This is a very simple, quick pattern. It took me about 2 hours to do, and that's because I was coming up with the pattern as I went along. :) It's meant to be a toy for a very young baby, so use the softest yarn you have. It would also look very nice if you use contrasting yarn for the legs, & the more contrasting the better, since newborns perceive good contrast the best.
Materials:
2 oz soft worsted weight yarn (This is an outside estimate; I used only part of a 3oz skein.)
tiny bits of blue and pink worsted weight yarn for features
fiberfill
yarn needle
stitch marker (I use a bobby-pin)
Directions:
Ch 2.
Round 1 Sc six times in 2nd chain. DO NOT TURN
Round 2 Sc 2x in each st around. Do not join. Place marker in last st & move each time you finish a round. 12 sc
Round 3 (Sc once in 1 st. Sc 2x in next st.) around 18 sc
Round 4 (Sc once in 2 st. Sc 2x in next st) around 24 sc
Round 5 (Sc once in 3 st. Sc 2x in next st) around 30 sc
Round 6 (Sc once in 4 st. Sc 2x in next st) around 36 sc
Round 7, 8, 9, & 10 Sc once in each st around. 36 sc
Stop here to embroider the features. Use the blue to embroider the eyes over round 5 (come out above 5, go in above 4, or vice versa, 5 times) and the pink to embroider the mouth over round 7 (come out on above round 6 & go diagonal to above round 7 & go in, skip over 2 sts & come out, then go in where you came out the first time, make the other mouth corner in the same manner as the first).
Decrease works as follows: draw up one loop in each of next two sts, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Round 11 (Sc once in 4 sts. Decrease over next 2 sts) around. 30 sts.
Round 12 (Sc once in 3 sts. Decrease over next 2 sts) around. 24 sts.
Stop here to make the legs:
Join yarn with slst in BLO (back loop only) of 3rd st. Sc 2x in BLO of this stich. (Ch 1, turn. Sc once in both sts) for an additional 19 rows. (I found it easier to do counting all the way up to 40 sc instead of trying to keep track of rows.) Finish off, leaving a long tail of yarn. Work legs in the same manner in sts 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, & 24. (Your life at the end will be much easier if you make sure the starting yarn tails go to the inside of the octopus.)
Round 13 Sc once in each st around, putting sc in FLO of sts 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, & 24. (Where the legs are.) 24 sts
Round 14 (Sc once in 2 sts. Decrease over next 2 sts) around. 18 sts.
Round 15 (Sc once in 1 st. Decrease over next 2 sts) around. 12 sts
Stop here to stuff the body of the octopus. Stuff well but not too tight, you want it to have some give.
Round 16 Decrease over 2 sts around. 6 sts
Round 17 Decrease over 2 sts around. 3 sts
Finish: Draw up a loop in all 3 sts (or only 2 if that's all you can grab with your hook), YO, and pull through. Cut with a very long tail. Thread that tail into yarn hook, stab it up through the body of the octopus and angle it to come out at the back. Clip the end of the tail as close to the body as you can, and tug a little to get it to disappear inside.
Cluster the legs together & trim the long yarn ends to the same length. (Yeah, you can weave them all into the stitching if you really want to, but leaving them as-is give it a nice sort of fringe look.) Weave in any other loose yarn ends.
