Anyone wanna test this pattern? If you forgot what this is, here's a reminder:
http://www.inktobark.net/hair1.jpg
If feels kinda weird to call this an original pattern. It's so simple...it should be like copyright free or something. Anyhoo.... Please let me know if I screwed up or you have trouble understanding it. This is the first pattern I share.
I used:
Sugar and Cream Cotton yarn (any worsted weight will do; cotton's just better for summer)
I hook and G hook (for flower)
Stitches used: Chain (ch)
Single Crochet (sc)
Double crochet (dc)
Puffy McPuffpuff* or Bullion (B):
y/o 9 times, insert hook into stitch, draw loop through stitch. You know have ten loops on the hook. Y/o again and draw loops through the previous ten.
Shell:
3 dc ch 1 3 dc in one space.
Row 1: Ch 3. Dc 2 in third ch. Ch 1, skip second ch and 3 dc into first ch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3. 2 dc in next dc. Ch 1 and shell in ch1 space from previous row. Ch 1, 3 dc in last dc. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 3. 2 dc in next dc. *Ch 1, 3 dc into next ch 1 space, ch 1*. Shell in shell. Repeat from * to * once. 3 dc in last dc. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 3. 2 dc in next dc. *Ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 space,* Repeat from * to *. Shell in shell. Repeat from * to * twice. 3 dc in last dc. Turn
Row 5 – 15: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc. *Ch 1, 3 dc in spaces, ch 1* Repeat * to * until point. Shell in Shell. Repeat from * to * until last space. 3 dc in last dc. Turn.
[You can change how many rows you’d like as long as you keep to the pattern. Keep in mind that the edging adds about an inch and a half.]
Edging: Ch 3. 2 dc in next dc. *Ch 1, dc-b-dc in space, ch 1.* Repeat * to * until point. Shell in shell. Repeat rom * to * until last space. 3 dc in last dc. Turn.
Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc. Ch 1, shell in space, ch 1* Repeat * to * until point. Shell in shell. Repeat from * to * until last space. 3 dc in last dc. Do not turn. Instead, sc down long edge of kerchief, fasten off and weave in ends.
Straps: Join yarn in one corner and ch about 40 (or however long you’d like your straps to be). Sc in second chain from hook and continue across. Fasten off at corner and weave in end. Repeat on other side.
And yes, I call the bullion my Puffy McPuffpuff stitch. :devil
ETA: I reuploaded the picture. I didn't realize it was down, sorry. Enjoy.

This is so cute!
I printed it off and plan to start it tomorrow.
It looks like it'd be an awesomely beautiful shawl just by adding rows!
Thanks for sharing this!

About the shawl comment: My mom said she wanted me to make her a kerchief. I said "okay, how long?" "Oh about 50 inches. That should cover my shoulders right?" :rofl
ETA: By the way, I make two per ball of S&C but it depends on hook size and how many rows you add on. :)

I did one this morning...or rather most of. I can't finish the endging because I ran out of yarn...go figure! So I'm going to buy more this afternoon to finish it. I didn't have any problems with it. Worked up fast and it's just too easy! lol!! I'll post a pic after I actually finish the edge.

I love it . :manyheart I was looking for some kerchief patterns and couldn't fine one I relly liked. I think I'll make some for my 2 cousins and my neice. Both of my cousins have birthdays this summer and since they're sisters, I might make them matching ones.

I just made one. I think it's a little too big for me so I'd go with 13 or maybe 12 rows, but it's **** cute!!!
Also, you are missing the 3dc in the last dc, turn in Row 4 of your pattern.
I couldn't do the bullion stitch no matter how many times I tried, so I just did the shell edging. I'll get a pic later and post in show and tell. If I ever take it off...hehehe

I made one too, and I love it. I used RH Lustersheen though, and also had to skip the bullion stitch. I couldn't do it no matter what, either. I just did the shell edging like trish. I love it, and will post a pix soon!

Tiggzie,
I really want to make these for my GDs but I'm a little confused:think In reading the directions I came across "shell in a shell". I don't know what that means.:blush :eek
Thanks for your help:clap
Tiggzie
May 27th, 2005, 06:21 PM
"shell in shell" just means to do a shell stitch into the ch1 space of the previous shell.
Also, for those having problems with the Puffy McPuffPuff stitch, cheat. I don't usually pull the hook through all the loops at once, I do them one at a time. Still gives the same effect and it doesn't leave me wanting to yank my hair out.
Thanks for that correction trish. I'll fix that right now. :)

Tiggzie,
Okay, let's show everyone how dumb I really am:angry :angry :angry How do I make a "shell" stitch:think :think
UR an :angel for helping me
Tiggzie
May 28th, 2005, 04:41 PM
A shell stitch is usually something like 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in one space. I believe I stated in the beginning of the pattern what a shell stitch was. :) If you need any more help do not hesitate to ask. I'll do my best to make is clear :hug

I'm just bumping this to let everyone know that I am currently making a shawl out of this in Bernat Harmony and a K hook. I think a bigger hook might have worked better but it's still coming along wonderfully and I'll post it in the show and tell section when finished. So if anyone was toying with making this into a shawl, go for it. It definitely works out well hehe.

Okay, I give! :thair I just know I'm going to feel stupid for this, but I just can't get past this first row! :eek Am I missing something here? :think
Row 1: Ch 3. Dc 2 in third ch. Ch 1, skip second ch and 3 dc into first ch. Turn.
"Dc 2 in third ch", I figured you meant 2 dc in the 3rd ch from hook. But it's the rest of it I can't figure out - am I supposed to turn the piece to get to the first chain, stretch across from the end of the row back to the beginning, work from the bottom, or what? I'd really like to make this scarf, but I guess I need a little help starting out... It must be me, since everyone else seems to have had an easy time of it. I just know I'm going to be going "duh" when somebody explains it to me, but whatever! I'm stuck, and pride is going out the window before the yarn does! TIA!

Excuse me if you think I'm being a know it all, but I've read it, several times I must admit, and I think by '3rd chain' it means the last one you made. First chain being the bit with the start of work. See if that works! If not then I'm going to fail miserably!

Whoops, I haven't been around lately! Sorry! :manyheart
Yes, the third chain means the last one you made, ie the one right next to the hook. First chain would be the first one you made. Does that make sense?
And yeah, I think the pattern should print out okay.
Thank you for all the compliments, etc etc. I truly appreciate it and I'm glad so many of you like the pattern. Happy hooking!! :hook

Okay, that makes sense, except that I'm finding it dang near impossible to squeeze my hook into that next stitch for a dc. Is the "Ch 3" you have listed at the beginning of row 1 the foundation chain? I can't help feeling like there's a few chains missing. I tried fudging a bit, chaining another 3 and calling the first of the 2 dc you call for in that first stitch, but then I end up with only 2 dc in that stitch (including the ch3 "dc") and 3 are called for on the other side. There should be 3 to a side, though, shouldn't there be?
Looking at subsequent rows, it's obvious the starting ch3 is counted as the first dc, so what I guess I'm saying is - is there a starting chain I'm not seeing in the pattern? Am I missing that? That's what seems to be missing to me...
I'm going to pretend there's a starting chain of 3, then do the ch 3 "dc" plus 2 dc in the first chain, go from there and see how that works. I really want to make this kerchief, in case you can't tell! It's really pretty and worth trying to get past this little spot, imo.

I finished this last night, but must remember to check things as I work, I guess. I did 15 rows, then modified the edging, skipping the buillion row altogether, and changing the shells to (2 dc, ch1, 2dc), making a flatter edge.
It's beautiful! :) But it's also huge! :eek:think I'll see if my daughter likes it, but I think I botched this one. :blush

Edging: Ch 3. 2 dc in next dc. *Ch 1, dc-b-dc in space, ch 1.* Repeat * to * until point. Shell in shell. Repeat rom * to * until last space. 3 dc in last dc. Turn.
What does this mean, "dc-b-dc" ?? I've never seen a "b" used in a pattern before.
And what does this mean: "Repeat rom" ???
TIA!

November 22nd, 2005, 07:31 PM
I think that the B means a boullion stitch and the rom was suposse to be the word from. You can really finish this shawl anyway you want. I did mine in 5 dc shells.

I'm going to pretend there's a starting chain of 3, then do the ch 3 "dc" plus 2 dc in the first chain, go from there and see how that works.
This is what I did too, I thought it was really odd that I had 1 "petal" with 2 dc's and 1 "petal" with 3.... so I did ch 3... then ch 3 more...
Working out great! I can't wait until it's done! Going very quickly too...
Tina
Thanks again!
EDIT: I forgto to add: I didn't use the "puffy" edging, just a single crochet around the edge.

I made this into a shawl for my shawl swap partner and she loves it! I am making one for my daughter to wear over her dress for her 8th grade graduation. Her dress is a bit bare in the back and she is a little uncomfortable with that. I will post pics when it's done. Thanks for such a great and versatile pattern!!!! It can be made as big or as small as you want!

I am just wondering if you mean (at the beginning of a row) ch 3, 2dc in same stitch so that it would match the other end where you do 3dc in the last dc?
The ends just don't match well when I put the 2dc in the next stitch.
