I get really cold feet and calves during the winter...Painful for me to even walk sometimes. Right now, I am wearing thick pants, leg warmers, socks and slippers and my feet hurt so bad. (Poor circulation in my lower limbs)
I am looking for a pattern for really warm socks that I can wear along with my house slippers and over my socks... I want to wear them up to my knees.
Thanks in advance!

I do not have a sock pattern but have you tried wool yarn?

yes, the leg warmers and socks I am wearing right now are wool...but the pattern I used is not dense enough so cold air goes through....I guess I am looking for a pattern that when crocheted, makes a thick fabric.

The only pattern I have for socks is for knit ones and I don't think they are very thick
Good Luck with your search....have you tried CPC?

yes, I am trying one from there right now...I think I am going to line it with fleece when I am done....hopefully that will work :)

I have a very nice pattern that I've used for years, and it's very warm. It's a knit pattern however. I'm not sure what you would have to do to make it work for crochet...but I'll try to figure it out.
Blessed Be

My suggestion is this...to make a denser crocheted "fabric" is use the pattern you have, but use a smaller hook, and tighter tension, and if need be, and if you are using sock yarn (thin) double up (two strands in place of one.) You could also crochet 4 socks, and take two and put one inside the other. and stitch up. I live next door to a yarn shop and I was talking to the owner the other day and she was telling me about knitting special socks like this for a client who also has very cold feet and requested socks like this. I think this can be done with crocheted socks.
You might just have to experiment with different yarns, different sized hooks and tighten up your tension. I make and wear a lot of crocheted socks, they are my favorite and I get what you're saying about how the air goes through (which for me isn't always a bad thing, because my feet get hot usually.) My problem still with socks I make (including knitted ones) is that they kind of stretch out and then they get sloppy on my feet. The yarn shop owner and I talked about this and she was telling me about the hook (or needle for knitting) size and the tension and for me to measure carefully because if my socks are spinning around my foot and getting stretched out, they are either made too big or too small...
I make my socks with a sock pattern I found on Crochet Me (Socks in Shoes I think is the name) years ago and I make them with German sock yarn, and with an 0 or 00 (or size D) steel hook. And they do fit in my shoes.

Can you use something like this then just keep adding (along with some increases for the calf area) until you get them as long as you want? http://www.*********************/crochet/slisoc.html

Just a thought, I saw a sock yarn with elastic in the yarn which I thought would be lovely to keep them in place. If you wanted, you could either use it with a second strand of regular yarn, or just near the top to keep them in place.
I also like the idea of a sock in a sock, that you could line as well, and would be sooo cosy, right up your calf, and to your size!

There is a pattern for spike stitch socks on www.lionbrand.com ( crochet patterns) that is free and uses wool ease yarn. They should be pretty warm considering it's using a wool yarn. There is a pattern for cottage slipper socks as well that is very warm and thick but not good for wearing with shoes .

I love the elastic idea.. One issue I have with the legwarmers is after awhile the get loose....mmm looks like I am up for a trip to Acmoore tomorrow :devil
*I won't look at any other yarn* :angel lol
I don't mind it if doesn't fit into shoes. I only wear them in the house aanyway. Perphaps I could find a good foot sole that I can fit into the bottom so that the cold doesn't creep in from the floor. I have these great boots with lining in them that I wear outside the house. They are sooo warm...(we don't wear shoes in the house)...

How about felting? I have a felt jacket and it's warm as toast, no holes for the wind to get through. Zaraliz

You do need a wool, but not a superwash, I think those are designed to be washed and not shrink. If you go to AC Moore, ask them which works well...OH and check the area http://www.crochetville.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=36, there will be LOTS of info there!

I went to the store today (didn't succeed with not buying yarn that I didn't have project for) :) hey, it was president's day and there was a sale! I could get 100% wool yarn (they didn't have the color I wanted or they didn't have enough of the color I wanted) plus...it wasn't on sale :P Anyways, I did get some yarn for the cottage socks and I got a, I guess you would call it, a pair of foot foam pads that I am going work into the slippers...we will see how it turns out :) I will post pictures.
