I'm looking for a pattern for a sweet 71 yr old lady who would like to crochet a specific type of hat and can't find a pattern for it. She is not an advanced crocheter, so she won't want to modify a pattern or just wing it. She says:
"I've been trying for years now to find a crochet pattern for a wide, stiff brim hat! The kind of brim I want to do sticks way out straight and the top of the hat is flat."
Anyone know of any patterns that fit that description?
Many thanks!
UPDATE: Thanks all - there are some great suggestions below, and my friend is delighted with them!

ive found that holding two strands of yarn together gives better shape to hats. but that also compromises on the finish. if i use a single strand i have to crochet very tightly, with a much smaller hook than normal , for the hat to hold its shape. - all this, when the hat is worked in sc around.

Tisket-A-Tasket Hat (http://www.freepatterns.com/list.html?mode=list&offset=21&limit=21&status_id=A&cat_id=335) on Freepatterns.com seems exactly what you are looking for. You have to sign up for the free patterns then click on Crochet/Wearables/Jewelry & Accessories. The hat is on page 2, 4th row on the left. It's a pdf file and free.
Eastwoodly Hat (http://www.youradultstore.net/cp/) by Dot is similar to what you described.
Sun Hat (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=48984.0) on Craftster another as you described and too cute.
Cotton Brimmed Straw Hat (http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/ckc-hat.html) on LionBrand site could work if you make the brim wider and put millinery wire around the brim.

Thank you, ladies! Some of those look very promising - I will pass them along. A couple of the links didn't work; I managed to find the Eastwoodly Hat here http://bythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/121.html
But I can't access the second link in Susan (DoubleTreble)'s post - there are a load of ****s in the address!
Thank you all - I'm sure my friend will be very happy! If you have any more suggestions, please let me know :)

Got it now! Thanks Susan...
UPDATE: My friend is delighted with the patterns and has started on one of them already (not sure which; it's one that calls for 2 strands held together) - she says it's just what she has been looking for!
So thank you all so very much for making a very sweet lady very happy! :cheer

I have edited out the original link that appeared with all ****, plus any additional information giving more details about it.
As someone else mentioned already, whenever a site's URL appears with a bunch of asterisks, it's because we've set our filters not to allow links to that particular site, since it's not compatible with our guidelines for some reason. In many cases, this is because a site is distributing copyrighted patterns or patterns featuring trademarked characters/images without any statement that they have permission from the copyright holders to do so.
We also don't allow links to any internet archive sites to prevent issues with copyright infringement. If an original site or page on a site is no longer available, it's because the owner has chosen not to make it available for whatever reason. If we distributed links to such patterns through an internet archive, we are in effect redistributing the pattern without permission of the copyright holder.
From what I understand, there isn't any issue with anyone using an internet archive on their own, just like they would search through a library. But there may be a concern with widespread distribution of links to patterns, allowing many people to find them and access them, with the end result that we have aided and abetted distribution without permission of the copyright holder.
This is why we've been advised not to allow links to patterns available in internet archive sites when they are no longer available on their original sites.
