Help, my df's husband has asked me to make him a beanie hat. He rides a motorcycle (in the winter :wbrr) and he doesn't have any hair only a beard and moustache. :eek He wants the hat to fit snuggly and to resemble hair. I have bought black homespun yarn and fun fur. But now I need to find a pattern that will fit him snuggly, any suggestions?:think

There is a pretty easy pattern here: http://www.allfreecrafts.com/crochet/beanie.shtml

I would start by measuring his head, just below his ears (following the line where the bottom of the hat would circle his head). You want the bottom of the hat to be about an inch or so smaller in circumference, as it will stretch to fit snugly.

You will also want to measure the along the side of his head, length from the top of his head to just below his hears. That will tell you how long the hat should be so that there is not a big bulge at the top.

You may have to adjust the pattern slightly to get the right fit. I would start out crocheting a test hat first to see how close it comes to the measurements you need. Then you can add or remove stitches in the rounds you need to.

I would love to see a picture of the product when you get done. Good luck to you and Happy Crocheting!

Beanies are made by making a circle (by increasing stitches each row) for a few rows, then working straight on the same number of stitches.

Here's how to assure perfect fit--stop increasing the circle when the circumference of your circle reaches the same measurement as the first one Burnzzy described, even if it is more or less rows than the pattern calls for. Since the circle won't grow any more, it will be the right size where you need it to be. Then, finish to the length of the second measurement.

Thanks for the pattern and useful information. I'm going to make a trial one first, as you suggested. Will gladly post photos when complete.
