I'm "game."

My project will be an original design of a Ren style tunic sweater top.

Why it's a challenge: Mainly use of crochet cables for hem and neckline and sleeve insertion and trim where the cables are sideways, but also for the type of fitting and shaping I will be going for.

Not only is this project a challenge from a crochet standpoint, but from writing the pattern standpoint.

I hope when the flame is extinquished in Beijin, that not only will this garment be completed and ready for me to wear, but that the pattern itself will be written and typed in final draft form and either posted to a site like this, or submitted for publication with a magazine, book or calendar.

I hope I will be considered and selected as a "crochet athelete" for the 2008 Games of Ancient Greece!

I'm in! I'm going to make the Chevron Blanket pattern from the book Vintage Crochet. It's a challenge for me because I've never been able to do the chevron/ripple stitch correctly...and I get amazingly bored with blankets! Definitely a real stretch but I love that blanket in the pic. I will be using a yarn similar to the one in the pattern (Rowan Cashsoft) but hopefully a little less expensive....

I am going to make 10 dishcloths for Christmas presents. This is a challenge for me because I don't have very much time to crochet and I like to procrastinate.

If teams are created and someone needs help with some type of square, I am willing to change my challenge.

Thanks for getting this all together!!

Good Luck everyone!!

I will attempt to make not one, but two lapghans for Sissie44's seniors during the allotted time. Granny squares made from ww yarn, sewn together and bordered in 16 days. At least 3' by 4', in August with my elderly air conditioner struggling to keep my hot-flashing self cooled.:lol
I hope others will join me and we can form a team to keep these seniors warm this winter. I'm off to post my challenge on Sissie's thread.

I'm in! I had so much fun last time and hope I have as much success this time as I did then!

My goal is to finally make myself the beautiful Drops Circle Jacket (http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=99&d_id=3&lang=en) for quite awhile now! I have been laboring on 2 afghans for graduations for awhile now and it will be so nice to make something just for me!!!! I am not sure which color or yarn I will use. I'm thinking either a cream or beige and I'm thinking maybe a cotton type yarn but again, I'll have to see what I can find.

This will be challenging for me to complete not only because I have a hard time with DROPS patterns in general because most of them aren't written in English Terminology, but completing this large of a project in such a short time I am sure will be quite a challenge in itself.

Thanks for hosting this Amy & Donna! I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun!!!! :hook

Ok, I'm in. I will attempt to make 189 - 8" squares (enough for 3 blankets), to be donated to angelfire, for FA Awareness. http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=73520

Why is this a challenge to me? Because that's ALOT of squares! :lol
I encourage you all to join me so we can form a team and help find a cure for FA!!!!! :hug

I wish to sign up but I will be doing an original creation.. lovingly referred to as...
"Darski's 16 piece Wedding and Trousseau ensemble for an 18 inch doll"

I'll try to get a better name before August. :wlol

I have yet to decide on yarns or even all the elements. Part of the 'game' will be to come up with 16 items or only 16 items. Hope this works for these games.

This will be a challenge for me because it is a set deadline and a lot of stuff to create. I'm thinking the dress will take a couple of days alone so it should be interesting to see if I can do it at all.

I think I'll be brave and join too! I've never been much of an athlete, but this I think I can handle...

I will attempt to make ten covered ball ornaments (like these http://pandacrochet.8m.com/ornaments.html - I have some other patterns saved too, but that was the quickest link I could find!) during the Greek games. I want to give them as gifts this holiday season. I need to make more than 10 total, but 10 sounds like a nice round number to try to get done in 16 days... :D

This is a challenge for me for several reasons.
1) I have yet to work in thread (though I sure plan to practice before the games start!).
2) I have problems working in the round.
3) I am always working on Yule/Christmas presents up until the last minute, and I'd really like to be ahead of the game this year!

I'm going to be using glass ball ornaments that I bought at the after-Christmas clearance sales in January, and assorted colors of crochet thread from my stash (for someone who has yet to work with thread, I sure have a lot! LOL).

I hope we all come home with medals! :D

I'm in :clap

I'm making a graphghan, but I haven't decided what character I'll depict in the graphghan. Probably Elvis again.

I've made the Elvis graphghan several times, but it always took me the better part of a month to complete. However, I never worked on it constantly, plus I included prep time in the month. This time, I'll do the prep (gauge stitches, ball rolling) before August.

The last Crochet Olympics two years ago, I made a Snow White baby graphghan. I completed it with nearly a week to spare; however the Elvis graphghan is more than twice the size. However, it doesn't have as many color changes.

I'm in, and after being egged on by my hubby here is my challenge:

I'm going to do the Double Wedding Ring Quilt (http://www.coatsandclark.com/Crafts/Crochet/Projects/AfghansThrows/WT1647+Wedding+Ring+Quilt.htm) However before you all think I'm crazy, I'm doing it lapghan sized. If you look at the chart for it, I'll be doing the bottom left corner.. a 2-ring by 2-ring block, based on the guage it should measure roughly 42x42 when done.

This will be a challenge for me because I will have 16 days to make and assemble the 49 required pieces, and the pattern is rated as a 4/4 difficulty. I have to pace myself to get it done, 4 1/2 pieces a day for the first 11 days then join 10 pieces a day in the home stretch final 5 days.

Oh, this is going to be FUN!

I mainly make amigarumis and purses, small fast things that don't usually require paying constant attention to the pattern. But, I've been drooling over this pattern for a Celtic Cross wall hanging forever, I really want to starch it and hang it over my fireplace. I've never done filet before (but I have done charted patterns) so I might be in a bit over my head for a first one, but that's where the challenge comes in. After all, it's mainly double crochets and spaces that follow a pattern right?

Oh yeah, the pattern: http://hometown.aol.com/suzlmom/Cross.html (http://hometown.aol.com/suzlmom/Cross.html)

I'll have to buy some thread and an appropriate sized hook too, I don't have any that go below F right now.

Reminder: please post in this thread ONLY after you have made your final project selection. If you are undecided about your project at this point in time, you may post about your dilemma over in the Greek Games Training (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78225) thread. That thread is going to be full of people talking about all their various ideas for what they might choose to make.

As soon as you've made your decision, you can come back over here and let us know your final selection. Don't worry---you have until August 8 to make your decision. Although you'll probably want to make the decision way before then so you can make sure you'll have all the yarn and everything else you might need before the games begin. :)

Count me in!! :yes I'm going to make the Blue Star Afghan out of Herrschner's Blue Ribbon Afghans Book (isbn 0848714601)

This is a huge challenge for me because of the size and the fact that I HATE attaching my crochet, especially the part where things have to properly connect together.

Ohhhh, I'm soooo exited!! I can't wait until the games begin!!:jumpyay

I'm probably crazy but I would like to sign up to do a stole for my mother in law. I finally found a nice pineapple stole pattern and I have some lace weight black alpaca from a local farm. Then to add a touch of color, I want to use a bit of hand spun green, blue and purple silk that I spun this weekend. I've never tried lace weight in crochet before, or pineapples, so this should be interesting.

My project is a blanket as part of a baby boy layette.
This is a challenge for me because, at the beginning of this year, I had planned two layettes ( girl and boy ) as donations to a charity raffle, and Cupcake had very generously given me two of her brilliant patterns ( booties and a square) to use for this purpose. As I was picking out the jacket and cap patterns, and checking out available colours of yarn, my father fell ill, and died. Though I continued to crochet it was more as something to do, and certainly I was in no state to make items fit for donation.
Three months have passed, and though the grief remains as deep, I have managed to recover some of my composure. So I shall use the Games to get the blanket done. I am not being too ambitious and going for the entire layette, since I don't want to fail utterly.

Hi! I'm in!:crocheting

I'm going to do a filet - not sure if I want to do it in white or ecru thread or even a sport weight alpaca so it's a throw....

I've always wanted to design my own piece of Filet with a strong :kangaroo Australian :kangaroo historical theme, so I made a chart using Sandcastle Design's Filet Software (which is really a great program) commemorating ANZAC Day.

This is a challenge because it's my first time designing a filet pattern and only my third time doing filet. Not to mention we'll be commissioning our :construct project at work in August.

I'm in. I will be challenging myself to make 2 lapghans for Sissie44's senior citizens. This is chanlleging because it would take me 2 weeks or more to make 1 and I AM GOING to do two and I don't crochet in the summer because of the heat so this is definitely going to be a workout. They will be ripple lapghans.

Challenges:

~ I will write up my pattern for this. (I've never written such an intensive, complicated or long pattern before in my life!)

Okay, I've finally decided. I'm going to do the Sunny Spread from Crochet Today Jan/Feb issue: http://www.crochettoday.com/articlepage.aspx?articleid=219 for my MIL. I'm going to do it in either RH Hunter Green or Dark Sage This is going to be a challenge for me 1) because it's so big and 2) because I don't like making afghans that I have to piece together. I already have the yarn for it, so I'm off to ball, and do swatches.

Got my project picked out. I found the pattern for a vest that my 4H leader gave me a long, long time ago. She couldn't figure it out so she gave it to me to try. I think I started it once and gave up, but I was only about 10 yrs. old. Now I am going to try it for this event!
It is in worsted weight. Haven't decided on colors yet. I may actually make it for myself!

I'm in and I plan to do two different things. I will get squares or a lapghan made for Sissie's nursing home project and I will make FARA squares. This is a challenge for me because when I start a project I stick to it, which means that other stuff I have promised or gotten involved with gets shoved aside and then I find myself rushing and that's unacceptable to me. These 16 days will be dedicated to these two charity projects.

Count me in. ^___^

I plan on doing a crocheted lace shawl of my own design. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while (I have the yarn, and a bunch of lace patterns to swatch), so hopefully this will spur me on to complete it.

It's going to be a challenge for me because I have a hard time sticking to one project and I will be designing this one almost entirely from scratch (I will be swatching the lace patterns I have in mind beforehand to make sure they work with my idea, but I won't do any work on the shawl design proper until the torch is lit).

That, and it's a LACE SHAWL in 16 DAYS. Can I do it? I hope so. :yes

Edit: Also, I'd like to be on the Designer's Team if it ends up being made. Otherwise, I'll "compete" individually.

I am in. I will be doing a filet crochet of an angel and Christmas tree. If I am unable to locate a copy of the pattern, I will chart it from a picture of a completed project. This will be a challenge as I have not actually done any filet projects yet (other than an aborted attempt at a bookmark around Valentine's Day...) and I have certainly not charted any. It is a 60 x 60 mesh which seems reasonably large enough to be a challenge to finish, but small enough to have a hope of doing so. :) I'd love to join a Team Filet if one gets going...

My project: An original handbag with a pattern.

The Challenge: I've never written a pattern (for anything beyond a few rows). I want to learn to write a pattern & this is a great challenge to myself to do it.

No link to a pattern lol, but I hope to have one at the end of the games. ;)

I'd like to be a part of the Designers Team since it is going to be an original pattern.

Ok, I'm in.

I really want to do fingerless mittens/gloves.

This is a challenge for me because I have so little experience with wearable patterns. They can be really intimidating for me to understand the patterns as I have limited concentration due to brain injury.

I am considering doing them in Homespun as I have a couple new skeins in my stash.

Thanks!

Hi I would like to join the Games.

I am going to make a Cuddle afghan in little Saltine (granny) squares using my own designed picture using the basic cuddle ghan concept from Cara's website www.happyyellowhouse.com

I will be using Carnival 8 ply yarn and this will be a challenge for me as there are a total of 360 squares to make and sew together and then do a border.

I would like to be a part of Team Afghan.

I will be making a filet crochet, at least 3' by 2', and I will design it myself. I'll post my design as soon as I have it completed

I've always wanted to try filet crochet and this will be a challenge because I have never done a filet crochet or designed one. I'm also taking the CGOA Masters in Basic Crochet and this will be a great way for me to me to practice filet.

I would also love to be on Team Filet if one is created.

I'm going to make a baby set with at least a sweater and blanket...The blanket of my own design (i'll make it up as I go) and the sweater will probably be either a bico or the one on caron's website. Probably will also make booties and a hat.
This will be a challenge for me because I'm a working full-time student in my final year of college (when all the hard classes are) and also because I rarely have the patience to complete all of a project in one go, but I'm hoping doing four things will help that problem a little.

I would like to be on Team Baby.

Ok I'm officially in now, DH has been after me to make us new Christmas stockings for years I finally broke down and bough the yarn last year in the after Christmas sales (RH Holiday in red, green, white, red/green all with silver running through) I need to make 4, one each for me, DH, DS, and our cat, if I have enough yarn I'd like to make a set as a wedding present (yeah sounds a bit odd I know) for my lil bro and his fiancee. I've never made anything sock oriented before so this might be tough. using this pattern http://www.coatsandclark.com/Crafts/Crochet/Projects/Seasonal/WR1561+Crochet+Holly+Stocking.htm though I'll be making them striped instead of solid

not sure what team I'd fit in but put me where you think I fit

I am going to make The " Bed Of Roses" blanket. The link is http://www.coatsandclark.com/Crafts/Crochet/Projects/Print+Ads/CTAUG06+Bed+of+Roses+Blanket.htm
this will be hard for me because I haven't learned treble crochet yet but I think I can do it. The only ajustment will be I will make it into a smaller size than the start it is for my aunt but she collects lapghans not blankets. So I want to sign up.

Please sign me up! I've had this pattern for a long time, and I always have it on my to-do list. However, it never gets-done! That's why it would be a challenge! I'd love to finally start and finish this.

It's the crocheted gingerbread house from Annie's Attic.

Why I'ts A Challenge: I've never crocheted any type of clothing before. Also, I have never made anything that has had to "fit" my body, so this should be interesting...

Time to start training!

My project is a Harry Potter afghan stitch pillow for my dd 10th b'day. It's a challenge because I need to learn how to follow a graph and do color changes in afghan stitch, then graph out the pic that I have in my head all without her nosy self finding out....ssssh it s a surprise! I'm practicing now but it's not going so well.....

I'm in. :)

I'm going to make the Coziest Sweater from the Nov/Dec 2007 Crochet Today. I've had the yarn (Moda Dea Tweedle Dee in Indigo Run) since November but haven't gotten around to doing it. Just been busy and working on other things.

It's a challenge for me because I live in Florida and making a sweater in August is insane and because I've never completed a garment that quickly. So we'll see. I think I can do it, I just need something kicking my tail to make me do it. I design full time so taking time out to crochet something for me is always a challenge.

Ok well I had a project but decided to change it, I found one and I am sticking to it. It is for a gift for christmas for some really really good friends of ours. It is called "Cross Afghan". It is out of the book called "Crochet Holiday Collection" by Donna Scott. ISBN number is 1573671185. It is on page 24. It will be a challenge because I have never done an afghan with so many color changes before, actually I have never made an afghan of this size before either(49 1/2"X72").It will also be a challenge because I will have both of my young children to deal with as well. There is the pic of the book and the pic of the cross afghan.

Hi,
I'd like to do something a little different for my challenge. I'm going to attempt to make 100 - 6 x 9 rectangles in the 16 days to donate to
http://www.rectangle6x9.org/
Rectangles for the Troops

100 is just a few more than the rectangles needed to make two afghans. I'd need to make 6.25 per day to make the deadline. With my schedule for August it will be very tough to make it but I want to try. Also I thought if I can train by making additional rectangles - NOT TO BE COUNTED IN THE 100! - that's even more I can donate. Maybe another 47????? That would make three afghans.
If making "training rectangles" would break the rules I could make them after the games are complete.
Does this qualify as an event?
UPDATE:
I've been trying a few stitches since I posted this just to time myself and I'm afraid I won't be able to finish 100 in 16 days. I'm going to ask for your patience while I get my hook hand into shape. I may have to reset the number of rectanges for the 16 days. I will still be making the 100+ but maybe I need to be more realistic about the time allowed. Can I wait to post the number of rectangles for a few weeks?

I will attempt to make not one, but two lapghans for Sissie44's seniors during the allotted time. Granny squares made from ww yarn, sewn together and bordered in 16 days. At least 3' by 4', in August with my elderly air conditioner struggling to keep my hot-flashing self cooled.:lol
I hope others will join me and we can form a team to keep these seniors warm this winter. I'm off to post my challenge on Sissie's thread.

I would like to join this team as I promised a lapghan so I might as well make two.

Why is this a challenge to me? Because that's ALOT of squares! :lol
I encourage you all to join me so we can form a team and help find a cure for FA!!!!! :hugI will join your team, I will make 49 squares . It will be a challenge because at the same time I will be making 4 rectangles a day to keep a promise to make 1000 rectangles for the troops by Dec 31st.

I am going to make a purse for myself. It's a challenge because I have started it twice, picked several different patterns, and it is still currently 4 skeins of yarn and some fabric. I am going to make up a pattern, and I think I've settled on one. I never focus long enough to finish a project in a reasonable time span, so I am going to start and finish it in time. For my own personal judging, this must include the strap, the lining, and washing it - everything to get in tip-top shape to use.

I am proud to represent the "country" BOB! (I just like the name. lol) My challange will be a horse/unicorn for my daughter. It's from a pattern that I found on the web. The level is considered advanced beginner. While I consider myself in the advanced intermediate, catagory, this will be a challange as I have never made a stuffie before. It is also during the beginning of my school year. So, new project, short time frame, very busy/hectic/stressful time period. But, this will be my stress reliever and a birthday present. It's things like these games that keep me motivated.

My friends have shared their excitement...so I'm in!

I'll be making an afghan for a teen or a bit younger for a charity group. It'll either be made of squares (patterns drawn from various sources) or be a RR.

The challenge for me in this is the time limit - I need to get in gear and begin making these, so this is the perfect opportunity!

Well I was gonna work up a new quit design to do for this. But after talking to my BIL last night and thinking on it today I've decided to make a full afghan from this square (http://www.happyyellowhouse.com/htm/medsq.html) of mine.

It's looking like BIL and his GF might be tying the not toward the end of the year so I'm gonna make this in Ivory for a wedding gift :yes

My project will be a new laptop/book bag... I've been designing it on paper for a while and I have the idea in my head.. This will be a challenge for me because I have always used a pattern for projects. I will be using recycled yarn (I was given several balls of yarn in neutral tones and figure since I have it and I don't have a lot of money it will work.) I hope to "pad" a section of the tote as it will carry my laptop...

Start and finish my Diagonal stitch shawl (I have started twice and turned them into afghans:blush)
Join one of my Afghans (I have at least 1 waiting by then I should have 2)

Why will this be challenging? I have a habit of changing things into afghans and I love doing the squares, just joining them can be a challenge

I'm not sure how much I'll be able to do, I still haven't gotten my exact scheduled c-section date, but I will be out of the hospital for sure by the time the games start. Taking into account my mom will have to leave shortly after the games start, and I'm not certain if my m-i-l will be coming up afterwards for any amount of time to help with baby and my 3 1/2 year old, I don't want to sign up for anything too big.

I have a pattern I printed off from the free pattern of the day (Annie's Attic) years ago, Bagdalena Bear, it's a plastic bag holder. I've been wanting to make it since I printed it off, but it always seems to get put to the way side. This may be my chance to actually get it done. Goodness knows we have enough plastic bags around the house.
I take fabric bags with me when I go shopping, but somehow I end up with 1 or 2 plastic bags coming home anyway, and then there are the bags that come home when hubby goes shopping... he never takes bags with him.
I better start going through my yarns to make sure I have everything ready for the games, I won't feel much like searching through everything and getting the colours just right after having baby.
Maybe as a practice I'll make a crochet bag with the Olympic rings on it, that way I know it's my stuff for the crochet Olympics!

Anyway, for the games, I will be making 10 mini-PK doilies out of "The Best of Patricia Kristofferson" book. One for each aunt/cousin on my mother's side, for Xmas.

I'm not typically a threadie, plus I will be on vacation for much of the time, so it will be a challenge to get it all done while I'm driving from place to place. At least it will be portable!

Well, I'm jumping into this challenge! My project is going to be a pair of socks. This is such a challenge for me because I'm horrible at wearables! I've done afghans and doilies and dishcloths and such, and now it's time to branch out into something to wear. I am just miserable at piecing pieces. I can never get the finished project to look right. So, to add to my challenge, I am going to piece together a sweater I crocheted last Fall, yes, 10 months ago! for my DD. It is all completed with the exception of joining the pieces. I've tried and tried and never got it to look right, so I am going to include the piecing in my Greek games challenge! I am hoping by the end of training and the challenge I will be more comfortable with joining and not so intimidated! :eek

I would like to join the games.

I will be making the country check afghan by Cara @ Happy Yellow House.com. It's new and hasn't been put on the site yet but her test ghan is on the "Every Happy House Needs"...thread.

It's a challenge because:

1. There are 567 saltine squares of 2 different colors that must be sewn together and a border added.
2. I am a store manager with unconventional hours.
3. I've always been challenged when working with saltines and haven't completed the projects.

I would like to participate as well--
What am I going to make? an afghan made from scraps using this technique: http://www.yarncat.com/JoinAsYouCrochetGSBlankets.html

Why is it a challenge? I just cant seem to get the hang of it. If Im on a deadline then I can force myself to learn and get it accomplished.

I cant wait to start!

Edit- I will still be making the same project, but my friend came over last night and showed me how to do it and its easy peasy lemon squeezy, so I will be making 2 of these for lapghans to donate. The challenge, Ive never made a whole one, so two in such a short amount of time will be a great challenge.

What fun! I'm so glad I clicked on this thread!

I'm going to be crocheting Robyn Chachula's Rugged Vest for my DH. I don't know what the URL for the pdf is, but there's a link for it here on CPC: Rugged Guy's Vest (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/men.php).

Seems like a simple enough pattern, but why is it a challenge for me?

1. I've been promising DH I'd make him this vest for almost a year now! I need some serious motivation to get started on it.
2. The entire thing is worked with a small-ish hook (H) and sport-weight yarn, which means it will definitely be a challenge to finish it in two weeks!
3. The pattern looks fairly monotonous, which normally for me means it will be a challenge just to keep from getting bored. I think this Crochet Olympics idea will add some excitement to it!

Can't wait to get started! I'm adding it to my calendar now.

If you want to be officially recognized as part of a specific team or individual competitor, please go over to this thread (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78221) and post your preference. Post 2 show the list of teams, and post 3 tells you how to let me know where you want to sign up.

I can't resist getting in on the fun here. :hook I'll be doing the Butterfly Doily with Linen Center available here http://www.hassdesign.com/CrochetAlong/Linen/Butterfly/ I've had this pattern for a couple years so it's time I tackle it. I've never done a doily with a linen center before, plus this is more difficult than previous filet pieces I've done. It's done in size 20 thread which I haven't worked much with. It will be a challenge. :cheer I'll be preparing by doing the coaster and smaller doily pattern that come with it.

I want to join too. I plan on making a crocheted baby set and a baby blanket. Its a challenge because I have limited time to crochet it. It is a charity project. I would love to join this. I will be doing the Ghostly Runner table runner pattern designed by Cylinda Matthews. This is a challenge for me because I am not to great with thread or filet and this is both rolled into one, not to mention a table runner at that. I also work full time. So this is a great challenge in alot of ways (filet, thread, time) for me.

I wanted to do the WinterWonderland Runner by Cylinda as well, but it is a good deal bigger and I feel I'm pushing it with the ghostly one LOL

I'm in! I am going to be making the Shrug-a-licious and will be using a deep eggplant suede-like yarn for it. The yarn was gifted to me so I'm not sure about brand/weight, etc...but the pattern will work well with it because of the adjustments you can make.

This will be a challenge for me because I work full time as well as doing stitching assignments for a needlework company...so time is at a real premium for me. :yes

Ok after much thought I think I figured out what I want to make for the games.

I'm going to do a filet that I need to still design so not sure of the size but I think it will be for a wall hanging.

This will be a challange for me because I've only really done one other small filet a looooong time ago and will have to get back into it plus it will be the first one I will have designed. If it goes well I have to make a few more for anniversary presents.

Hi. I posted a reply earlier but it dissappeared!
I am going to try to make and finish the Hideway Cow from E-Pattern Central for a young friend who's nursery theme is Western. The cow has an opening in back for a baby afghan. So I have to make the cow AND the afghan!
This is a challenge for me as I live and work in Saudi Arabia, but will be in Savannah, GA on the 8th of August for my daughter's wedding on the 10th! I will then be in Atlanta till the 16th. I will be flying for almost 3 days, and will finally be "home" in Saudi on the 18th. SO, not much time! THAT is my challenge! The baby is due in September and I want to have it finished before we go back to school on the 26th of August.

Oh I really really don't want to do this but...........how to I un-join the games? My husband just got deployed and all of a sudden my free time (which wasn't much to start with) has disappeared! Especially now, with practice starting for fall sports, getting ready for school, and getting ready to potty train, by the end of the night I'm exhaused and have absolutely no interest in lifting my eyelids, not to mention a crochet hook. So I guess I'll just watch from the bleachers and cheer for all the athletes!

I've given this a lot of thought and there is no way I'll be able to correctly write a pattern for the ghan that I'm doing in the time frame I have. I'm not even sure I'll be able to complete the ghan with the way my carpel tunnel is acting up - but I'm going to try.

So, Amy, can you remove the 'with pattern' part of my entry?

I'm going to attempt the Well Traveled Bag (free pattern on Ravelry) and substitute 100% acrylic yarn (Bernat Softee Chunky) in place of the 100% wool the pattern calls for. My colors are soft blue, dusty rose and bright white.

This will be a challenge for me because I've never attempted to crochet bags before. I'll also be learning the reverse single crochet stitch (a.k.a. crab stitch) to use as a finishing stitch around the top of the bag.

Please add me to the athletes for the games competition. My goal is to complete 2/3 of my "Cubes" quiltghan pattern. This is done in the style of the afghans at Happy Yellow House. That will be to make and join 200 of the 300 saltines that make up this quiltghan. It is a challenge on several points. 1) I've never made and joined this many saltines in this short a time period. 2) There are 8 colors in the pattern and 2/3 of the saltines are bi-color saltines. 3) There are countless ways to mess up the pattern. This is the pattern but the colors in the actual ghan will be more vivid than this.

I'd like to join too.

My plan is to design and crochet a handbag of some sort.

This is a challenge for me because I have never designed anything in crochet before, I have a tendency to procrastinate, and I will have a time crunch. I work and we will be away for part of the time, (although I hope to be able to squeeze in some crochet time, while we are gone).

My plan at the moment is to use some nylon yarn that I know is around here somewhere, but that will change if I cant find it. I am thinking of using two different colors so I hope to be able to find some more of that nylon too.

Please add me to the SKY team. Thanks.

Okay Amy, I am in for the games.

My project is a filet wall hanging 50 x 80 blocks without a border (for now). "Bless all who enter the Allen house"

It is a challenge because I have never done any filet work at all. I have made thread doilies and placemats, but no filet.

It is my own design, with help from Maria Merlino.

I have started swatching, and I will be "in training" as soon as VBS is over!

I would like to be on the design team, and the filet team (if we have those).

Thanks!!

I'll be crocheting a RR of my own design for a Christmas Tree Skirt,

Reason it's a challenge - I'm new to RR, having only made 2. Also, I procrastinate big projects all the time, and I will be starting back to teaching middle schoolers in a brand new school only a few days after this starts, so the commuting and lesson plans take away from the time I have to devote to this project.

oooo this sounds like too much fun. I am going to do a scap afghan in stash yarns, I am going to make it as bright as I can for the children at work. I am going to be using a pattern Designed by Darla Sims 63 easy to crochet patterns stitches: combine to make an heirloom afghan. I work with infants and I think they will like the color and textures.
I think it will be a challenge one doing 63 squares, I am a huge procrastinator, and two there are many stitches I have not tried before.

I'm in. I will be making a baby set.

This is a challenge for me because (1) I looked at the dates I realized that I'm scheduled to work all the weekdays (vacation coverage time -- I usually have every other Friday off) and have weekend plans for each of the weekends. And (2) I usually switch to quilting in the heat and humidity of the summer -- no AC.

I guess this project would put me on Team Baby.

I'm going to make a baby afghan for a friend's expected grandniece. I'll be doing the "Spiderweb" design from Leisure Arts "Snuggle Up Baby Afghans" booklet. The time frame will be a challenge for me, because I work full time and often come home tired and want more than anything to get a quick nap before dinner, and because long stints at crocheting bother my shoulder and wrists.

Sign me up please!

I will be making a baby afghan called "Simply Beautiful" from the Leisure Arts book "Our Best Baby Afghans." I will make this out of Sensations Rainbow Classic in a baby variegated color.

This may not be a large project, but it will be a challenge because this has an ENDING DATE or completion date, unlike so many of my bags and bags of WIPs!!

I'm making this for a friend who has been blessed with a tiny baby boy after hoping for a child for the last 18 years! Her son came early though and was born at 26 weeks and was only 13 inches long and weighed 2 pounds. He is 3 weeks old now and grew a 1/2 inch and gained a half pound!

I plan on crocheting in many prayers and good thoughts into this afghan!

My project for the Greek Games will be Crochet Kim's Sunday Best Sweater for my DH.

The reason it's a challenge for me is because I have tried twice in the last year to make this and both times I have stopped and forgotten where I was and had to frog it. It is now reduced to nine skeins of TLC Essentials Yarn in a lovely steel blue color, sitting and waiting to be started again. Hopefully I will be able to complete it during the 16 days of the Games.

I want to give this a try.

I am going to be doing the Siobhanna Sweater (http://www.gourmetcrochet.com/index_files/Page9849.htm) from Gourmetcrochet.com.

This will be a challenge for me because I am still a beginner. I have only done one other wearable project and a bunch of baby blankets and washcloths so far.

I am still waiting for the pattern to come, but I am very excited to get started on this, I just hope I finish my current knitting WiP before the opening ceremony.

Can I join the wearables team?

OK, after trying to stay away, I have decided to join. I will be attempting to make the airy diamonds afghan from the leisure arts book. I fell in love with the afghan when i saw the one made by goodie2shoes here.

I really want to have this done by the deadline because my husband and I are buying our 1st house and we will be moving in around the end of august/ beginning of september. This will be a challenge to me because it is a long and hard pattern, and i have never even seen it before. Wish me luck!!!!

i'd like to be in the greek games

my project is an afghan, this particular one will be a challenge for me as i don't normally do"strip"type afghans , i try to stick with squares they seem to get done faster or something. anything i have tried strip or row by row has ended up frogged and made into squares!!!
however i saw the Annies Attic POD on the 18th and like the stitch- so will change it slightly-- use worsted weight yarn( do some stash busting) and attempt to complete a non square afghan
it is Pastel Baby Throw from "Old Time Crochet 2001"

wish me luck

This will be a challenge for me because there are 400 saltines and then a border and I haven't made so many in such a short time before.

And I am blaming my friends in the Sky Cal for joining. :lol

I am going to make a RR, I have wanted to make one for a long time so this is motivation. The challenge is that I have never made one before and I work shifts. I don't have a link for the pattern right now, but it is an 8 point RR.

I’m putting a stop to all my hemming & hawing right now – sign me up pretty please!:hook

I will be making this: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/70315AD.html?noImages (http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/70315AD.html?noImages)=
Except using different colors.

While the pattern touts “simplicity”, its going to be a challenge for lil’ ol’ me. I am slow on the big stuff, get distracted easy, and am hoping this will kick start me into holiday gear. Also, part of the challenge will be NOT purchasing yarn for it. I like the colors they used and would really, really love to make it as they suggest, but I have lots of Homespun that I need to use up. I love the stuff but it’s not the easiest yarn to work with, so I have learned its best to go with a Homespun pattern.

I'll be attempting the "Stitch Sampler" aka "Bobbles and Lace" afghan from Afghans for All Seasons. This is a challenge because it is a square afghan with with 81 rounds, a "stitch sampler" using many colors and stitches. 16 days to complete this will be a challenge for me.

This is a challenge because I have not crocheted a single day since the day she was born 11/19/06!!!

So I'm going to hold out and make it for the games this way I can practice. I'ts going to be tough with a 4 yer old and an 18 month old at the time of the games but I'll get it done cause if my son wants his blanket he'll leave mommy be to crochet.:yes

I'm going to do a sweater coat....I found the pattern in a book at the library called "Crochet Squared" by Marsha A. Polk - She calls it "Nutmeg and Cinnamon Jacket" because of the colors...I'm not sure I'm going to use the same colors though.....It's made with eyelash yarn stranded with variegated yarn...

I've NEVER made any type of clothing before......and this is a LARGE project.....so it will be QUITE a challange:eek!!!!

I'm going to set a goal of:
-15 cradle purses (origional design)
-15 pair of wrist warmers (origional design)
I'm going to be doing a craft fair in October, and I've really got to build up a stock of items to sell for then. I'm also looking for other patterns of items that might sell well, but that's my goal for the games. I've already been working on making them, and playing with my patterns. Now, I just need to find and organize some yarn, and wait to get started! I hope to have that many done between now and the start of the games as well. This will be a challenge because it takes about 1 hour to make a cradle purse, and about 1 hour to make a pair of fingerless gloves. Thanks for letting me join!

I will do this pattern, Cottage Bag from Lily's sugar n' cream site. http://www.sugarncream.com/pattern.php?PID=2413 (Have to be a registered member to view the pattern - Free membership)

I found the pattern from my pattern-a-day crochet calender 2008. It's on Sat/Sun, February 2 & 3, 2008. I will make one bag with some Lily sugar n cream potpourri ombre, hook K. It will be bigger than the pattern's suggested finished dimensions.

hello, folks;

i think that i'd like to do this challenge of the ancient greek games. i'm choosing three quilt-ghans found at the happy yellow house {criss cross crochet quilt; woven blocks crochet quilt; and geometry 101 crochet quilt}. i've not yet decided on the yarn or to whom i plan to give each {i like to know who will receive the gifts so that i can think of them while i crochet away}. i am going thru some rough stuff right now, and don't think i am up for learning a new technique at the moment; but i do think that these three quilt-ghans are interesting enough without being too tough for me to do in the time frame of sixteen days (aug 8-24). {by the by, i've not signed up for the SKY saltine smackdown or anything, or any other sort of challenge, crochet along, or swap/exchange...so, i'm not so sure i fit into any of the teams listed...which is fine, really!} the patterns can be found at the happy yellow house. thanks! grins, debra

I want in! It's still time, right?

--What you're crocheting: a top made from Egyptian cotton yarn that I've had for a while. I am going to design the pattern, so far I have a sketch but need to work out the fine details.

--Why this is a challenge for you: because (a) my right hand hurts if I work it too hard, and (b) I will design my own pattern. I've never designed a clothing garment before and hope it'll be wearable.

I'm going to crochet an afghan. As of now, I don't know which one. That in itself is a challenge. Making up my mind.

It will be a challenge because I'm in a wrist brace from crocheting too much LOL. It's painful to crochet and very awkward.

The reason it will be a challenge is, it's difficult for me to stick with just one project from start to finish. I get bored and switch to something else, having 5 or 6 things going at the same time. I really want to make this in time for fall. And I want to win the GOLD! :yes:yay

I am going to try a baby layette dersigned by ShepShepherd from The Needlecraft Shop Pattern booklet.
It is a challange for me because I have never crocheted clothing. I am not a perfectionist and have only done projects like afghans in which the gauge is not critical. I have done some doilies in thread but then again size was not critical.
There is a hat, booties and sweater in the set. I will probably be lucky to complete the sweater.

After much debate and internal struggle I have decided to challenge myself to compete in the games.

My challenge: Christmas Gifts- 13 sets matching beanies and fingerless gloves. Will use variety of patterns for the beanies.

Why this is a challenge: LOL I am very much a "crochet what I want when I want" person. Sitting down and actually following a schedule is VERY hard for me. I need to get a total of 25 matching sets done in time for Christmas for gifts. I figure if I can get half of them done early I am in good shape to get the rest done. ( I am also making Haekelbeutels for gifts too (23+ of them) but they're fun to do so I don't think it will be hard )

Okay folks, I'm in.

I will make 10 different crocheted hats for this challenge. I will also learn two new pattern stitches and incorporate them into the hats. I will use yarn I have laying around...Lion Wool and Lion Cotton, mostly. There are also some odds and ends that I could use.

This is a challenge for me because:
1. I will have to crochet EVERY DAY, not just leave it all to the end.
2. It will be a challenge to design hats with new pattern stitches.
3. It will be a challenge to use up yarn I have, rather than buying new.

the Amish Basket Quilt-ghan from Cara's site http://www.happyyellowhouse.com/
I'm making it 3 blocks by 3 blocks ... using worsted weight yarn ...in Burgandy and cream.

the challenge is there are 576 saltines in it and half of them are 2-colored... that means an average of 36 saltines /day made and joined...

I'm donating it to my Mom's church to use in one of their fund raisers for a new furnace...

I wanted something I could take to Wisconsin with me for my trip. I will be gone Aug. 10th - 17th but update as soon as I am back. I might be back a few days early.

Here is the pattern (http://www.artoftangle.com/snowflake.htm).

Here is the link to my progress (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/TaraStreet/snowflake-afghan) on my Ravelry account.

So I thought it would be a great idea to make a cover for my food processor. Well - low and behold I received one as a gift. So I now need to change my project. I want to work on the kitty in a row afghan. I think I'm going to do a black and orange version of this so that I can display it during October! And use up some of my stash :)

Can my project be updated?

I have decided to try to do this. I was visiting my parents this weekend and working on a baby blanket. My dad who has diabetes was sitting in his recliner watching me crochet. All of a sudden he just happened to say "I wouldn't mind having one of those for my legs". I said, really and that was about it.

I hadn't thought too much more about it until I was driving a 3 hour trip home. I remembered what he said, and with diabetes his circulation isn't the best at 82. I told myself then that I could do it (or at least get most of it done)and use the Olympics to keep me on track. 36 x 48 is what I am going for. Is that correct for a lapghan?

I would like some help from some of you. :think What size yarn and hook would you say to use? I will be doing the same pattern I was with the baby blanket 1sc, 1dc, throughout the lapghan. Any suggestions?

Thanks...I am excited to get some answers so I can get to the store and be ready to start. :yay

This will be a challenge because I return to work at school on the 1st of August and the first day we have students back is th 8th!! Kindergarten is delightful!:yes

Wow! Do I need this motivating "game" to jumpstart me onto my next (6th!) Survivor Ribbon Shawl ~ pattern from our own "RoseRed" of Inspired Crochet! I am in the process of making one in almost all the colors to represent the various cancers, and then they will be raffled at the American Cancer Relay for Life in late October:) and all the proceeds from them will go towards cancer research for a cure and treatments. I have completed 5 of them but hit a little slump so this is just the thing to get me going again on my next one!
I am using Caron by the Pound yarn.
It is a challenge for me time-wise for 3 reasons - of course the deadline set in the "games", but also the "busy-ness" that summer and chaos a ripped out room in a home remodel brings, but lastly - I can be an "ADD" crocheter a lot of times - I am so distracted by other projects I want to start that I can lose focus!!!:lol:lol:lol

I highly recommend what is lovingly called a "3SUB" here. You take a very large hook (P or Q) and 3 strands of yarn. You can use your scraps and have it "mismatched" or use scraps in the same colorway (I used browns, tans and creams for mine). Your size sounds perfect for a lapghan. You can do any stitch - I use 2sc, ch1 and then in the next row you put your 2sc in the ch1 space and skip the scs. The afghan goes by quickly, it is nice and toasty, and has a great "drape" to it for the legs because of the large hook.

I'm loading up a pic now to show you.

I'd like to sign up for the games too. I've finally decided on a project. I want to convert a doily to a ghan. I've never done that before and it sounds interesting. The pattern I'll be using will be the pineapple doily found here (http://www.angelfire.com/art/bubamara/free/pindoily.html)

Also I'd like to be added to Team SKY if I could. Thanks I can't wait to start.

I never said why my project was a challenge. I'm making a quiltghan out of saltines (2 round grannies), and I've never used them on a large project. I also despise sewing things together, I'd rather sc or sl st them. But with this one, I'll have to get my sewing skills ready!

I just read that and Thank God its almost the end of the day, because I did a double take. I can't wait to see your project completed. I admire folks who work the "squares". I did a few blankets and decided that I'm not into the squares at all (I even tried a squares exchange). So with my lack of skill for the squares at a normal size, I can't even begin to imagine the squares in a saltine version

Okay this sounds like a great to get this pattern for a shrug with matching hat done before my dd's first day of school. This is going to be a challange because I work and am in charge of a Crochet group where I work making a variety of items for charity. I seem to find it hard to make the time to do anything for myself.

This is the pattern I will be making.

Sure, if you want to be a heretic and make a knitted project, I'm okay with that. :D I'm just teasing you! Of course it's not a problem at all for you to participate and make a knitted project if that's what you want your challenge to be. We're happy for everyone to select whatever project they want.

The important thing is celebrating the Olympic spirit with each other, not the specific project anyone chooses or what type of craft it is.

ok I lied Im signing up now.
I have chosen to do the rainbow boucle afghan from the Joanns project list. Its project number p059404. This is a big project for me because not only is it knitted I am stricken with a HORRIBLE case of project add and I am one doooozzeyy of a procrastinator. The smallest knitted project that I have ever done is a scarf or socks so if this blanket can keep my attention for sixteen days so that I can finish it, I will definately have accomplished something. Soooo.....see you all at the finish line:devil

I will be doing 50 white stars trimmed in pink or blue to be given to a local NICU as commemorative items to be given to parents who are unable to take their baby home. I've not been able to find pink fun fur lately so will be looking for a substitute yarn as trim for the little girl stars.

I'm going to be making a doily to give to my host family when I go to Madrid to study abroad on Aug 31.
This will be a challenge because it will be the biggest doily I've ever made, and because I will also be trying to finish my summer's tree skirt project.

I will be doing three projects

First of all Mrs. Frost Crinoline doll by crochet memories. This is a challenge because I am not good at thread at all. Thank you Loopy1 for your recommendation!

Second of all I will be making two pairs of slippers. My poor hubby has been slowly but surely recruiting ville members to his side, and I am afraid that I might be lynched if I don't finally make his slippers. So I will make a pair for him using the padded sole slippers I found through cpc, and my own slippers are made from a purchased pattern. This is a challenge not only because I can't seem to get myself to make them, I have also recently found that my feet aren't to scale after my second attempt at my own slippers didn't fit either.

Also I will be away so my crochet time will be limited.

I would like to be on home decor team for the crinoline doll and either accessories or apparrell for slippers, I always forget how they are categorized.

I'm gonna miss Darski! but I do understand about not being able to do what we origionally planned.

I won't be doing my aran ghan this time around.

My carpel tunnel has NEVER been worse than it has been. I was not able to work on my practice pieces or figure out how to convert these stitches to crochet because I couldn't hold a hook. I'll still make this eventually (and my practice piece/swatch is my Dad's Christmas present.)

So, for the games I'll be making a Queen Size Round Ripple in purples.

There's only so many ways to make a round ripple but I do plan on making it interesting.

I will join your team, I will make 49 squares . It will be a challenge because at the same time I will be making 4 rectangles a day to keep a promise to make 1000 rectangles for the troops by Dec 31st.
AmyS,
Will you please add me to the FARA awareness team also

After much debate, I am joining the games :clap
I will be making 3 projects:

1) A Round Ripple Baby Ghan using this (http://www.sewonfire.com/round_ripple_afghan.htm) pattern

2) A 2 strand rug for Nancy to match the ones I made while I was in Florida. It is a design of my own.

3) 2 Scarves made from a pattern off of Bernat yarn label.
I worked up a swatch of the pattern and didn't like it, so am trying to decide what pattern to use.

This will be a challenge to me since most of the time now I am in a neck brace which makes it difficult to crochet. I am now going to Physical Therapy 3 times a week and when I am done with PT, I don't feel like doing much of anything.

Working on 3 different projects will hopefully make it easier for me when I'm in the brace and need to switch it up a bit!!!

I would like to join the Greek Games too.
I have picked Cupcake Purse by Tapanga. I will make 2 of them.
I found mini crinoline ladies.I will make 3 of them.

This will be a challenge because I'm a beginner crocheter. And my eyes are wanting me to do EVERYTHING regardless of skill level,my hands and hook and brain says it's too hard.Plus I have this habit of being on here instead of crocheting. Good Luck fellow athletes. Not sure of the teams but I wouldn't mind being on one. Debra

Can I still participate? I can do it on the sidelines if not. I want to make a Haekelbeutel bag, but may be using different square pattern to complete. This pattern was posted linked from the Haekelbeutel (Crochet Bag) CAL.

I have made a tote with a flap, but not a "bag" like this. I was thinking of lining it with a pillow case. It will be a challenge looking at the assembly instructions and decifering them. I think I understand it, but what I think and actually do are sometimes to different things. I do have the materials and if this does go together fast, I may make 2 bags just to do some stash busting too.

OK.. I'm in.
I talked to my husband yesterday and told him I really wanted to do this, but, didn't want to put aside the afghan that I am working on for his friend. He said. Put it aside!!
Woo Hoo. So that means I can join.
I am going to make the "Rainbow granny 'ghan" that is in the Sept/oct Crochet Today mag. Page 68. I have ordered my yarn (hopefully it will be here in time). I am using the Red Heart Designer sport that the pattern calls for. I have never used this yarn before so we shall see how it goes.
I am so excited!!!!
Oh. I should add that this will be a challenge for me because of the octogon motif's and the square motifs. I have never made a 'ghan with both motifs and joined them together. Should be fun.

Hi all! I'm ready to participate! My project will be an Annies Attic Halloween kit. :cheer I am totally unaccustomed to using such fine yarn/thread to crochet and the spider and web intimidated me. :eek I've had the kit for 4 years, afraid to start! :blush I bought it to make as gift for my sister who is into all things Halloween. Joining this Olympics will give me the push to do it.
