Description:
Intimidated by knitted socks? Learn to make simply easy crochet socks from the Toe up. Use your favorite sock yarn and learn a new stitch to create a softer fabric with toes and heels that are a bit heavier to prevent wearing out quickly. They are made in one piece with just 2 ends per sock to weave in. We will also work both socks together to help prevent 1 sock syndrome!
Class will be broken up in to two parts: Week 1: Creating the toe and foot; Week 2: Turning the heel, leg and cuff.
Supplies Needed:
350 yards of your favorite sock yarn - Divided into 2 balls
Size E (3.5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed for gauge
Class Policies: Click here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=61285) to read our Online Class Policies for students. Please read these policies prior to registering for a class.
Maximum Number of Students Accepted: Approximately 30

My tip for avoiding one-sock syndrome: get two hooks (or two sets of knitting needles if you knit them) and work on both socks at the same time. Do so many rows on sock 1, then the same number of rows on sock 2.
It makes it much easier to wind up with a completed pair of socks! :hook

Except in crocheting, you don't really need two hooks...since the stitches aren't held on the hook, one hook for two socks will do just fine. :)

I never even thought of that. It probably makes them come out more evenly too. (I have problems making pairs of anything-- socks, slippers, mittens...)

You could use it.. but it will cause the socks to be extremely large. The pattern we are using is designed to work with fingering weight.. You would have to adjust it for the yarn weight...

If you have a local yarn store, they probably have a wide variety of sock yarns available, but those will probably be in the $16-$20 range for enough sock weight (fingering weight) yarn to make a pair of socks.
If you want to be a bit more budget-conscious on your first outing, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and Joann's are now carrying some inexpensive sock yarns: Patons Stretch Socks, Patons Kroy Socks, Moda Dea Sassy Stripes, Lion Brand Sock Ease, Red Heart Heart & Sole.
Personally, I usually use the expensive LYS and indie dyer yarns, just because they come in so many wonderful, wonderful self-striping and self-patterning colors. Even if it costs me $20-$25 for the yarn, when I divide that cost by the number of hours it takes me to make a pair of socks, the cost per hour is really, really low!

I couldnt agree more with Amy on going to the LYS to get sock yarn. The colors are just YUMMY and you cannot ever go wrong with just about any color choice there!
If you are on a budget though, I will recommend Patons Kroy. I have used it many times as well and I love the texture and how it works up.

Tempting.. I collect socks..
Except the class starts the Friday before finals. :P
No way I will have time to crochet anything while both dealing with my own finals and that of my students. (Grad student.. I take classes and teach undergrads.)
I've played around with crocheting socks before, and my aunt bought me a book in November when I visited her for Thanksgiving. I've tried to learn to knit specifically for sock making purposes, but I'm just too awkward with knitting needles. They're too long for me, I think. Plus, I've been experimenting with crochet hooks since I was 10.

I've never done a class online with C'Ville (or anywhere else, for that matter) and trying to figure out how it works. Is there a specified time when our instructor will be online to answer questions, or do we just post and she replies as soon as she can? How is this different from reading a pattern online and figuring it out on your own? :think

This is my first time doing an On-line class like this... so we will learn together!
My goal is to be online at least 1 hour per day.. but more if needed. As we get closer and I see what my daily schedule is like, I am thinking that I will post the day before what time I will be online. However, you can ask questions at anytime and I will answer the next I am on line.
What I will be doing is giving you the partial pattern the first week, along with some basic instructional stuff to go with it. Then the 2nd week I will give you the remaining pattern and more instructional info. At the end of the class I will post the "official" pattern as I sell it on my website as a bonus for taking the class.
I hope it will be fun for all of you! I am one of those teachers who feels that I haven't done my job if you are not enjoying the class and having a good time!

I'm using KP Dancing on a pair of socks that I'm knitting right now..
It's the same blend. I'm still undecided whether I like it. It kinda feels like it would be scratchy but when I tried it on it was okay.. I don't know what it would be like wearing shoes. I do like the snug fit on the leg.. I'm doing the heel flap now.
Sorry not much help here.

My tip for avoiding one-sock syndrome: get two hooks (or two sets of knitting needles if you knit them) and work on both socks at the same time. Do so many rows on sock 1, then the same number of rows on sock 2.
It makes it much easier to wind up with a completed pair of socks! :hook
I'm learning how to knit my first toe-up sock (first sock ever actually) as we speak, and while I'm thrilled and feel like I have a PhD in knitting since learning how to do a provisional cast-on, knit with 5 double-points without stabbing myself, and turn a heel without stabbing my instructor, I have to say the concept of doing this all over again for sock #2 is daunting and a bit depressing! LOL!!!
Whether my NEXT pair is knitted or crocheted, I will definitely be attempting to complete them BOTH at the same time!

Hi Kath! The page I directly Linked to is 100% silk! Pricey But beutiful!
Ah Ok I went to the sock yarn link on the left of that page.
Is that silk sock weight/fingering weight?
It is 6 stitches per inch and their sock yarn is anywhere from 8 to 10.
Their heavyweight sock yarn is 6 and is a lightweight worsted.
Ive never worked with silk before so not sure if Id have to change hook size to get the proper gauge for this pattern.
And if we can use a lightweight worsted silk can we get away with any lightweight worsted in your pattern?
Thanks

Hi again!
I used Regia Crazy colors for the model sock.. and here is the info:
http://www.carodanfarm.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/product69.html
Regia yarn in a 6Ply DK weight yarn. Striping and jacquard patterning. 75% wool, 25% nylon. Machine washable. 137 yds/50g ball. Gauge is 5.5 sts/in on size 5-6 needles. Need 2-3 balls for a pair of socks.
So I think that the silk yarn will work for you! We will talk about adjusting the gauge a bit too!

I have knit socks with the heavyweight yarn, it was so yummy to knit with. I knit a pair of sock for my hubby and ME for our Cruise to Alaska last May. They were great sleeping socks. They are a great company with great products. Just a satisified customer. I will order more as soon as I make my first crocheted pair of socks and learn the technique.

CHeck out Pagewood Farms Yarns.. they have a wonderful bamboo sock yarn.. or do a search for Bamboo or Silk sock yarns there are several out there.
Karen,
I actually found some Crystal Palace Panda Cotton sock yarn at http://www.theloopyewe.com/ online. The fiber content is 55% Bamboo, 24% cotton, 21% elastic nylon. I've already received it and it has a very nice feel to it. I've got my size E crochet hook & I'm all ready to go. I can't wait to get started! :U

I'm sorry you missed registration! We had a notice at the top of every forum page (except Show and Tell) announcing the date registration would open for about a week prior. Registration opened on Monday, February 16, and this class closed on Friday, February 20. All through this past week we had a notice at the top of the forum showing people how many spots were still open in that class. (We removed that information on Friday when the class filled.)
For future classes, please look in these places for registration information:
A notice will be placed at the top of every forum page (except Show and Tell) about a week before registration opens.
This thread (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=95095) also has information about when registration will open for the rest of 2009 so everyone can make plans accordingly.
I cannot stress enough how important it is for everyone to read the information in the Notices at the top of forum pages. We use the Notices for information that every forum member should know.
Everyone is also always welcome to PM me at any time if you have any questions about registration for any of the online classes.
The good news is that Karen will be teaching this class later this year, as long as this class goes as well as we expect it to!

I went to Michaels and unfortunately the yarn just followed me home...I won't even say home many skeins made it home with me :blush:eek I did find the Patons Stretch Sock for $2.50 and Paton's Kroy Sock yarn for $3.50 which was a steel considering I'd been surfing the web looking for some sock yarn that wouldn't kill my budget. I think I'll start with these yarns and see how I like them in the making of the socks. If I get hooked then I'll consider better sock yarn :D

Hi JoviMom,
I've got a question for you.
I just completed another sock pattern from the Sept/Oct 2008 Crochet Today magazine. And while it is an anklet, using the yarn and hook they recommended, it feels more like a "house sock" than a sock that can fit under a real shoe.
Will your sock pattern help us create socks that are wearable with shoes, given the yarn choice and the gauge, or are most crochet socks, by design, just too "thick" for that?
Thanks! Alaina

This weekend I am planning on going to the yarn shop and look at sock yarn. I did buy my yarn it's call Heart and Sole by Red Heart, it has aloe in the yarn.Ii want to make sure that I want to use this yarn for my first crochet sock. When I brought the yarn I did not pay much attention to the content of the yarn, and now after reading a few posts I want to go back to the yarn shop and shop with fibre content in mind. I guess it's the excitement of taking this course that got to me. :think

Hi Alaina!
I thought I had posted a response, but I guess not! :(
If you chose to use fingering weight yarn, then, yes, you should be able to wear these socks in shoes. I do! :) That being said, It does does make a difference on how tightly you wear your shoes!
Crochet is always going to be more dense than knit.. that is just the nature of the beast. However, I am designing a new pattern right now that is working out to be a lot thinner than even this first sock design....

What is the difference from regular, baby weight yarn from sock yarn? Does sock yarn just have elastic in it?

What is the difference from regular, baby weight yarn from sock yarn? Does sock yarn just have elastic in it?
Yes, sock yarn usually has some nylon or elastic in it to give it more give/flexibility and help it be more durable.
Sock yarn is also usually somewhat thinner than most baby yarn.
Having said that, I will tell you that I have and do use thin baby yarn for socks all the time without any trouble. The acrylic has enough give for me and I haven't had any problems with durability as long as the stitch pattern is "flat". (also a sock hint, be sure to always wash your socks inside out! )
Sock yarn is yummy but for some budgets a big skein of the thinner baby yarn suits just fine. :)
Just be sure to check your gauge.

Not all sock yarn has elastic in it.. Just made more durable then baby yarn, baby yarn would wear out faster on the feet..:lol. Most sock yarn is fingerweight.

Most sock yarn DOESNT have Elastic in it my expoerience. Nylon maybe, Bamboo and silk even cashmere. There are lots of blends out there.
I tend to stick with Wool or SWTC Tofutsies, thought I am starting to love the New Flat Feet yarn (http://www.conjoinedcreations.com/CC_Webpages/Flat_Feet.html) too.
One think I have discovered in making crocheted socks, You MUST find a yarn that you LIKE! If you dont like it, you wont either A) Finish it or B) wear them.

I can hardly wait to start class. Unfortunately, I will be out of town all day on Friday and not able to start until Saturday. Am determined to get past that one sock syndrome. Have been collecting every free sock pattern I could find, reading and comparing. My foot is rather short but I have a very high arch so anxious to see if I'll have to make pattern adjustment for that. I love all the beautiful sock yarns (I've had mine for awhile). Is there an "off season" for sock yarn wheres you might find it on sale? Do the colors usally stick around from season to season or do you see new color inventory as seasons change? I've not really paid much attention previously not being involved in sock making.

I really havent seen any "off-season" on sock yarn. They are so popular, that I think shops just have them around all the time.
As for color, I do see seasonal Inventory in colors. One prime example is Knit Picks line. I see new seasonal colors in their catalogs.

My plan for tomorrow is to post the 1st assignment before 8AM PST. It might even be tonight sometime!
I then will be off-line for a few hours (I have an appt in Seattle) but I will be back on line around 3-4 PM to check on status and answer any questions! and I will be here for as long as anyone might need me tomorrow night!
After that, I will be in the classroom on and off everyday! Probably for some time in the morning and then again in the afternoon.
I am really excited to meet and chat and work with all of you the next 2 weeks!
