begin the ruffles. Is the ruffle hard?? I'm using TLC baby sport weight yarn. It is soft, but the yarn splits open easily with my hook. I wouldn't use that yarn again.
Has anyone else made an ADULT sized one just like the one in the picture? Long sleeved--with ruffles.....I'd like to see it if you have! All I've seen is ones for teens or toddlers/babies or adult ones with only 3/4 length sleeves. I'm curious as to how they look on adults.
Thanks!

Found this from the About.com Crochet forum (http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&tsn=1&tid=18561&webtag=ab-crochet - There are photos here of two shrugs that were made by the poster for her daughters) This is beautiful and I really want to try it. I just have a couple of questions. I'm not terribly new to crochet, but I have never seen the terms "FLO" or "BLO"... Could you maybe explain what that means? Here is the section I am referring to:
"Row 2: Sc in FLO of first stitch, * sc in BLO of next stitch, sc in FLO of next stitch* across. Ch 1, turn."
Also, how did you to the wrist ruffles? I'm terrible at increasing properly...
Thanks!

I know you weren't asking me, but I saw your post and figured you'd rather have an answer ASAP. FLO is front loop only and BLO is back loop only. So you would do whatever stitch it is that you're doing in either FLO or BLO, which can have different effects, depending on how you do it. It could have a nice ribbing effect. I think in the one here, she alternated FLO and BLO. As far as the ruffles, were you talking about the ruffles on the ones that Chelle did for her little girls, or the ones on this post?

Thank you! I've never seen is shortened like that in my patterns; usually it just told me in long hand. It makes sense tho :) For the ruffle, I meant the one in this post, tho Chelle's option is very cute for a little girl's version. I always have trouble with increasing on my own without help from a pattern, cuz usually my stuff ends up bumpy instead of a smooth transition... lol.

Hi Jen,
The wrist ruffle was just the regular ruffle with no subsequent increases: "For the ruffle, I single crocheted around the body opening, making sure my sc were an amount divisible by three. My ruffle pattern is *2dc, ch 1, 2dc (shell made), ch 1 skip 2 scs* across. On subsequent rounds, slip stitch into the center of the shell, do a ch 3 for initial dc, then dc, ch 1, 2dc, ch 1. Hi all:
I finished my shrug at the end of June but just managed to take pics recently. Here's the front view:
http://photos21.flickr.com/29762756_fec3eaac1f.jpg
and the back:
http://photos22.flickr.com/29762891_3696fc95fd.jpg
(it's my first time linking to Flickr photos, so I hope this works) :blush
The lace on the back is just fantastic. I've received so many comments from people who now look at shrugs in a whole new light.
I used acrylic to make it and it's been too hot to wear it this summer. You can be sure I'll be wearing it often in the Fall.
Thanks for a fantastic pattern. :c9
Cheryl.

I've searched high and low for a pattern...now I can make one for myself (and all of my neices, since I have two boys and of course they wouldn't be interested in this!) I'm using Red Heart TLC Essentials in Persimmon...will post a photobucket photo when I'm done (the hardest part is actually working on the rectangle)...Thanks for sharing your wonderful pattern with the rest of us!

I'm embarrassed to ask for help with the math but please bear with me.
I really want to do this.
I took the measurements i needed.
around the arm 11 inches
from wrist to wrist to 42 inches
gauge (k hook ww yarn) 3 stitches per inch
so if my brains working....
i need to do a chain of 34, ( 11X3 plus one to turn) which will give me 33 single crochet
which is the odd number i need to do the sweater stitch.
i continue this for the 42 inches (the wrist to wrist measurement)....YES???????
I think if i know that i've got it right this far then i can take it
from there....
i SO appreciate :manyheart your advice and setting me straight if needed.

Hi! I have made a shrug almost like the one you have described. I am making another on your pattern. My question is about the tie. Does the shrug become close enough to tie after adding the ruffle? I can't quite see that much detail from the photo.

You just keep increasing the ruffle until it IS close enough to tie - more rows of ruffle mean it'll cover more of your front. My daughter overlaps the front of hers and pins it over the tummy area most times - like Oprah's "bus" sweater.
I hope you'll post a pic when you're done! :)

you can certainly make this. i did, and i've only been crocheting for about 2 months. i've not put the ruffle on because i've not learned any decorative ruffly stitches. gonna have to do that someday. but i've been wearing it plain and i love it. :c9

I'm in love with this pattern =) I've been meaning to give it a whirl for ages (ok since the day this post was created lol) But I've been busy and distractable so I never got round to it till this week.
Thank you so much for your awesome schematics =) I didn't even have any trouble with the math (and that's saying something for me rofl)
Here is the shrug I made:
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/1000/finishedyellowshrug5mx.jpg
I *think* it's about a size 7/8 girls, but I haven't got a little girl handy to try it on lol. The recipient is in the states so I'm just hoping it'll fit her lol.
I used Caron Simply Soft in Yellow, made the majority of it using extended sc, then about 6 inches on each sleeve is done in shell stitch and I used the ruffle you described in the schematics since I'd already used shells in the sleeves. Then I just whipped up a flower and attached it to a pin so it can be used as a closure, or it can be worn on a hat (when I get that finished it will be done in the shell stitch like the sleeves)
Now I can't wait to make one for me.... though I dunno how good it'll look on my new fat/flabby self lol. I still want one ;)

I happened across this thread while doing a mad search for a simple crocheted shrug pattern. I've finally found it!! Thank you!! I intend to make this without the ruffle and can't wait... well, in fact I didn't wait-- I started it out with some Caron Bliss yarn, and it ended up being bulkier than I'd like. Plus, after about 12 rows, I realized that I was supposed to have done an odd number of stitches in the row instead of even, and thus wasn't doing the "sweater stitch" pattern. Blast! But that's okay, I'll be picking up more yarn tomorrow. :lol
I do have one question-- how did you (or anyone else who's completed on) stitch up the two arm sides? Did you just sew them shut with a darning needle or did you slip stitch, then turn the whole shrug inside out? I'm wondering which would look better.

Okay, ignore my previous post, I just went ahead and did it. lol
I'm posting photos of my finished shrug! Don't mind that my head is cut off in the pics because I'm posting what I'm wearing on my head in another thread at some point.
http://www.tashamoss.com/crochet/shrugfront.jpg
http://www.tashamoss.com/crochet/shrugback.jpg
I used a boucle yarn, I love it! The only thing I'd like is for it to be longer in the back. I don't exactly know how I'd acomplish that though.. I feel like if I just added more rows to the part that's not attached at the arms that it'll just be sort of a flap on the back instead of an integrated part. Seems like a lot of people who have posted theirs have a much longer back part... not sure exactly how that would work!

November 10, 2005, 12:19 AM
I got my guage which is 3 sts to an inch and my arm measurement is 11 so that would give me 33 plus the one for turning means 34, so my question is do I chain 34stiches or do I add more as this seems too small to me.
xmaystarx
November 10, 2005, 01:16 AM
That's right. I just finished one tonight, just have to add some trim. It seems small but it will come out as the post above you and then you can add length to it with the ruffle which will make the rest of the body as well as the collar.

Has anyone used any different stitch patterns for the body portion on this pattern? I'm starting one tonite to wear at a marriage retreat early next month and I'm using the diagonal box stitch for the body. I'll probably stick with the shells for the ruffle though. I'm really hoping to add some extra touches on the sleeves, we'll see how that turns out. I'll post pictures when it's done.

That's a great idea. I was wearing my blue one (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15176) in Costco and my dd noticed a cami in the same color blue, so that was a happy accident. okay I have a question, when u make this shrug well mines is going to be a pullover shrug and I figured out for the part that is going to go over my head I will make a chain as if I am making a button hole except this will be for a big button(my head). Well what I wanted to know is when u start making the shrug, do u stitch the length of the rectangle which would be the measurement from wrist to wrist or do u stitch from the width of the rectangle?

Begin by chaining an amount for your width, and work until you reach your required length as the graphic above shows.

Question: Could the rectangle be made in the other direction? Meaning instead of from cuff to cuff, from top to bottom or vice versa? Would the end result work out fine still?
Just wondering because some patterns wouldn't look so hot done sideways and this piques my interest. :)

This DOES look pretty easy, but I have to ask this.
Would it still look okay (or would I look like an absolute freak? :think) if I were to make something like this, but have it extended a bit longer than what's shown?
This may be a little TMI, but let me explain anyway. Ever since having children, I can NOT stand to have anything on top that's shorter than my stomach. It's disgusting, and *I* don't want to look at it, let alone OTHER people! But I absolutely LOVE the way these types of tops look (I've tried on several but put them back because the tummy was always showing). I know I'd need to wear another top under it but it seemed stupid (to me) to have a super-long top under a shrug like this if it's not going to at least SOMEWHAT match in length.
Am I making sense? Too much time with children has melted my brain cells. :P

You can wear it however you like. We often overlap the fronts and pin w/a decorative pin - that gives full coverage across the whole front.

The back would always have to be done in rows, and the stitch I chose to use (sc in bl, sc in fl) doesn't look the same when done in rounds as it does in rows. I preferred the rows look and don't mind the sewing. Of course, don't let that stop you from doing it in the round if YOU want to. :yes I'd love to see a picture when you're done with yours! :yay

My last post was rather early in the AM for me and it just now dawned on me that you can do the stitch you are doing in the round and have it look like it would if you were doing it in rows. When you get to the end of your round, join with a slst and then you do the number of chains (ie 2ch for a hd), turn and continue your stitch instead of continuing your "round" turn and pretend you are doing rows but just join with a slst. When you get to the back opening you just switch to rows until your reach your back width and then close up and return to rounds.
I am always looking for ways to skip hand sewing my crochet times so that there is no way of a seam coming a part especially on a sleeve.

Yes, I've done that, and I've made several of these trying different styles, EDITED I don't like *this* particular stitch, when the rectangle is done in the round, it makes a bulkier join than seaming. When done flat, the edges of the rectangle are nice and neat and easy to sew up and easy to pick up for doing the collar/lace. Just my preference on this shrug - silly, perhaps? I do all my knitting in the round, usually, and much of my crochet. :) It's really not a complicated little thing - and I definitely didn't invent it - so we all can feel free to do it however we like. :)

Ok when you say the edging I am assuming you mean the collar? You still do that in the round. I am just referring to the initial "tube" for the sleeves.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the list but just wanted to post quickly to thank Mrs Who for her wonderful & generous shrug schematics. I've tried it in chunky yarn but with sort of an open/filet stitch and ended up with a very warm and snuggly shrug that's just perfect for freezing airplanes & cinemas... so thank you, thank you... pics will come when i get some kind of camera.
I received the IKEA 2007 catalogue, not sure if we get the same one all over the world, this one says 'Sort out your life' or something. On page 227, there is the most pretty lil shrug/cardy just hanging in the wardrobe. It's like the shrugs posted in this thread but slightly longer in the back, and looks like the shawl collar or ruffly bit is not too wide. Any idea how I can modify the shrug guidelines to make it??? I'm dreaming & drooling over it like i've never done any IKEA catalogue.. heh. Thanks

This pattern is so simple, I'm so glad I searched...THANK YOU! I've been dreaming of a white shrug since I fell in love with one at an outlet mall..don't remember the store, but at $100 it had to remain in my dreams..
Here's my question..if you worked decreases on one side and increases on the other of the rectangle, would you end up with form-fitting sleeves (I was never one for gaps at my wrist:blush)? Or would it be simpler to just make a narrower rectangle then tack on back panels to make it more substantial? Any thoughts?

Hi all, I know this is a very old post, but I am new here and I would love to try this pattern. But, the pictures do not show up in the first post. All I get are those darn red x's. Wondering if someone could repost the pics?? Thank you so much!

Hey robinleigh, I don't think we are going to have much luck with this. I just looked and the person who started this thread hasn't post since june. Maybe she is no longer a member.
Pauline, Thank you, but we were looking for the pics from the original post that "diagram" how to actually make/measure for this shrug.

I'm not sure if this will help but I emailed mrs who and asked if she would mind reposting the diagrams.
I wonder if anyone who saw the original ones could at least tell us what the diagrams looked like?

Hi ,
I am so happy to find this pattern, i have been searching for a crocheted shrug pattern, found so many knit ones but wanted crochet pattern.
what does this mean? "Alllll the way around the widest part of the arm: A"
I want tomake a shrug from elbow to elbow, sorry for such a stupid doubt but i am confused ( i am awake from 2 am midnight:( )
Is it the upperarms circular measurement? the sleeves opening measurement?
Can you please help!
thanks,
Nila

I have the origonal pictures and the pattern. The arm measurments are the upper arm measurments where you arm is the fatest. The shrug should look like a big cylendar when you sew it together with a open area where you insert your arms. You crochet around that circular opening to make the ruffely part. I don't have a scanner and I am not computer saavy otherwise I would show you. I am making my second one, they look different depending on what you do with them. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r53/snapdragon928/Imag0043.jpg
Here is my first. It's m uch different than others, I made the sleeves seperate and angel sleeves and didn't put the ruffle part around the neck.

Does anyone have the original pictures that were in the first post? I am a visual learner as well and need step by step directions on how to do this and I would LOVE to make this but I can't visually see it.
Does anyone else have step by step pictures??:think
