Is it a closed shell pattern, or an open one?
If it's closed, the shells in the rows after the first close in the space between the shells in the previous rows. If it's open, the shells are on top of each other, leaving a lacey space between the shells.

Maybe somebody here would be able to work up what you have in mind....

A 9trc shell wouldn't be a 'beginner's pattern'.

Was this online? One of annies free patterns of the day? Was it a vintage pattern or new? For a doily or afghan?
More information would be helpful in locating it. There are a lot of "fan" style patterns out there. I did one in a Crochet Today magazine for a shawl, but that's probably not the one you're looking for, I think it had 7 trc together to make it a fan, sort of like a ripple or wave effect.

That's the one I was thinking of! I've done it and it really isn't that difficult. It was one of the first patterns I ever did. Just be careful while working on it, my toes used to get caught because of the slight openness caused by the triples
