Did you find it difficult at all? How long did it take? (I have lots of questions)
What stitches did you use?
Is it possible to see a close-up?

Well,Boucle is a shy yarn, and doesn't do well with close-ups...I tried to get a pic of the stitches and such but I just couldn't get it to show. I did the granite stitch for the body and sleeves, and for the edging I just did one row of 2dc's in ea st and then a row of v-st.
Difficult...well, this was my first time doing anything without a true written out pattern. It isn't perfect.
Doing it again I will make the starting chain longer, I will decrease towards the top where the arms go because I don't like how it fits under my arms, and I will make the sleeves wider. But I love it because I worked hard on it. I don't think it is really difficult, and after seeing how well you did with the pink shrug schematics you will be fine with this.
It took longer than it should because I have 3 kids and they don't let me work for long at something other than them, and because I lost motivation for a while. I can't really remember when I started on it. I want to say it took me a week and a half, maybe 2. But I didn't work on it everyday, or for long periods of time when I did pick it up.
Hope this helps!

It's simple :)

And as for the joining of this project, Patty, it was really easy. The only thing hard about this is getting the size right as the original pattern is really small.

very nifty! I was especially excited to see your post this afternoon because my version of the same original (in brownish homespun) is 80-90% done, just gotta put a few more inches around the edges/collar and decide about buttons/clip options. I've already frogged it once back to nearly the beginning, so I've been dragging a bit on the last mile, but seeing how nicely yours came out will put a little verve in my hook this evening ;-) Also good to know I'm not the only one suddenly overcome with the desire to make a sweater it won't be cold enough to wear outside for another 4 months. thanks for sharing!

Like so many of you, I too was inspired to start this jacket from that Craftster thread. I feel for you, vrya- I was up to the sleeves last night when I realized I needed to frog the whole thing!

Okay, Jessi, my mom the incredible sewing maching is coming out in 2 weeks, and I thought maybe I could get started on this with her. She's never made these kinds of things with hook or needles, but she can whip up a dress without a pattern, so she's very good at visualizing and understanding things I hadn't even thought of re: patterns. So, my questions for you now are: 1) how much did you increase the starting length (I'm a size 8/10); 2) how much of that boucle did you use?; 3) is this really all one piece? I guess I'm confused how you do both sleeves by increasing with ch 10 (or whatever you determine you need).

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. Yours is so gorgeous I must have it, and I won't be able to have Mom around to help for another year when I go visit her, so I need to take advantage of her trip out here (while i'm taking advantage of your kindness here).

Thanks!! Patty

OOH! You gals are driving me CRAZY with all these beautiful jackets and shrugs!

This is simply stunning, Jessi - wonderful job! And wouldn't you know it, I have a very large stash of Bernat Boucle, went a little nuts when my Hobby Lobby had it on sale for $2.22 a skein a few months back...

Oh, and I have some other yarn coming that might be even better for this pattern! I just have to hurry up and finish my Serphina, and then take care of a couple of other things. :hook

So, my questions for you now are: 1) how much did you increase the starting length (I'm a size 8/10); 2) how much of that boucle did you use?; 3) is this really all one piece? I guess I'm confused how you do both sleeves by increasing with ch 10 (or whatever you determine you need).
Thanks!! Patty

Patty,
1)Well that starting ch calls for it to be 24" long.....I made mine 26" long...and I still wish I had made it a bit bigger. I am a size 3/4.
2) I used about 2 1/2 balls of boucle (5 oz each)
3) Yes, it is all one piece. Make sure that you check out the posts on the thread at crafster. She drew a diagram (i think on page 2) that helps understand how she changed it. And towards the end, maybe page 4, someone posted how they determine to get the right size for clothes. The sleeves still kind of confuse me and I am not quite sure that I did it right. It is hard to tell with the boucle. I am going to work another one up in Simply Soft so I can at least wear that one sometimes during the summer, in a more open pattern. I plan on writing down exactly what I do and how many chains I use and such, so that way maybe I can be of more help.
It is rather hard to tell if it will fit right while you are making it of course. I am not really satisfied with how it fit around my shoulders/under my arms...so I will be working on that also. That makes me think I might have messed up on the sleeves, so I'm not sure I want to give advice on that part just yet. I have a feeling this one will take me a bit longer writing everything down and such.
If you start making it and need something, feel free to pm me, I will try and help as best as I can:)

Well:cheer , I think I made mine too skinny...lol. I am going to work on another one and try to fix the kinks that came with this being my first time trying something without a full written pattern. I think I messed up on the first part of the sleeves or something. Good luck!!!

Thanks, Jessi. I've already printed out craftster's diagram, but I still don't get the sleeve thing. I'll just have to start crocheting it and see what happens.

My office is so cold thanks to my coworkers that I wear more clothes in summer than in winter! :lol So this lovely jacket will be perfect. It's going to be my birthday present to me!

Thank you much! I included a link above the picture on the first page to where I got the schematics from. I didn't write anything down, I just followed the drawing (on page 2 of the thread there) and how she did hers. I just changed the edging to something simple because I used boucle and that doesn't show details. :)

yeah, this was my first patternless thing too. well, first more or less successful non-rectangular patternless thing anyway. Midway through I started another sweater with a pattern, and man, it is so relaxing to be told exactly what to do! I'm looking forward to your notes, as I too hope to redo this in a less anguish-inducing yarn and whatever ideas I can pick up along the way. You did an AWESOME job on this, and I absolutely LOVE the colors! Wow!

Let me say that again: WOW! :manyheart:manyheart:manyheart

I will say, I'm in awe that you tackled this project using Homespun with a K hook, too. Homespun is much easier to work with using no less than an M, N is best in my experience. Working it on a K hook can be a MAJOR headache - I know, after making a capelet using the K hook and a lot of words that are not fit to print! :devil

I'm following the reports and pics all of you gals who have tackled this pattern have shared, as I am planning this to be my next "me" project to make. Hope I can do as well! :hook

oh, there were words, believe me! This was my first time using homespun, so I just went with what the label suggested (and K is the largest hook I own anyway). I'm glad that I did because I think it gave me a nice firm fabric without a lot of gappiness to it which worked well with the style of this particular garment, but I'm not anxious to run out and try it again anytime soon. Gonna stick to nice, tame, docile non-nobby yarns and threads for a while, methinks!

VRYA, your version is gorgeous! I love the color! It's so rich and multi-dimensional. I've printed out your notes so that Mom and I can pore over them and figure out what to do. I spoke with her over the weekend and she said "You don't remember all the clothes I crocheted? I just gave your niece the cape I made your sister." So with her eye and help, plus everyone's here, I may be able to make this after all! Patty

thanks! I needed to replace a dark brown sweater whose loss last spring has left a gaping hole in my warddrobe, and that was the closest I could find at Wal-mart. Since I'm such a big fan of orange and beige, I was instantly attracted to this particular homespun color blend...

Cool. I hope they help! And I'd love to see your notes when you're done, as I very much feel like I just kinda winged it and got more or less lucky rather than actually knowing what I was doing, at least with regards to how and where to do increases as I was working the body...
