I have a bunch of ideas in my head but I'm not sure how to write out the patterns. I would like to do some capelets and ponchos and hats and headbands. I have trouble getting beyond creating a basic tube instead of a capelet. I also have trouble keeping them even as I add length-kwim? Does anyone have any tips for writing patters or designing crochet items?
Thanks!!

I had someone ask me this once before & well it's just trial & error . I look at something and try to make that shape by inc or decrease or using diff stitches. I mostly have made toys and dog sweaters.
I start stitching and write it down and erase and frog and continue on like that, until I have what I want.If you want to make a hat let's say you can look at how other crocheted hats get their shape and go from there.
I started seeing some toys I liked but couldn't find the patterns so I just started stitching.Back then I didn't write anything down though :mad :oops I'm currently working on a hippo , and I've almost got it just need to finish some legs and try the pattern out again.
That's how I do it :knit :th until you get what you want :thumbsup :shrug

I am new "designer" and have only created a few things on my own but what I do is get a pen and paper and write everything out as I do it. Sometimes it'll take me several attempts to get a row the way I want it and to get the pattern I have in my head on paper. Just start hooking and make notes as you go. Then after you're done post that you're looking for "Testers" to work out the kinks. This helped me a great deal with my first pattern. I didn't realize until my testers helped me out that I had some things written backwards and some of them even had ideas to make it better...
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!
