Here is a link to a great crochet pattern resource...this page is for just their 6 inch squares! I've made one called the Kingfield square and I really liked that one...I'm 21, so not too much older than the age group you're looking for!http://crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/6in_squares.php

:thinkIs there a reason that you want to make 6 inch squares?
Remember, there will be lots of joining.
If you make bigger squares so you need less of them therefore there is less joining.
The size of the square will depend on the size of the yarn and hook you use.
Just remember to use the recommended hook for the yarn, then you can use any pattern you like and see what size the squares turn out.
:hookIf you use thicker yarn and larger hook than the pattern, you will get a larger square and vice-versa.
After you have made the first square, you will be able to decide how many you need to get the size of afghan you want.
Sometimes it is more effective to just use a simple pattern and create the effect with your colours.
Hope this helps.
Have fun.
