Okay, call me crazy or over-ambitious or anything you want, BUT...

I would love it if someone had a pattern for crocheting a hibiscus flower. Not for a blanket, but for pinning to my shirt or wearing in my hair. We are having a Hawaiian themed VBS this year. The Hawaiian state flower is a yellow hibiscus and I thought it would be fun for the lead team to wear a yellow hibiscus in their hair or pinned to their shirts.

Maybe a crocheted hibiscus would be ugly, I don't know. If you talented ladies (or gents) have any other crafty ideas for creating a hibiscus, I'm open to those ideas, too! My mom suggested using crepe paper, but I'm wondering if that would be too delicate to withstand a week of VBS!!!

Have you tried crochet pattern central ( www.crochetpatterncentral.com (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com) )
They have quite a few flower patterns. You might be able to find one that works.

God Bless

Here's a daisy that 'sorta' looks like a hibiscus, maybe you could fiddle with it to make it look more hibiscus-y.

This is pretty but too much work if you were to make a bunch, plus I'd worry about the wires

I found a lot of flower patterns, but I think that looked the closest. Good luck!

Okay, for the link that granny square listed, I think if I make the petals a little rounder and figure out how to get the part that sticks out and gets powder all over you - to stick out further (I'm not good at naming flower parts, but is that called the stamen?) Anyhow, I think I can fudge it with those great starters. I also found some patterns off crochetpatterncentral.com that I am going to try to put the pic on here, but if I don't figure that out, I think I can combine all of them and get a great flower. However, I may be the only one wearing the flower!! We'll see!

Okay, I was going to post the pic, but I can't remember how to do it. I remember I had to go thru another site, but I've only done this once and that was before christmas. Amazing how short my memory has become! I am way too young to be this forgetful!

Hi, Photobucket is a site a lot of folks use, once you upload your photo you click on one of the links (e-mail, direct link, html, image) and paste it into your post.

For the stamen you could try making a few chains, join into a loop, and sc around and around for the length you want.

I knew I'd seen a book somewhere online with tropical flowers in it, and I was able to find it again, it is by Jenny King http://www.jennykingdesigns.com/books/covers/flowers.html You can see the hibiscus on the back cover but pic is pretty small. It is for sale at this Canadian site http://www.karpstyles.com/catalog.html?item=1214&catid=Jenny%20King that pic might be a little better. You can see the stamen but not much detail. The plumeria right below the hibiscus was adapted by someone here into a square for an afghan, very pretty.

There are also some books on crocheting leis that have hibiscus patterns in them, can be found on Amazon.

I think this is a cool idea, hope you are able to make it work:hook

My daughter had a Hawaiian wedding two years ago and I looked for flowers for a long time, I came up with the these, form Aunt B's. The link for the pictures is below.

Aunt B has a yahoo group with her patterns on it. You have to join. Then the flower pattern is under Mis.

One thing you could do is buy some yellow (or whatever color you prefer) wool as well as some green for leaves. Crochet a large rectangle of each color, & throw it in the washing machine with hot water and soap, to felt it. Buy a cheap fake hibiscus and take it apart to use as a pattern (or draw it from a picture if you can do that... I don't draw). Now, cut out the petals from your felted material, sew them together, put leaves on bottom, and sew a pinback on. Voila... instant hibiscus. The felted fabric will have more body and should hold up nicely. You can cut into felted fabric and it won't unravel.

You could also make fabric flowers (my husband and his family are from Hawaii and this is a craft that is used a lot for making flowers to pin in your hair)

There is a pattern there called "Bouquet of Lilies" that you maybe could play around with

I have never felted before, but I think that is something to thing about! I didn't know you could cut the piece after you felted it and it not come apart. Sherryzzz, I am definitely going to go check out the website you suggested! Thanks, Ladies!!

rcvanilla - the flowers that you did are gorgeous!! I do have a question for you. When you worked the stamen, is it done into the shape that they are in, or do they just sort of "create" their own "shape"?

I have to say it again - Those flowers are absolutely gorgeous!!!!

Magiccrochetfan - I really like the book by Jenny King that you recommended. I think I would like to get that even if I don't use it for the current project. I have a vase on my china hutch that I keep flowers from my garden in, but since I live in KY there are a few months that I have no flowers to put in it and it has been sitting there waiting for me to buy some seasonal flowers to keep in it while KY has nothing growing. It sits there so sad and empty and it would be so much fun to have little crocheted pieces of me to put in there when my little petaled friends are napping in the winter... Okay, so I'm not a writer and I'm not typically that cheesy!!! But today requires me to be fun and lighthearted!
