Step into the Way-back Machine and remember those old pull over vests made with one large granny square for the front and one for the back. I'm looking for a pattern for one for an adult. All I seem to find are patterns using many small squares. Or dead links! Anyone seen one lately?

Yes, i remember those well:lol The one my mom made me was burgundy, navy, and tan, actually the square was a large flower, not a simple granny:garden

The vests were pretty simple...seems like you could wing it and come up with the same thing. make a square the size you want for the front and back, either join those at the side seams or put a panel of plain crochet in at the sides, make straps about 2" wide over the shoulders, put a row of ribbing at the bottom.....that is what the ones I remember looked like anyhow.

The book Crochet in no Time by Melody Griffiths has a pattern for a long-sleeved pullover that is a big granny square in the front and the back. I think it is a turtleneck. It is very cute....more loose-fitting than the little vests i recall from the 70s which were cropped and form-fitting.

I made one of those in red white and blue and I still have the pattern. I remember ordering it from one of those ads in the newspaper and the qualityof the pattern isn't very good, it is on memograph paper (yes I am old)
I would be willing to send it to you, but it is children sized, but I'm sure you could figure out how to make it bigger. Since I am very new here, I don't know the "correct" way for us to exchange information and I want to be sure that giving you my pattern doesn't violate any rules.

Hi Nancy, welcome to Crochetville! My understanding of the guidelines here is that it is OK if you want to give or sell a pattern sheet to someone. I believe lending it would be OK also. It would be against the guidelines to make a copy of a purchased pattern and give the copy to someone--that would infringe the copyright.

Martha's Stargazer Site for Women (http://marthac.info/women.html)has the one I think you want. 1970's Granny Square Shrink Top I think (can't post the link, it's an archived site). There's no picture, but there was at one time and I believe that's what you want... maybe.

Thanks! I'm not sure about that one but another on that page is what I want. The Hippie Dippie Vest! Um, we had those hats, too.
