View Full Version : Large, and I do mean large, pineapple doily! *Updated: pics of moms surprise*

I really cut it close this Mother's day gift wise! I started this pineapple doily (http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/LargePine.html) about three weeks ago and just finished it today. The pattern suggests size 30 thread, but I decided to use size 10 instead. The results were a 29 inch doily instead of an 18 inch doily! :eek
I'm very proud, as this is the largest thread project I've ever attempted. Hope my mom likes it!
More about my trials with this monster in my blog (http://hook-me-up.diaryland.com/050508_57.html).

My mom completely fell in love with her doily, I'm so happy! She'd probably kill me if she knew I was posting pictures with her in "work clothes", but I had to show everyone the look of shock on her face (as well as my dads!)

A friend of mine went the other way and did it in size 100 thread. It was stunning. I love this pattern regardless of what thread it's done in. Do it in a size 5 or 8 and you've got a table topper!

Sunshine, when you get started on this doily, don't let what I wrote in my blog discourage you lol. It really is a (mostly) easy pattern, just very tedious. The end results are definitely worth it though!

It is really beautiful Christine! I recently have wanted to start doing doilies, bookmarks, snowflakes, etc. I have so many other things going on right now though. I also am doing a granny square afghan in size 10 cotton thread.
:think
At first, I was just going to do a square to see how the thread would look. Then I got the bright idea to do an afghan. I am starting my 3rd ball of cotton and it only measures 24" x 22". Of course I started it when I couldn't read patterns and only knew how to do a granny square.
But now I see all the wonderful things you can make with it, and I can't wait to get some patterns.
Thanks for being one of the people that inspire me!

Wow ~~ I love your pineapple doily~~~~ I espically loved the border you used !! I love how it fans out to almost flower like. Wonderful~~ I also love how you put it in like a book look. Interesting idea you have here. I do make top and bottom board to keep the doily flat for gift giving,,,but i cover them in wrapping paper.. It looks like you used fabric.
Your mom is very excited to see her doily !
