View Full Version : On the Hunt for a Bag

Hi!
So, my daughter's been having a tough time with "remembering" in school. At 12 years old and 6th grade, they're expected to remember an obscene amount of stuff, and they are remarkably unsympathetic to those who forget things, like my daughter :angry Had to send a scolding letter to a couple of her teachers today.
Anyway!! I'm doing my darnedest to try to help her in her remembering; I have bought her a journal and sat down last night to separate each page into her classes, and she's supposed to write assignments in each section every day, "even if there aren't any, write THAT in!" :) So the actual REASON i'm actually posting this here, is because I have offered to make her a "purse" with a long strap that she can carry her journal and a pen/pencil in (and chapstick or whatever small things she might want with her). She was delighted and was hoping it would be done today (I offered yesterday, heh!). I've been on the hunt since I offered for a smallish tote or purse with a long strap, perhaps a flap top but NOT necessary, that I could make for her. I've been hunting through crochet poets and CPC, but it's been a loooong process, and I was wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction? Easy and/or fast would be nice, though they are not requirements ;)
Thanks in advance for your help, and I'm sorry for rambling on like that! :eek

Don't know any patterns off hand, but why don't you just make your own? Pick your favorite stitch, work up a long rectangle, fold the bottom up, (leave some at the top for flap) sew up the sides, add a strap...this way you can customize it to the exact size of the journal. ************ has some pretty stitches...

This might work for you:

Or this one:

This one doesn't have a flap but it'd be easy to add one:

This is cute with a long strap:

Another with a long strap and a flap, it's felted:

You can make the straps as long as you want and add flaps if needed. Don't forget you can use her favorite colors, too.

Poor thing, she needs an assignment notebook! At our school, kids start using them in THIRD GRADE and it is an amazing tool to get them organized and it teaches them at an early age to write down your assignments and plan ahead.
I have always liked this pattern, even though it says it's a holder for a CD player:

Edited to add - link for a template to make your own in Microsoft Word, if you're so inclined. That way you can customize it for her class schedule.

Wow, there are some really cool patterns here, thank you very much! I'll show 'em all to her tonight and see which she'd like. And coolhockeymom, I found that book on EBay and I plan to pick it up when finances permit; thank you so much for pointing that out! :D

You guys are silly! :laughroll
I finally found a pattern for a bag, this one (http://donnalynn2.blogspot.com/2007/09/donna.html), but of course it's WAY too small! So I started the bag I made the same way that person did, on a larger level, and proceeded to COMPLETELY IGNORE the pattern and just kinda went and went and went until I was happy with it :D Even better, my Jennifer was delighted with the result! :yay
This is what it ended up looking like:

Darsa, I used to work with children who had similar problems...not uncommon. Try color coding ....red for math (red folder left side incoming assignments, right side outgoing) also a red notebook again for math, then green for another subject, blue for another and so on. It does help..best wishes..the bag came out great!!

It is cute!
I like the color coding idea too. That may help if she needs more help.
