That made me laugh, because my husband probably would have tried if I let him smoke in the house. Thanks for the pattern and tip!

I really love this idea:clap I want to make one for the bedroom. How much yarn did it take to make the size of the one in the picture:think . Can you purchase the type needed at Walmart and/or Hobby Lobby?

I used aprx 1- 1 1/2 ounce of each color. I do not know where to get the kind of yarn I used (Rug Crafter's Rug Yarn)as it was in an ebay lot with a bunch of other types but I am pretty sure that you could subsitute Aunt Lydia's Rug Yarn or ANY 100% polyester rug yarn. This yarn is thick and stiff feeling.
You can get (according to Caron's website) Aunt Lydia's at Hobby Lobby and Joann's to name a couple.
Hubby has requested I use the same concept and make a trash can for the van, so that will be the next project once he gets home so I can have a look to see where would be a good place and what shape/size/how to attach etc.

I'm going to make one for the side of the couch I crochet on. I usually just toss my cuttings on the floor until I'm ready to get up and throw them away:blush so this will be a little tidier.

That's very cool, Kari! I have some rug yarn I bought off ebay last year that I didn't know what to do with. Now I can make a waste basket to match the nursery set I'm planning! :manyheart

Well, now I know what to make DH for his birthday!
... and! That looks like it would be great as a gift basket for my handcrafted soaps!!!!!!
I have some rug yarn (old, I'm guessing - it was in a lot from Goodwill!)
But, it'll be fun to try out!
THanks for sharing

I have seen them in small skeins (?) at Joanns. I think they might be an oz or 2. At my Joanns they are in the isle that has the little bundles of thread (the kind that braclets are made from) and the plastic canvas.
I'm thinking that this is the perfect sofa side trashcan for all my snippets and the like. Thanks for the pattern!

That is really neat. I was thinking that a plastic insert would expand the possibilities. Thank you for sharing the pattern and the idea. Good one!!!!

Neat idea!
I couldn't help but comment...my parents each have their own nightstand trash can. While having a Saturday morning cup of coffee at my parents house...my father came out with an empty bottle of perfume in his hand. He glanced at her...then she smiled really big....she looked at me and said "I never buy my own perfume.":devil

That's pretty cool. It would probably work nicely if you crochet tight using wool then felting it. I think...

Thanks for the pattern and for bringing it back to the top on the forum again! I think I'm going to try it with plastic bags instead of rug yarn! Have to crochet DH something for the holidays and this he might use!

Hi. Thanks so much for this pattern! I am a third grade teacher at an International School in Saudi Arabia. I am going to make this little trash can for my student of the month for her desk! I thought of another idea that I might try. I will sew a bit of velcro to the trash can, and put the other side on the edge of this girl's desk! That way it will be handy, but won't take up needed room! For the person who was going to make one for her crochet scraps, this might be a good idea too!
Thanks again!

Hmm, i wonder if i could use hemp string to crochet this? There's a large size hemp twine at walmart that is about the same size around as a chunky yarn. I'll probably try it soon! :D
