Hello Everyone... I just watched the movie Raising Helen, with Kate Hudson, in it she has a black and white blanket that (to me) looks like its crocheted... There really isnt a very good close up of it, but it is used throughout the movie... Does anyone else know the blanket Im talking about? I was really wanting to find the pattern for this blanket.. Im fairly sure that I could make up the pattern, but if there is one out there for it, Id rather go that way... Please get back to me, I really appreciate it!
Thanks so much

Now you're making me want to go watch the movie again to look for the blanket LOL.
Good luck on finding the pattern.

Just make black and white granny squares, flipping the color way for each block.
You can do it several different ways to get whatever look you want.
1. Traditional grannies just keep in mind it'll be more open than the one from the movie but still have the same 'feel'.
2. Closed grannies like these. Just remember to adjust for two colors and you can use any yarn you'd like:

3. Strips (or one large panel and just do repeats of the strips) where you change colors to make it look like squares.

If you haven't joined Lionbrand yet, you will have to in order to see the patterns. It's free.

Thanks so much for the replies!! I do appreciate it! I did just figure that it was "solid" granny blocks, but it almost doesnt look like its blocks put together, its really smooth looking.. but if you do them right, you get that look.. In a way I kinda thought that it might have been done like a normal afghan and just had color changes.. Its really pretty, kind of retro in a way.. There are no holes in it, so I know its not the traditional granny, but in a way it doesnt look like its blocks either, because you cant see the corners to it.. But again there arent really any good close ups to it... Maybe Ill go put the dvd in and find a good shot of it and do a lil zoom'in on it.. I will also go and look at the site that were shared! I was plannin on just makin my own pattern, I do that alot, but I just wanted to ask around here...
Thanks again

I just went from a photo I found and it was hard to see. I don't have the movie to check.
If you look at the last set of links I gave you under number 3, they are done in a 'normal' afghan way. They are done in strips so you could do it that way to make it easier on yourself or you could do it all at once and just repeat the color changes before you start the next rows. I hope that makes sense.

I'm not sure about the exact blanket you're referring to, but this one might just work out for you.

It's easy to make, looks great, and lends itself to all sorts of two-color combinations.

The movie was on tv again today so I recorded it with my dvr, paused it in a couple spots and did have trouble looking at it, but then theres a spot in the movie where she (Helen) moves the 3 kids into her tiny apartment, with only one bed they all had to sleep in her full sized bed... Well, that blanket is the top blanket on it... So I paused it and did some counting, it has 19 "blocks" across starting and ending with a white one that has a black center, the next row of "blocks" is opposite... And its border is black all the way around... So, my theory of it is, by seeing that shot of it, that the "blocks" are 4dc white, 8dc black, 4dc white, 4 dc black, 8dc white, 4dc black, and so on.. and prolly have to carry the colors over OR have separate smaller balls for each color change, but thats ALOT... Im already doing that with a Rebel Flag afghan for my husband and I have to pick and choose my time to work on that one because I have a 6 month old baby rolling all over the floor thinkin she needs to get into everything and a 3 year old lil gal who thinks its fun to play house with all of the small balls of yarn in the nifty divided box that my hubby and I made up.
I have to add to that though.. If any of you ever need to have a bunch of separate smaller balls of yarn I have the coolest way of keeping them divided and tangle free.. Let me know if you want my secret... Its awesome and I have pictures of it to share!!!
Thanks for all of your help..

Nope that's not even close to what she wants. The Lionbrand links in my first post under number 3 is more what she wants. ;)

tnt, i have an idea on the afghan, sorta. No pattern, but divide it down (since its suppose to be blocks), into stripes. do a strip w/ the center part, and a strip w/ the blocks outside part. that way you wont have so many changes or balls to deal w/.
Not 100% sure that makes sense outside my head, lol (it's a odd little world in there, ya know? ;) ). I might could explain it better if you need me to try in do so.
As for your idea on how to keep the balls divided and tangle-free, I'd be interested. :)

It's not just color blocks. Think of it like a round bullseye but square. It's a square in a square.
Here's the trailer. Click Trailers and Clips then click trailer. The blanket shows up at almost the half way point. You can pause it to look at it.

So, Thank you all, but I looked more closely at the movie, and the scene that has the full blanket has a clip with the little girl and the blanket in front of her close up. Im almost positive that its not crocheted, but it really does have that look to it.. but you cant see thru it.. you know like how you can kinda see thru a solid set of DC's, it doesnt. But even though it may not be a crocheted blanket, I sat down last night with my hubby and did some numbers and this morning I made a tester of a single block... Im going to make it, but it wont be in blocks, it will be done just like a normal afghan, in rows, changing colors as I go.. It should be really neat and hopefully when I get it done I will remember to post it on here!! The tester block looks and turned out great!! Im very happy with it. Again, I want to tell you all who sent me ideas Thank You So Much!!!
Now for the request on the yarn separator......
My Hubby likes beer, most men do... So, I had him go pick up a couple boxes of bottled beer.. these were 12 to a box. Then we just cut off 1 long edge flap off each box, set them together and duct taped them together. Inside the boxes are cardboard dividers so the bottles dont bang around and break! Genius Idea if I dont say so myself! Prolly the only great Idea I will ever have in my lifetime, so Im gonna milk it for all its worth! I had been naggin my hubby to make me something like that box, he got to thinkin about using wood, or plastic, but this was a quick and easy fix and I love it.... If you want to do that but dont want the "beer box" look, just wrap them with wrapping paper, or paint it to cover the beer.. easily fixable!! Hope it helps you guys!
Thanks again
