Hi everyone! I'm crocheting my grandchildren an afghan. I have almost finished four of them and still have two to do. But, I'm undecided what colors to use. These boys are very young , 4 and 2, and don't have a favorite color yet. Do any of you have any suggestions on colors that they will not outgrow? For example, if I do Spiderman colors, they may tire of that when they get older. I'm interested in colors that will work for any age. Obviously, I don't have any experience with boys. :yes If you have any ideas, please feel free to post them. Thanks for your time.

I wonder if bold, primary colors might be your way to go...

blues or greens - tan would go with either of these colors too.

I just finished a blanket for my 3YO son using bright primary colors and he loves it. You can see a picture of it HERE (http://www.flickr.com/photos/21259167@N04/2156607819/). Whatever you make for them, they are going to love it!

Bright colors are good. Primaries are good. Rich, not pastel, colors are good. My friend's son (now 23) loved the ripple she made him in "crayon colors" to pieces. Spiderman colors probably wouldn't be outgrown, but a RR "spideyghan" might. Although, several have been made for peoples' boyfriends and husbands....

There are also some yarns out called camouflage. its a varigate that I think would be fun to play with and not outgrown by a boy ( my four year old calls it magic yarn because of the color change)
here is a link to bernats camo yarns:

The idea of primary colors is an excellent one !!

My boys aren't picky at all (I have three). As long as you stay away from pinks.

Blue is always a good choice in my opinion, and you could throw some white in it too... or beige/tan color.

Sara - your afghan was beautiful! I want to go back & look at it again.

Browns and light blue seem to be a popular color combo. Throw in a little bit of orange for a splash of color. If you look at the shirts in the boys department (like the striped polo type shirts), you might find some inspiration.

One of my favorite combos for my boys is navy and bright yellow.

I made some hangar covers for Christmas gifts and my 9 yo son asked for one in the black/white/grey variagated yarn.

My boys would balk at anything remotely pink and purple is pushing it.

What colors are their rooms? Maybe you could use those colors.
The four year old might have a favorite, or favorite of the moment. My daughter is all about pink. lol

If it's not a surprise, ask the mom(s). Especially if you are thinking about the camo. I know lots of the members here like/love it. However not everyone does.

I agree with Blue and white or camo. I think most boys/men love camo although I am sure not all. Good idea to ask the mother!!

why not take them to the store to look at yarn and pick out their own colors? I think that would make their afghans extra special.

I like this idea. It makes it special for each child. They may pick out all primaries, or other color schemes and whatever they pick will be fine.

You could bring home several colors and let them choose if that makes things easier.

I think it's a great idea.

To answer your questions, their room colors change quiet often so if it matches today that doesn't mean it will later. I asked their Mom and she is the one that came up with Spiderman colors. I can't ask the boys because none of my grandchildren know that I'm doing this for them. It's a surprise. I had thought about using a variegate color with a solid that matched. I thought this might look good but it's just an idea. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and if you have more, please feel free to say so!

Okay...this is my first time even posting pic of any work I've done. Gotta figure out the irfanview program to just add the pic. But anyway, here's a link to some pics I took of an afghan I created for my grandson. It's a pattern from a book I had purchased "Hooked Throws" and he looked through the pages and asked me to do this for him. I found it easier to take him with me to shop for the yarn in the choices he liked. I think that's the best way since they feel they had a part in the creation of the afghan and will cherish it even more.

Sorry about the other pics but it's a throw i created for DH who had been asking for a skull and crossbones throw for ages. Found a link of a skull/crossbone graph online and just followed that.
