View Full Version : Designing for Print Publication Online Class with MARY BETH TEMPLE--JAN 2009

Crochetville LLC
November 13, 2008, 04:13 PM
Registration for this class is now CLOSED. Maximum number of students has been reached.

Teacher: Mary Beth Temple, MBT (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/member.php?u=5943), Hooked for Life (http://www.hookedforlifepublishing.com/) and Getting Loopy (http://www.gettingloopy.com/) podcast

Class Cost: $30.00 – three-week class

Registration Dates: Registration is now CLOSED. Maximum number of students has been reached.

Class Begins: January 23, 2009

Skill Level: You must be serious about developing designs for publication. You will actually create a design proposal and submit for publication during the course of this class. You may create a new design or use a design on which you're already working.

http://www.crochetville.org/forum/onlineclasses/0109/mbt.jpg

Description: A lot of crocheters want to be designers. How cool would it be to be paid for doing something you love? A lot of those aspiring designers have a zillion ideas in their heads and don’t much care about the business side of things – they are looking for some extra yarn money or to pay the light bill, not a full time income. They submit a design or two, maybe sell one but maybe not, and either get distressed by the rejection, or distressed because when all is said and done, the process took a lot longer and was a lot more complicated than they expected.

This class is about the business of being a professional crochet designer. Even if you sell only one design you are a professional – you are doing your art for money rather than for love. And even if you don’t want to do this full time, the more business-like you are throughout the entire process of getting a design into publication, the happier your editors will be (and then the more likely to want to work with you again and again) and the happier YOU will be because you will have a clear-eyed set of expectations about what will and won’t happen.

For this class, students should be prepared to focus on one design, and we will go through the submission process step by step. By the end of week three, each student should have a submission in review somewhere!

Hi! I am debating this class and wondering if it will cover how to know what designs would be more likely to get published. In other words if I have a few in mind would it be better to go with an easier project or a harder one, an afghan or a warable etc...

TIA

I don't know that there is a one sized fits all answer to that question - we will certainly be talking about tailoring your submission to your target magazine/publisher/yarn company.

That maks sense, different publications would have different priorities. Thanks!

Hi,

I was wondering how internationally applicable the information in the class is - i.e. if I were submitting for publication in Australia would the class have the same amount of value as if I were submitting in America?

Cheers,

Just FYI, it says on this thread that the registration isn't open, but it is, and you can register for this course.

I am so excited!

Registration for this class has now been closed. We have reached the maximum number of students for this class.

If you did not get registered for this class and are interested in taking it in the future, please post in this thread so we can see how much interest there is in offering the class again.

I did not register this time around because:

a) my question regarding international applicability has not been answered and I did not want to pay $30 to find the class was directed at US publications only...

and

b) I am reentering full time teaching the week after the course commences and would not have the time to devote to it...

If the course were offered again at a better time for me and if the answer to a was encouraging, I would love to take the class at a future offering (especially if the reports from the first crop of students are positive ;)).

Cheers,

Since Crochetville is based in the United States, chances are that Mary Beth's class is going to be focused on submitting to US publications, at least as far as being able to provide contact information for specific publications. I am sure many of the things Mary Beth will cover are applicable no matter where you are sending your proposal, though.

Contact information about the various publishers in other countries around the world is not necessarily readily accessible to us here. If those of you who are based outside the United States have contact information for non-US magazines or publishing houses, you're welcome to forward that information to us.

I really do hope this class if offered again. I was laid off so I couldn't afford the class at the time that it was opened but hopefully next time around I'll have the money. This is one class I'd wanted to take more than any other class I'd ever seen. I am soooo very interested in submitting a couple of my designs for publication.

Merry Christmas

Julee

Hello all, I've just joined Crochetville. Delighted to find the online classes and particularly interested in this Design for Publication class. Can you possibly put me on a waiting list for the next one? I'm very interested. Many thanks, Lilycobweb

Sorry, but we can't do waiting lists due to the way the forum software processes registrations. Whenever we open up registration for a particular class, it's on a first-come, first-serve basis until the class fills up.

We'll have to wait and see how this class goes before we know whether it will be offered in the future. Our next round of classes will take place in March, with registration in February, so be on the lookout to see what's on the schedule!

I have no objection to teaching it again, provided I don't mess up this time :-) If all goes well and my current students don't string me up, I will teach it again in March!
