Trying to decide what challenge you want to accept? Trying to select a pattern or yarn? Having trouble making a gauge swatch? Or are you just trying to decide if you want to participate in the games at all?

This thread is for all discussion about the games as we refine our crochet skills in preparation for the main event.

When the games start, this thread will be closed and discussion will move to the Let the Games Begin! (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78220) thread.

I have a prelimary sketch done of my Ren Tunic, and I've actually started a couple of experiments with the "sideways' crochet cable...basically it's for the trim, so it will be worked in the traditional manner in one long strip (like for the hem) and then the body will be crocheted bottom to top...(think in terms of doing a ribbed piece for socks and then crocheting the rest of the sock on the side of the ribbing.)

I have a lot time to get this workable before the Games...I'm already excited...

This projects sounds fascinating! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

We have 3 participants already!

For those of you who are just thinking about participating, feel free to post in this thread even if you haven't officially signed up for the event yet.

I have all the supplies for three tea sets. I have had the supplies since January...see I ama procrastinator..DD says it is because I join too many swaps and commit to too many other things...like the dress for my niece that needs to be done before her Daddy get shome from Iraq in June, my DD's bathing suit which needs to be done sooner than that, she really wants her second cupcake top now. and I joined another Swap. She is gonna beat me but I am comitted to doing one tea set during the games

I know I want to do this, but have no idea yet what I want to do... I can do the double wedding ring ghan, scaled down the way I'm planning it.... I could make the Kitchen Sets I want to make for Christmas Gifts... I could Make a lapghan that I want as a Christmas Gift... I could learn to Filet Crochet and make the butterflies I want to make my dd for christmas... I could set a goal for snowflakes... I could make a couple baby blankets that I promised to donna for december.... way too many options, I'm going to have to think about it, and see what I've got a hankering for closer to actual start time... :sigh

What I would like to do for my medal in these games is to design and create a 16 piece Wedding and Trousseau ensemble for an 18 inch doll. This would be my own design so I wouldn't have a link or a name to submit other than "Darski's 16 piece Wedding and Trousseau ensemble for an 18 inch doll". :rofl

Would such a project be acceptable for these games? I will likely do some general planning ahead of time but I won't start a single stitch until the opening ceremonies begin... I don't do TV so could someone please post the info for me.

I kinda want to join but also don't know what to do. I could join Redheart and get a lapghan done during the 16 days. I'd love to join Cherri, but I maxed out on squares in March and October will be here before you know it, when we'll be doing FARA squares again. Then, there is the lovely rose and burgundy alpaca I bought last weekend that I could turn into my dream felted purse. I'll have to keep thinking.

Darski, absolutely! Links to patterns and stuff aren't required. We just ask for it if you have one, because you know how everybody likes to check out what everybody else is making or plans to make. :D

It sounds like you want to use training time for sketching ideas and stuff, but the actual pattern creation/design will take place during those 16 days? If so, you are one brave lady! :hook

We'll be sure to post the start time of the opening ceremonies as soon as either I find it online somewhere or somebody else tells me the official time has been posted. We'll also post an estimate of the time the flame will be extinguished as well.

I kinda want to join but also don't know what to do.

Just to reassure everyone, there is PLENTY of time to sign up. I'll set a cut-off date much later, closer to the actual start of the event.

If there are only a few last minute sign ups trickling in, then the cut-off can be pretty close to the start of the opening ceremonies. (To give me time to post them so that I can start my project---if I participate---at the beginning with everybody else.)

If there are lots of last minute sign ups trickling in, I may have to set the cut off for a day or two before the opening ceremonies.

But even so, that's not until August 6 or so, so you've got plenty of time to plan projects.

Don't think your commitment is etched in stone either. You can always let me know you'd like to switch to a different project, as long as you do so by whatever the cut-off date is.

No problem! Plus it will be much easier on me if people join semi-gradually over the next few months, instead of hundreds of people joining in the first day! :lol It would take me days and days to add all those people to the official list of athletes!!

Oh dear. I want to play, and August is plenty far ahead, but I'm supposed to start teaching a class at the university in mid-August, and you know how last minute class preparations go. But I didn't participate last time, although I followed it, and I remember what fun everyone had. Do I make the tulip window curtain for my kitchen (and maybe dining room, too), or the quilt-style afghan I've wanted for my bedroom? I don't know, I don't know! Can I finish in time, or will I be that last sprinter, barely making it back to the arena ? :scared Patty

I have a pattern for a vest that I can't remember if it is knitted or crocheted! The vest was given to me when I was 9 yrs old by my 4H leader that said she never could figure it out. Since I didn't know how to knit then, I am thinking it is crocheted.
IF I can figure out in which pile of patterns it is buried - I would like to take the challenge to make it.

OOhhh - I wanna do this. There's a few different techniques that I'm really interested in learning. I don't know which one I'll be up to then.

Dad's decided he wants the graph ghan. I'll be taking on an Aran/Cable solid ghan (probably my own pattern), I've always wanted to learn broomstick lace. I want to make a matching thread set for my living room (2 runners-coffee table & piano) & 2 doilies but I'll never get that done in 16 days.

What to do, what to do ... this is gonna be great!

Ooh. This could be fun. Still not sure what my schedule is like during August though, so I'm not sure if I am up for it. Hmmm... and then there is the question of what to make. I have been eying these socks (http://www.interweavecrochet.com/issue/2008/materials_spr08.asp#troubador) for a while. This might be the perfect time to try them out. They are a bit intimidating, but so beautiful. I'll have to think about this.

Hmmmm. :think I think I would like to join, but I'm not sure what I want to make yet. It may be an attempt to do Tunisian crochet (don't know what project) or I may try to make and design a top for me. I'll keep watching this thread to to see what others come up with.

This sounds like fun!! I'm definitely in and have been looking through my pattern stash and thinking I might do this teacup doily http://www.crochetmemories.com/patterns/teaparty.php I bought the pattern a while back and keep looking at it and putting it off. It even kinda goes along with the theme of these games in "China", lol, and I think it's a challenge for the time frame involved, but not impossible.

We're up to 16 athletes who have already decided on their projects! That's pretty impressive, with less than 24 hours of the sign-ups being open. :)

There are quite a few more who will be athletes as soon as they decide what they're going to make.

Please don't feel any pressure to select a project right away to get your name on the official list. Your name can go on at any time between now and a day or two before August 8. You've got plenty of time! And half the fun is talking in this training thread about all the projects you could choose from. :lol

LeahB I'm glad you mentioned the socks. That's exactly what I was thinking of doing but it didn't seem nearly so ambitious as other posts. I've never done socks and have always wanted to and thought this might be a great way to try it out. I have little experience with crocheted wearables, I thought it would be a good challenge to get the shape and fit right. Then I'd be set to fill my sock drawer up for cold weather after the games were over! After reading your post, I think I'll have to think more seriously about this!

I so want to participate but I ahve to pick a project and make sure I'm going to have the time, the time frame is right when I have to be setting up my classroom and planning for the year, well, maybe I'll just have to plan in July this year instead LOL.

I have sketched out an idea for a halter that I'd like to try and make, I even have yarn... I may have to do some guage swatches first though to see if it's even feasible. Time to go look at patterns

I am thinking I want to join. I'm getting married Sep. 3rd so I know I want to do something towards that but I can't decide what! I kind of want to make a big 3 tiered crocheted wedding cake or a lacy wrap or a bunch of flowers to help decorate the reception. So many choices!

It's a pretty low budget wedding so I figure bunches of crocheted flowers will be a perfect things to help make it a bit more fun. Also, it would just be more ME and these would be much more keepable later on afterwards for keepsakes. Hmmm.... I am really kind of sold on the idea but I don't know. I wonder if it would be too much kitsch to have them but on the other hand, I do so love fun things...

Either way, I just know I want to do something wedding-y.

I'm glad you like the idea of the socks. I figure for me they would be a challenge. I've made one pair of VERY basic socks, but never done anything nearly this fancy, and of course, at the time I made the other socks, those were a challenge for me too! For these ones, I think all the changing back and forth between colors in that pattern alone would be a challenge for me! I know that at some point I will make them, the question is just when. I'm trying to decide if this (meaning August) is the right moment.

You can always sign up now and ask to have your name removed from the participant list later if you realize you won't be able to participate.

I can't believe we have 26 people who have selected their projects already. :)

For those of you who have blogs, you're welcome to use the event button on your blog even if you haven't selected project and become an "official" athlete yet. Don't forget to let your real-life crocheting friends know about the event, too. I think it would be great if we could reach people who aren't part of Crochetville yet and get them to participate along with us.

I have to say congrats first. Now Crochet is not too kitsch for a wedding. My wedding was very low budget...read less than $4,000 including dresses for me and my daughter and step daughter. I made everything myself. Bouquets were silk flowers, boutinniers and corsages silk flowers, cake from shop n save very yummy no waste centerpieces...crocheted doilies with roses around the edgeswith small vases the round ones that look like fishbowls with ruffled tops, filled with colored marbles and more crocheted roses. favors were candy wrapped in lace with more crocheted roses and a computer printed tag with our name and wedding date and then chocolate rose lollipops with more crocheted roses and the same tag. everyone loved them my Grandmothe still has her centerpiece on her hutch I even decorated walmart goblets with crocheted roses.

Yesterday I made a big booboo by posting this in the wrong thread. I made more work for Amy who is already so busy doing such wonderful things for all of us at crochetville.
SORRY.
Now to the crochet olympics. I have had tis table top pattern in a a real old book I have. It is all done in sc and picots. Small motifs are joined as you work to make a big tabletop. I think I want to do that. But right now I am very busy and in June I have taken an offer to teach in a school for two months.I will also be teaching yoga to school kids everyday from June to April 2009.
Oh what am I saying? All this and to start something that I have been putting off for many many years. But I am going to try that one small motif today and then decide if I can join in or not.
But following this thread is going to be a lot of fun.

I remember when Calgary had the winter games, they tried to close a restaurant that had been there for 100 years that was named the Olympia Restaurant. You really have to wonder about stuff like this eh?

I agree with your last statement too. This is going to be fun.

I would also like to do this, but have no idea of what to do. I've never made a lapghan before nor tried to attach squares. That's a possibility!

Sore

A lapghan does not have to be squares! you can make it out of any pattern you like they just measure 36" X 48" plus a border :manyheart

We are now up to 33 official participants, with quite a few more who just haven't selected their challenge yet.

We've also had several offers of prize donations, too. We'll get those added to the Sponsor list just as soon as we've received the donations.

I can't decide if I want to do The Victorian Lace Afghan (http://www.knitting-crochet.com/crochet/viclac.html) or Darski's "Lo How a Rose Ere Blooming" outfit for my DD. Another option I have would be to use up some of the cotton yarn I bought along with the sherbet print RH I just got and make a Floral afghan of a yet to be determined design.

Decisions decisions! :think

Hey !
I'm so glad that so many people are getting involved in the Crochet Games! :cheer Amy is a complete saint to organise all this! :angel

Onto pre-Game Training :I have a bit of a problem. I still don't know whether to do my filet in Thread or in sport weight so it's a throw.

I've been tweaking the design - I was doing a course yesterday and while I had my laptop plugged into the projector, I put the chart up so it was actual size for both #10 thread and then sport weight:yarn.

:eek 210cm square if sport weight......

But I'm happy with the design now, I just have to learn how to do a lacet stitch ( :think ). And decide whether 50/50 Alpaca /Merino sport weight in cream or #10 in ecru would be best....

I share the problem of having a hard time thinking all the way ahead to August for planning a project :). I am thinking though of trying a filet project - I'd like to do something like the filet "Herald Angel" wallhanging someone posted recently on Show and Tell.

The challenges there would be 1) I have not (as yet) ever done filet, 2) I do not have the pattern and am not sure I could locate it, so might have to chart it myself, 3) perhaps the size...

Or I could catch up on all the snowflakes from the Snowflake Monday CAL, I'm sure I'll be up to at least one per day by then :lol.

Decisions, decisions... :)

I'm still thinking too, about what I'd like to do for this. I have a craft fair in October that I could be getting ready for, but I'd really rather do something for charity. I'm thinking it will either be little items (like I.V. covers (http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/iv-wrist-cover.html)) or a couple of lapghans. I really like (and have made several) this pattern (http://iamtotallyobsessedwithyarn.blogspot.com/2006/01/granny-square-pattern-with-pictures.html)for lapghans. To make a lapghan sized one, it only takes about 4-5 skeins of yarn, and I make them for the local DHR (for foster care kids) center here in town. Anyway... More thinking to do... :think

Based on the challenges our athletes have selected so far, here are some suggested team designations:

Team Afghans (11 so far)

Team Baby (1 so far)

Team Dolls/Toys/Ami (2 so far)

Team FA Awareness (1 so far)

Team Home Decor (7 so far)

Team Sissie44's Seniors (6 so far)

Team Wearables (7 so far)

Other team ideas:

Team Eclectic (any category with only 1 participant can be moved here; members of any team with just a small number of members can also ask to be moved here)

???????

If you haven't signed up yet, but you think you're going to end up picking a project that doesn't fit into any of these categories, please respond to this thread with your suggestion for a team name.

I don't want to sign up anyone for a team if they would rather just be an individual participant in the games. For those of you who are already listed in our list of official athletes (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78221), please post in this thread to let me know if you'd prefer to be an individual competitor or have me assign you to a team.

Remember, there won't be any official team competitions or anything. The teams are just for fun. You can talk with your teammates and develop a team cheer, your own special team button (or use the one Donna will create), and just generally encourage and support each other as you make items of a similar nature.

Don't forget, official athletes: post and let me know whether you want to compete as an individual or part of a team.

I think I may join in but I'm not sure if I'll have time because I may actually be going to Beijing for the Olympics... My aunt and uncle there bought tickets for me to go to the opening ceremony and some of the swimming events. I haven't bought my plane ticket yet and school starts during the Olympics so I might not go.

Anyways, if I do join in for these games I'll be crocheting a pair of socks because I've had a lovely skein of Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn for a while now, I've just been afraid to take on socks. Hopefully I won't get 2nd sock syndrome... :hook

Well, if you don't go, will you send your tickets to me? :lol

Here's how to get rid of 2nd sock syndrome: if you have access to a scale that measures in grams, divide your yarn into two skeins. Get two hooks and work on both socks at the same time. Get the first sock to a certain point (like ribbing at the top), then get the second sock to the same point. Keep going like that for each separate part of the sock: cuff, leg, heel, turning the heel, foot, closing the toe.

I only knit socks, but I find it much easier to get through a pair of socks by using this method! Otherwise, I get bored once I've finished the first sock and want to move on to a different pattern.

I have a question - at what point does training stop being training and become cheating? In my case I will be using a square designed by cupcake ( she very generously gave me the pattern to use for charity ). Now, I can't make any estimates unless I make a complete square, and if this test square turns out well, I might use it in the actual blanket - is this training, or is it cheating?

RoseRed
May 20th, 2008, 04:03 PM
Practicing and learning the stitches are part of training. I'll probably be making a ghan with pattern notes and such for my Dad in beige/brown and make my mistakes and learn from that one before I start on my purple one. The purple one and the fully written pattern is my challenge. I've never done any of these stitches before. Is that practicing or cheating? I think it's practice.

darski
May 20th, 2008, 04:12 PM
I found the pattern stitch I want for my wedding gown but I have to do a test run (bridesmaid's dress?? :wlol ) to see if I can make the stitch work for a dress. I figure the gown is going to take me about 10 days of the 16 days so I need to know how to make it work before I start the real thing... that is practice for me. I sure don't think it is cheating.

marikamum
May 20th, 2008, 06:34 PM

Why don't you make a couple of the motifs and see how long they take you - then you can gauge whether a baby blanket is possible.

That spiral motif could go like crazy if you just get 'in the zone' with it. I have been tempted to try that one as something to do at Wed.'s sewing circle meetings.

On the upside, I just made a 10 piece ensemble for my 18" girls from Saturday to Monday and now I am writing up the pattern... now that could take 10 days right there. But it means that I can get lots of off pieces made while struggling with the gown.

I am planning to use a baby weight yarn and therein lies the challenge. My hands may never forgive me. :wlol

I am torn between the designers team and the filet team. Guess I could join both.

Maria has given me the graph for my wording, now I just have to choose a border. I like the "people" and another one I found that is crosses. I may design a hybrid that uses both.

The next challenge for me will be to make some swatches so I can estimate my time to complete.

I have one question. What are the dates/days for the games? Is there one or two weekends? How many week days? I know I can work on this an average of 2 hours per week day and about 6 hours on the weekend days. I want to make sure its a challenge without being a nightmare!!!

I'm copying and pasting from my post in the Join the Games thread:

My project will be an original design of a Ren style tunic sweater top.

Why it's a challenge: Mainly use of crochet cables for hem and neckline and sleeve insertion and trim where the cables are sideways, but also for the type of fitting and shaping I will be going for.

Not only is this project a challenge from a crochet standpoint, but from writing the pattern standpoint.

I hope when the flame is extinquished in Beijin, that not only will this garment be completed and ready for me to wear, but that the pattern itself will be written and typed in final draft form and either posted to a site like this, or submitted for publication with a magazine, book or calendar.

True about typing over writing...but even typing up a pattern for me can be a drill, inspite of the fact that I'm a fast typist!

The games start on August 8, a Friday, and end on August 24, a Sunday. So there are nearly 3 full weekends in there. I'm not sure exactly how much of our "waking time" we'll have on the weekends here in the US, since we're timing this from the start of the opening ceremonies until the flame is extinguished. I can't believe I'm even thinking about this but I have been wanting to write my own patterns for years. It would be a challenge because I've only written down one very small pattern with just a few rows & that was recently, to get warmed up (even though I didn't know what I was getting warmed up for LOL). During the games, I would make "something" of my own original design and also write a pattern for it. I'll have to think about what to make that isn't too complicated but not too easy either.

Well, if those of you who have written patterns before don't mind a beginner aboard your team, I'd be happy to join you while I try to learn to write a pattern out in 2 weeks :eek And I have to crochet it at least once as well lol...I will probably end up frogging quite a bit in the beginning. :yes

I'll try & spend my training time reading about writing patterns, as well as checking out stitches & of course deciding what I am going to make LOL I will officially sign up once I decide what that will be.

I don't know what the actual times are in China (not even sure if it's been published yet), so I don't know how that will translate to anyone's local time.

From http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_time_does_the_Beijing_Olympics_start

As you mentioned, the Olympics begin on August 8, or 08/08/08. The cermonies will officially start at eight seconds after 8:08 pm Beijing time...or 8:08:08 pm on 08/08/08.

I'm in the Eastern Time Zone, and Bejing is exactly 12 hours ahead of us. So for me, the Olympics begin at 8:08:08 am on 08/08/08.

For those in the Central Time Zone, it would be 7:08:08 am; Mountain Time Zone, 6:08:08 am and Pacific Time Zone, 5:08:08 am.

There is no official word on what time the closing cermonies begin...however I'm assuming it will be sometime Sunday morning August 24, Eastern Time.

Here's a question for Amy:

How many teams can we join? It seems that for some of us what we're doing can fall into a couple different catagories.

I really do hope you do a Team Original Design. I think it would be awesome for those that don't have a lot of practice at it and for those that do.

Kazily - you could try making something and writing out the pattern and finding your own style of writing before the games start. This way you already know your format and technicals of it. Just an idea.

******** YAY!!! Smileyface is gonna join us for the games! I just love her. She's a sweetheart!

We cannot set a stitch until the opening ceremonies... whatever time that may be in your timezone.

We can test and swatch and see if the yarn is going to drive us round the bend until then.

I don't know the answer to the number of teams. I don't think I would have time to chat in two groups and get my Event completed :rofl

I plan to take short "ville" breaks during the games to catch up and post photos. Pacing myself is going to be important. I wouldn't want to lose interest, lose hope, or lose my mind!!! LOL

If you subscribe to threads, it makes it easier to keep up with them. Not really much more than keeping up with email.

I would like to join but I'm not sure what I want to make. I ahve a friend that's pregnant and I was thinking of making her a blanket. She's already asked if I would make her the big bad baby blanket in stich ' bitch but it's knit so that's out. I might start that before then anyway. I am considering joining this. My life should be quiet by then and I want to make my DD a Boboletta for Christmas. I've only ever made one wearable before and nothing like this pattern. The pattern and the yarn are already bought. Maybe I'll do that. Need to think on it a little longer though!

Thanks for the idea RoseRed. Doing a "trial run" on another small project would be a great way to learn what to do when I actually begin the games. :yes Like maybe writing a little pattern as I crochet something & then crocheting it again (from the pattern) to see if I can understand myself lol

I am thinking of doing a handbag. I love handbags. Crochet toys (Ami) is not really my thing much) & it will still be a little too warm for a scarf here. A wearable would be too challenging & set me up to fail. So I think a bag it will be...not a teeny bag & not a tote...somewhere in between & something with original personality. Thinking caps on & I plan to NOT look at any more bag patterns for the duration (I'm addicted so that's a challenge in itself lol) but I don't want to be influenced. Maybe I can feed my addiction by perusing bag sites that are not crochet, to get a little inspiration.

I've been doing some thinking and calculations and WOW! I have a major problem with this aran ghan. It's supposed to be all sc! I didn't realize that it's going to take almost 230 rows to make 6 feet!

I have no idea if there's a way to make all of these stitches in dc! If there's not I'll just have to figure it out and do it anyways! I hate sc! Makes my hands hurt! Wish me luck! I'm really gonna need it!

Rosered,
I made an all sc full size afghan for my best friend's daughter last fall. I started in August, mailed it to her around Thanksgiving and finished it right after Christmas when we visited them (I had to enlarge the border). Mine was rectangles of different colors, joined together in a "tile floor" pattern to match her wall. It was definitely a work of love. I KNOW you can do it!

(Wow - looking at that ghan brings back memories. I did that in a week! We were waiting to get her into the pediatric cancer doctor. We thought it was lymphoma. Thank God it wasn't anything serious. In the 2 weeks I had to wait to get her into the specialist I thought I'd lose my mind. After a week of stuffing cookies down my throat I picked up my hook and whipped it out for my baby girl.) That was 5 years ago.

I expect to do them all in a rather random fashion, I will just make whatever I can at the time while doing parts of the gown.

Oh Sweetie, I totally understand needing a break and letting our hands rest. I'm using the Greek Games as a 2 week 'I am making something for ME!' time. I do hope you change your mind. If not - I hope you hang out on the boards and cheer us on at least.

Learning how to say NO! is not the easiest thing in the world. It gets easier with practice. A lot of people just don't understand the amount of work that goes into these things.

I'll ask people - "Would you like me to add it to the end of my list?" and rattle off my list of whips at them.

and the answer is NO! you're not the crochet factory. You shouldn't be made to feel like this is a chore.

This sounds like so much fun. I'd like to participate, but the big question is doing WHAT.
(1) I have two patterns that I came up with months ago for afghan quilts that are still undone. Both would be just barely doable in the time allotted I think. The challenge here is getting them done in the time allowed. The first is 1/3 bi-color squares and the second is 2/3 bi-color squares, making the second a lot harder than the the first.http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p280/busy-bee-lmt/DCP_1203.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p280/busy-bee-lmt/DCP_1139.jpg
(2) I have the yarn and pattern for a poncho to make for myself. Again the challenge is getting it done in the time allowed.
(3) A filet crochet design. Pattern not yet found. The challenge here is two fold. Getting it done in time. And I like the look of filet crochet but have a horrible time completing them as I get bored with the stitch very quickly. I think I've only finished one in all the time I've been crocheting (close to 50 years).

Not really. I've looked at a lot of patterns on line. None of them have had the "I have to have/make this" feel though. I need to look at my grandmothers patterns too as I know there are some great patterns in those booklets from the 1940s and 1950s.

Hi everyone,

I have decided to join the games and hopefully will be in Team Afghans.
Here are 2 cuddle ghans that I designed, each square is a 2 row granny square that we call a saltine. Im leaning towards doing the Koala which has 360 squares which means making at least 22 each day and then I would have to get them all sewn together.

Im going to try my best and just to be part of the games here and watch the olympics on tv is going to be so exciting.:yay

I think for my "training" I will have to work on booties and hats, since i've never made booties, and only hats for older kids and adults, and also perhaps if I have time to also make a sweater and blanket so that 1) I'll know how long it will take me, and thus how much time I need to make sure to set aside, and 2) I'll then at the end also have two complete sets to....umm...do something with. They'll probably get added to my "baby box" with the last baby blanket, sweater, and couple of unfinished BICOs. ( I hate putting things together, so my BICOs are just one big flat piece, all that's left on them is to sew the seams and then edge them)

Well I did do my test drives on how to make the hat/headpiece and for the neck of the gown.

I am trying not to do too much because part of my challenge is to do the designing during the games. if. I "practice" everything now, there won't be any challenge in August.

However I continue to design items and I consider which ways would work for my final trousseau.

I agree about all the parts going round and round in my head. :loco There are so many options and I will have to pare it down soon.

Not sure if it really counts, but I do have several baby sweaters lying around that could be considered practice, as I try to find a pattern I really like that is also fairly easy...not because I'm not up to the challenge of a more difficult pattern, but because my schedule isn't. I've also been playing with blanket ideas....I do need to try booties and baby size hats between now and then though...maybe for my practice tries I'll make the other parts of sets I didn't really intend to be sets, but I do have a blanket and a sweater that don't match each other but could use some company...hmmm...off to the yarn store.

I have been swatching some. I just don't like the look of it. I am using #10 thread, and have tried all my hooks from 4 to 7. I have shown one or two to another "ville"er, and she says when it is blocked, it will look better.

I also need to graph my border around my main piece. Any suggestions? The main design is 50 x 80 squares, so the border will be 70 x 100. I am thinking of printing my own graph paper, cutting it to fit, then "drawing" the design in and finally making one copy. I will probably need to reduce it, or make a two page graph.

I am thinking about trying #20 or #30 thread just to see what it looks like. My husband is even filling up my mp3 player with "training" music LOL.

1. Order book (done)
2. Buy yarn for footballs
3. Make one football to test pattern, speed, gauge
4. Give it to hubby to test end weave in time
5. Decide if challenge is feasible
6. If feasible trash talk to hubby that I will get a better medal than him!
7. Wait for games to begin

charity, This pattern is great because it is versatile with color choices. In my humble opinion, it looks wonderful in off white, green, red, blue, pink or purple. I would go for several color combinations for extra bonus as a challenge. :)

I am so tempted by the crocheted socks in Interweave Crochet spring 2008 that someone posted earlier. I might join in if I ever get the issue. :blush I did a crocheted sock but never finish it. So it will be a challenge for me to finish up a pair of socks, not only color changing part.

I am still undecided on a project. I have some original designs that I don't test yet. Unfortunately, they are too time consuming, knitting-based or huge projects. Tomorrow, I might check out some LYSs and see if there are any inspirations. I already surf some Internet sites, but nothing strike me like a challenge for the crochet game. :think

I don't mind doing the UFOs you can finish in time idea. It will push me harder to finish some WIPs. I really have serious completion issues...

Depending on your plans for the finished afghan - that is a beautiful square - I think it would become an instant classic if you did it in all white.

It might also be nice worked in a monochromatic arrangement in an "Around The World" placement.

I can't imagine any colour - well except maybe a flat black - that would not be a good choice for that pattern.

I saw this (http://heidiwalsh.pbwiki.com/Chilli+Shawl+Cardigan) this morning and when I read your notes above it was the first thing to come to mind

If you are looking for inspiration, I find that a quick look every Saturday at what Rachel has found 'this week" (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/new_patterns.php)to be very inspirational

I'd like to try this - is it too late to join? I have projects in mind that I've wanted to do for a long time, but I always put the pattern aside to work on something else.

Darski - Thank you for sharing those links! I really like the first link. Something new for me as I am not really familiar with UK/US terminology.

5.00 hook size means H in US or I in UK ? :think

I don't read the symbol charts that often either. It should be fun to do this one. :D

I will keep that in mind when I head out to LYSs to see if I can get the Interweave Crochet spring 2008 issue. :yes

Thank you again.

Now I'm doing a smaller graph - US Navy with the Anchor. There is no way I will even attempt to make a ghan in sc! My hands are killing me! As soon as I finish this up I'll be getting started on my practice piece.

I think any color would look good. If it was for me, I'd choose my favorite color and go with that.

I've narrowed down my options to two, I think. I'm having some health issues at the moment that may yet change my mind on which to do.

If you're not sure whom you're going to give it to, I'd go with something neutral. Maybe an off-white or beige...it could make a beautiful gift for someone.

I got interweave crochet spring issue today. Tapestry socks look cool. It means that I will have to learn tapestry crochet technique, sock structure - crochet style, and color changing. I guess I will make a tapestry crochet swatch along with two colors in it. Then crochet a pair of simple socks.

If I feel it's too much, I do have a wearable in mind which do use symbol chart. I will post when I make a final decision on the pattern. :yes

So, has anyone actually been practicing? I'm trying to get a couple Father's Day things finished and working on my 'spare time' doily (which is almost done).

I haven't actually started swatches yet BUT it's all still going round and round in my head.

My Plan is to make sure I can get gauge for my shawler this weekend. Then make sure I have enough of the yrn I need and double check the pattern.

Of course, Friday I start the bottom up pineapple shawl class and I am working on the double wedding ring quiltghan for me and then I have the 2 or more felted purse organizers I need to get done as well.

I decide not to try anything on the socks until I am done with July 4th stuff. So I can try things without any distractions. I will check if I can get good yarn for two patterns this month. That way, I will be more sure of which project to use for crochet game. Less temptations, less torture for me. :hook

Thanks so much for the help with the fingerless gloves! I did find a pair on CPC. WAHOO! Now to pick a yarn out of my stash...I'm not sure what kind of yarn would be best. I've never made them before. I'm excited though!

I just discovered that popcorns are NOT my most fav thing to crochet. ugh! This is gonna be a LONG balnket to make.

Yes!!! I've got the pattern stitch down for the center panel!!! YAY!!! Hey - I'm really excited about this here. lolol.

Now I get to make all the rest the panels, see how the different sizes and stitches line up (especially with the different sizes of the pattern repeats) and try to come up with a row count that'll work.

The more I think about it, the more I think I'll be doing a couple of pairs of fingerless mittens instead of just one. If this pattern works out (and if not I'll find another) I'll make a pair for my sister who turned 11 this year, and a couple of pairs for my 9 and 6 year old nephews who this week moved to Maryland for my brother to work in D.C. (he's an Air Force Lieutenant Colonel). I know they don't have anything in terms of cold weather clothes so this would be perfect.

I have some wristlets that I made to compensate for short gloves I had and they are wonderful. I have thin gloves so I can use the fingers for finer stuff like picking up change but Very warm wristlets so I have the best of both worlds.

I really can see why they are becoming so popular. Did you happen to see the new pattern posted at CPC this week?

I'm trying to decide between two bunting patterns. One is from an old Crochet Today! magazine that buttons up the front. The second is a vintage pattern I found earlier today. I like everything but the hood. It's too pointy for me! lol! (I thought I could link it, but I can't...darn it!)

darski
June 24th, 2008, 10:50 PM
You should be able to adapt the pattern with the pointy hood. I find that a few decreases in that area will round it nicely.

I have a question for Darski: On your Dora patterns (I'm thinking about making your "Lo, How a Rose Ere Blooming" for the Games), do you use WW yarn? I have some great shades of cotton y
