What I always do is take one of my shirts that fit like the item I want to make and measure it. Then once I decide on the pattern stitch I want to make I do a gauage swatch. Then just do the math on how many stiches you will need to get the size you need.

And once you've gotten the first 2 or 3 rows or rounds done it's stable enough to try it against you. If it's close to what you're planning, great. Remember, you'll have edging on it eventually too, so that adds a little to the size.
If it isn't close to what you are aiming for, now is the time to rip it out and start over. If it isn't correct now, it won't get better by adding more hours to it, then ripping it out. That just breaks your heart.

http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60730A.html?noImages= if you cannot follow this link, go to www.lionbrand.com and type in the word tunic in the search box. The pattern is free, and signing up is free, but you have to sign up to get the pattern. You can search the site without signing up, however. It is a basic tank top from what I can tell, just longer.
