I was googling granny squares and I found this one that my mother loved (as do I).
So I figured i'd make one to see how it would turn out.

It came out really well, then it hit me with an idea. I have decided to make a square to represent everyone in my mothers family and attach them all in the end as a big family-ghan. I've talked to most of them to find out what colors they feel represent them the best and that is almost all done.

My question is how should I mark each square with who it represents? I still want her to know who is who 10-15 years down the line. Any thoughts??

You could embroider the names or initials on the inner part of the square or (less acceptable) tag each of the squares with a small paper ID.

include a legend chart with it --- pink/black = person, and so on

I thought about the birthstone idea, but as I looked into when everyone was born, we have a LOT of May babies (5 or 6) and even more September babies (closer to 8 or 9). And the blanket only has 25 squares at this point, and that would be half of the squares being either green or blue.

I have what may be an odd idea. There is suppose to be a way to print on fabric softener sheets (either w/ the computer printer or I'm thinking more feasible to get transfer paper and print it on that and then iron onto the fabric softener sheet)and could cut and sew them on the back of each square (in order to leave the right side clear).

That sounds interesting. I might look into that. Thanks!

I love the ideas given here. Whatever you decide to do, it will make a very thoughtful afghan. Good luck and have fun making it!

i have to ditto the legend idea - then she could put it in a photo album/scrapbook and have it always - i would be afraid of messing up the gorgeous nature of the square by embroidering (sp?) on it - but thats just me (i dont embroider very well) LOL

hope you post a pic of the finished ghan

Cool idea !!! Thanks for sharing !!!

You could make-up a poem and print it on fancy paper and frame it.

I like the idea of embroidering the initials on the inner white part of the square. The photo transfer paper is a good idea, but I'm usure how well it would adhere (or remain adhered) to yarn.

This is such a great idea! Would you mind sharing the source of the pattern?

Thanks!

Very nice! I'd say embroider the names. If you don't want to break up the pattern you could do it on the "wrong side" of blanket.

What if you had each person hold thier square and you take a picture.. and then combine all the pics onto a CD.. or a DVD..
