this is the stitch used
http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/crochet/flower_st.shtml (http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/crochet/flower_st.shtml)
*** but i did groups of 2 dtr's to make petals instead of groups of 3 as the pattern dictates in order to get a more airy, holey effect

the yarn i used was Lion Brand Microspun in white, about 3.5 skeins (i'm a size 4/6)

this shrug is made from cuff to cuff.

measure the distance from wrist to wrist (or if you want 3/4 sleeves instead of full, measure that distance). make a foundation chain that long, keeping in mind that the stitch requires multiples of 6.

keep crocheting until the fabric is about twice as long as the circumference of your bicep. you have to try it on as you make it and play around with it to see how loose you want it.

once the fabric is the right length, fold the fabric in half length wise and sew it together on both ends to create sleeves (as long as you want).

in order to pinch the sleeves in as i did and create a small cuff:
- measure the circumference of the part of the arm where the sleeve will stop and figure out how many stitches that will be.
- do 3 rows of hdc at the end of the sleeve for with that amount of stitches

i also did 2 rows of hdc around the body of the shrug to create a border

i know this was a sketchy description, so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask :hook

Love it :cheer but wondering can I make it wider in the front? I'm AU size 14, would like to wrap it a bit over big bits in front! Can you help?
Jessica.

there is a way to do that, but it won't look exactly like mine then; it'll be fitted (more or less) in the back and the front part that will cover the front won't be the same stitch (it's kinda a complicated stitch so i'm not sure how to do the increases required with it...maybe someone else can brainstorm that one)

what you should do is just keep working around the perimeter of the sweater for as many rows as it takes, and keep increasing every few rows. look at the other shrug patterns that have been posted to get some ideas for the stitches you might use for this as well as the exact increasing instructions

Great job! Is the fullness in the sleeve because you the seam isn't very long from the cuff? Most of the long sleeved shrugs have more fitted sleeves, which I like, but am thinking your version would be good for older people who might have a little trouble getting in and out of regular sleeves....

yes, the seem is very short because i wanted it to have a drapey effect, so it would look like a shawl from the back. as for the ease of putting it on, it wasn't one of my considerations in making it but i guess now that you mention it, it is pretty comfy to put on :D

Thanks for confirming this. Am planning on making a few things for retirement/convalescent homes (i.e., old folks' homes) and someone I know who was knitting a shawl for her mother told me they seem to have plenty of lap robes but not much to cover their shoulders and backs. Decided to crochet some shawls and capelets, and your "loose" shrug idea will be a nice addition to the mix.
