This could be off topic I'm afraid - I'm not sure if this is crocheted or not! I've been asked if I know about this pattern and I can't find any information about it, but I'm hoping some of you will remember this and/or be able to help!
"Looking for a pattern that was very popular back in the early 60's. It was a dog lying flat on its tummy, and it was made from long strands of yarn. I remember that every home I was invited to had at least 2 or 3 of these dogs, either lying on the bed or on top of the dresser, and even seen some of them in the back window of their cars. I recall that when it was completed it looked very similar to a Maltese dog or by changing the color yarn from white to silver, black or rust color yarn, it could look like a Yorkshire Terrier or a Silky Terrier."
Does this ring any bells for anyone? Hope you can help!
UPDATE: the pattern has been identified! Thanks to all who helped :)

I don't remember yarn dogs....but you made me think of those yarn octopi that were popular in the '60's, they would sit on the bed, their legs were braided yarn and the head was a yarn-covered styrofoam ball...anyway, I digress :lol...I found these, is this what you were thinking of?

Yesssss! Now that you've mentioned them, I remember them well. And now I WANT one!!! The one on ebay is close. Not exactly as I remember, but it might do if the absolutely right one can't be found. Hope we both get lucky.

I remember the ones that looked like poodles. I think they held toilet paper or something. I was little when these were popular and completely forgot all about them! Isn't it funny how something can jog a memory? :lol

The directions for these dogs is in a Red Heart booklet...you know the small patterns books on racks in the yarn section? The dogs are made from a skein of yarn cut down the center (from the middle) open the skein carefully, straighten the yarn with your fingers, and tie head, legs, and tail. Is that the one?

Thank you, ladies! You never fail to amaze me - I ask a question, and somebody always has the answer for me within a few hours! I'll let you know when I find out if any of your suggestions are THE dog in question :)

This is the pattern I have, too.
I've never tried to make it, though. I'm afraid I'll ruin a whole skein of yarn!
But you know....it might be a good way to reduce my stash! :lol

did you look at the coats and clarks web site under craft patterns??
The ones I remember were not crocheted and I think they had a foam base

Just wanted to thank everyone who helped track this down - apparently the link to ebay and the link to sewfunpatterns were both the exact pattern in question :)

My dd and I made one of these a few years ago. We found our pattern at Walmart like a previous poster said. I was trying to find it and give you the booklet number but it is buried deeper than I thought. I'll keep looking. I'm pretty sure there was a crocheted elephant pattern in the booklet also, maybe even on the cover.

here is a picture of the booklet.

but it doesn't seem like it is for sale on the website.
I'll keep looking for my copy though.
good luck!!
