Right now the temperatures on the reservation on hitting -10 below zero - the family I write to leaves in an old trailer with no heat, no electricity and no running water, there are 15 living in this old trailer - I know so often we hear about the wealthy natives and the casinos but this is not true for all tribes, The poorest ten counties in the US today are on reservations and 8 of the ten are in South Dakota - please reach out and help - you are all such great crafters, a scarf. a sweater, blanket, pot holder, all would help so very much and let them know that there is a world outside of their borders that really cares.

Pine Indian Reservation is the poorest in the United States, The Wall Street Journal says the people there are among the poorest in the world - the average income is similar to that of India or Haiti, perhaps even poorer, the community of 40,000 people often live without heat and electricity, the elders the oldest grandpas and grandmas will give their blankets and coats to the little ones, and often may freeze themselves rather than letting a little one dye of cold. It is so hard that here in the United States where we are considered a leading country in the world that we care so little about our own. When you are making a scarf, toy, afghan for that little one of yours, think about a child at Pine ridge, and make a second for them. / (http://www.spirit-rising.org/)

Please help - they can use afghans, fleece blankets, with 40,000 people the need is overwhelming.. You do not have to make afghans you can search your closets for gently used warm clothing coats and jackets. you can make baby layettes, sweaters, hats, mittens, socks, socks are so needed as their shoes have so many holes that their socks are always wet from the snow, anything to keep warm, and if you make a purse or two how happy do you think that might make a teenage girl? and toys if you do not even have a bed or crib to sleep on you can bet there are no cute animals. Please consider joining us in the effort to help these desperate peoples right in our own back yard.

Many of the women quilt, and crochet and knit and will also gladly accept your donations of yarn, hooks, needles, quilting, beading supplies.

I am on line too - I had no idea about the horrible conditions there - I am always amazed at the compassion we have for others, but how we can ignore our people here at home! Sometimes we are so ignorant of what is happening to those around us!

Everyone, I want to let you know that Crafting for a Cause is a GREAT group, and no one is ever made to feel less welcome if you can't afford to make a lot. Even one item every three months is welcomed; and if funds for yarn or shipping or short, there are people who can help you out. And I found out that a local store that sells native art and crafts is also collecting for Spirit Rising.

I participate in the Elder friendship match, and it's such fun to find or make a little item for your partner. Many of us have also called our Elder if he or she has a phone, and it is so interesting to speak with someone far away and learn about them and their lifestyle.

So, if you want to have fun with some wonderful crafters, make new friends and help out people in need, please come join us.

I'm the project manager of both the elders and holiday projects. So far we have matched up 45 elders with members!! I'm getting a new list of names soon. It would be wonderful if we could help every elder there. Plus it's a wonderful learning experience. The Lakota people have such a rich culture and certainly affords an opportuinty to learn a little about it. But you can also choose to make a quarterly donation, and that is fine as well!

The holiday project still has 2 families needing holiday sponsors. It's short term...just one gift for the family and a small gift for each child. And I can get more names. :D

I know you'll love it Susana! We can't do everything that is needed, but even one small thing makes someone's life a bit easier. I LOVE having been matched with an Elder, and it's so easy to make someone's life a bit brighter. But I've found that I get so much more back from the lady I am matched with. It's so exciting to me to have made a new friend.

We will be having more elders on our list to adopt. Mira has been doing a great job matching elders for us!:cheer

We also are doing a fleece blanket drive for the children with cancer at UC Davis medical center.:manyheart

I'm not by any means questioning this is a good cause. I am floored that there is such a need. Why are we so uninformed? I'm puzzled too why, in general terms, anyone living on a reservation would be so financial straped? I've always been of the impression they don't pay taxes, they get money from their tribes, they make money off gambling which isn't legal for non American Indians except in certain locations, they're given special assistance for education both on and off the reservation, food stamps and that type of welfare programs. Is this particular reservation somehow being excluded from all thats available to others? It's been years since we've been that direction. We did once go through a small portion of the res, it was a very bad time to be there as there were protests going on. Lots of folks standing around with guns, and they were flying The American Flag upside down. I was very troubled by the experience. Felt very unsafe there with all the glares towards my family. When we returned from vacation, I did some research and found they were protesting many things, but primarily it was directed at someone being found guilty and put in prision for murder on the res; that they all apparently thought to be inocent.

You are there now and have more current and up to date info, so please don't be offended at my question. It's just as I get older have learned I question many things; sometimes things are not what they seem. I like to know the charities I help are truly in need and interested, and not abusing the situation (I've been burned a few times giving).

First off, I'm sorry you visited the Rez during such a horrid time. Yes, that would have most likely beein AIM (American Indian Movement) petitioning about Leonard Pelletier. AIM is a VERY militant group and I steer clear of them. And I have my own opinions as far as Pelletier...lol!

As for the gambling, the reservations that DO have casinos still do not make a huge profit. They must split all profits between every registered tribal member. And for said casino to be profitable, it would need to be close to civilization...not so for Pine Ridge. The nearest town of any size is hours away.

These people really do not get all the things we are told they recieve. One family that I sponsor was told they would be given supplies to build a new home. Their current home is infested with black mold and they have kids with asthma who cannot be in the rooms with it. It's been a few years and they are STILL waiting!

Now as for special stuff like education, etc. The first thing you have to have is a BIA card. Not all Natives are card carrying. You do not get one when you're born, they must be applied for. I know of many that refuse a BIA card as they see it as the government trying to track them. And without it, there is no extra help. Food stamps...same laws apply as to everyone else I believe. Many states have a lifetime limit on welfare programs. Here in NH, you can only recieve TANF for 60 months...some states is less! Jobs are hard to find as there is no industry on the Rez. And few have cars, and there is no public transportation. So the only option left is by foot...again...nearset sizeable town hours away!

There is little medical care, schools are some of the worst, racism is still prevalent, etc, etc, etc.

It really is horrible there. The government is real good at trying to cover up. They make promises that are never followed through on...just as they have for years. I've personally talked people on the Rez, I have friends that have been there, have friends that come from there. And it's not just Pine Ridge...all of them have similar conditions...the Penobscot in ME, the Navajo in the southwest, the Cherokee, Hopi, Cheyenne, Comanche, Apache...the list is endless.

I really can't get into a lot of details without getting really political...it is a political situation really. So if you'd like to chat further on it, feel free to PM or e-mail me.

Thanks so much Kittencrochet for all the news. How sad, really sad. You're right it was AIM etc. I couldn't think of the names previously,. but when I read your note it hit like a bolt.

I do want to help, just signed on to a military thing tonight. I need to make sure I'm not stretching myself too thin. So I will definately be back in touch.

I didn't know about the cards. It's a shame they don't get them so they can get a little help, but I sure understand being proud and not wanting to do that. We've not carved a proud spot in history with our treatment of The Native Americans.

And more programs are forthcoming, I believe. Even if you can't do anything quite yet, feel free to join and participate as you are able. We love meeting new members.

I grew up in the Native community here in NH. But I have found I've learned so much from these people in such a short time. One elder I sponsor, we talk on the phone once a month...he tells me the old stories and we chat about anything and everything. My son tells everyone, that's "his" grandpa...lol!

You did such a good job of explaining - I belong to a crochet gorup at college and will see if I can get some people interested - with christmas break coming it might be hard but for sure after the first - isn't it too bad that we always put ourselves first! when others are in such need but I know that there is a long cold winter coming - and I just read some information about the infant mortality rate there at the Pine Ridge reservation and how many of the old, weak, and the very young die each year just from hypothermia - we are talking about the United states a leading world power and people freezing to death - it is so sad -

And if we do not want to sign up to sponsor an elder are there other things we can do? Carol

the address is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CraftingForACause

Right now I have 3 single elders and 2 couples waiting for sponsors. One couple the wife had brain surgery and is wheelchair bound...they are raising their grandchildren and the wife enjoys sewing. The other couple are in their early 60's...they work with horses, taking care of their grandchildren and the wife likes to quilt.

For the singles, one is in her 60's and likes to quilt and make designs...another is 57 and raising 6 kids, she likes to sew and make quilt blocks but particularly likes to do beadwork...and the last one is raising 5 kids and is very sickly...she has arthritis and is in a lot of pain. There will be more names coming soon...as well as possibly from another reservation as well...I'm looking into a contact with the Navajo in Chinle, AZ.

When you sign up for an elder, you are making a commitment of 1 year. And at any time, if you can't participate for whatever reason, that is fine. You would send one package each month to your elder, or elders. It doesn't have to be anything big. Last month I sent dishcloths I made and some tea. This month I'm sending Christmas ornaments, cocoa and probably some cookies. So the packages do not have to be expensive. The goal is to bring a smile to their face. People have sent blankets, food, dishcloths, lotions, candles, tea, cocoa, coffee...all sorts of different things. Items can be handmade or store bought...it doesn't matter. The only restrictions are that we cannot send religious items out of respect for their beliefs (many follow traditional Lakota ways) and we cannot send money. You communicate with that elder directly...by mail and phone if they have a number.

If someone did not want to sponsor an elder, they could opt to participate in a quarterly project. They would send a package to our contact on the Rez who then distributes the items to others. We have this both for the elders and children. Besides that, we also have projects for the Chain Gang and UC Davis in CA. So there's lots to choose from. There's also a Pine Ridge Holiday Project that is wrapping up very soon. People are matched to a family on Pine Ridge and help bring them some holiday cheer. We ask that one item be sent for the family (board game, card game, cookies, etc) and one small item for each child. We have 2 families left that need sponsors for that...one with 3 kids and one with 4.

I personally sponsor 3 elders and it's been great. One of the grandmas...she sent me a pair of beautiful earrings that she beaded. I was not expecting it and was deeply touched by that. The grandpa I sponsor, we chat on the phone once or twice a month. We're even making plans for me to come out there this summer for a visit. He loves talking with my son, who is 7, and eants him to come spend a summer with him to teach him the old ways. My son is half Native American...not Lakota...but he said he needs to learn how his ancestors lived...hear the stories, etc. It has certainly been a very educational experience.

I heard from my elder today and I really had no idea just how bad things are - they live in an old mobile home - they have no electricity or running water, and their only heat is a propane heater - the grandma is in her 70s and she is caring for 9 grandchildren from age of 9 months to 16. They have no beds and some of the windows are missing, but they have boarded them up, big problem is that the trailor has black mold and the children all have allergies and asthma from it. I am disabled so I can not do much, but darn it I can do something. I know Mira has many elders waiting. Even if all you can do is send a scarf one month, or a pot holder another month, a book mark, you may not be able to change the conditions but you can let them know that there is someone out here who cares!

I just read a press release today - it announced the 100 poorest counties in the US. When you look at the ten poorest counties you find that 8 of them are Indian reservations in South Dakota and the other two Indian reservations in Arizona - what does that say about how we take care of our own. I wrote something to our local freecycle group - and got a few responses back telling me to tell them to use their casino money - why don't people think about what they are saying all you have to do is look at the map and you see there is a very small population in these areas - and that the reservations are a long ways from a city - you have to have people with money to spend to run a casino and be withint driving distance for people to get there - cheese anyway. Just makes me mad

kittencrochet
December 26, 2005, 05:45 PM
I've heard numerous times the casino sentiment. And people wondering why these people aren't getting help like all the other tribes. Here is the cold, hard reality of where all this money is and the amounts.

For starters, a good many Lakota people recieve lease royalties from the BIA for land holdings. The normal payout for this averages only $50 a month. That's only $600 a year.

The casino does turn a profit. But, it is 100+ miles from Rapid City in the middle of a prairie. Now I don't know about any of you, but I certainly wouldn't travel that far to chance winning money.

Many tribes have access to minerals, oil, gas etc to make a profit from. Not so for the Lakota people. There is none of that in the prairie. And no industry on the Reservation.

Average income for a typical family that recieves welfare or veteran's benefits is approximately $7200 a year.

Why don't they leave? Many do. And then they come back because their entire family is still there. They are of the belief that you care for your loved ones. And so you will find overcrowded homes. Families take in homeless family members. It's not uncommon to have over a dozen people living in a 2 or 3 bedroom trailer.

It is a difficult task to set up a business on Pine Ridge. It can take, and often does, 2 years to get approval. Then high expenses to get basic utilities needed. Most communities have little to no infrastructure. On top of that, it is a high risk loan area.

So as you can see, where other tribes can help themselves, it has become a harder task for the Oglala and Lakota people.

Another note on the casinos. All profit has to be split between all tribal members! In 1998, there were 40,000+ living on Pine Ridge. Imagine winning the lottery and having to split it with over 40,000 other winners. And a small jackpot at that. Gives one a little better insight to the casino junk.

I sponsor a family on Pine Ridge and was appauled at the conditions there. The family I talk to lives in a home with basic ammenities and feels incredibly greatful for that.
I sponsor two girls and the first time I spoke to their grandmother to get an idea of what the girls needed, I was expecting detailed answers of frivilous things the girls wanted, but she said they really needed basic food, warm clothing, underwear, etc. Neither of them had a warm coat. The grandmother explained that there are very few jobs on the reservation and the nearest town with available jobs is over an hour away, as well as any place to buy basic goods.
I have really enjoyed getting to know the family I work with there and would highly recommend this experience to anyone. I sponsor with Spirit Rising, which is currently undergoing some changes, but I am only asked to send 5 items per year.
Just wanted to share my experience.

Tough winter for Pine Ridge Reservation residents
Thursday, December 8, 2005

Residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota are worried they might not be able to heat their homes this winter.

Below-zero temperatures, storms and high energy prices have hurt the reservation, the Associated Press reports. Celeste Pretends Eagle, a 25-year-old single mother of four, ran out of propane and had to use a space heater to keep her family warm. A businessman has since offered to help the family pay for propane, The Rapid City Journal reports.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe runs an energy assistance program but it has run out of money for the past two winters. The state has already received more applications than usual for its assistance program.

Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) and Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota) are seeking more federal funds to help low-income families.

Rosa-
Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. My dad is Oglala, and was lucky enough to have had parents who "escaped" the reservation, so he was raised in sunny California. I've been out to the badlands to see where my grandparents grew up. Even in June, there's still snow in the black hills.

Did you know that the life expectancy of a plains indian is less than the average life expectancy in Bangladesh? Between diabetes and brutal temperatures, the old people don't have a chance.

And so, I will continue to support my fellow indians living in such horrible conditions, knowing that there but by the grace of God go I.

Pilamaya ye!

It's so sad what these people are going through, it seems like someone would do something to help them. (Besides us, that is.) :angry Ugh!!... don't get me started. Well I am glad I can do my little part. Besides crocheting/crafting, I have some gently used boys' clothes I can donate.

I just applied to join too. I'm Oglala on my paternal grandmother's side, and I've been to Pine Ridge and have seen what it's like to live there. I'd LOVE to be able to help out, in any way I can. My grandmother, btw, was a volunteer nurse & therapist on Rosebud some years ago. I was too young to join her at the time, but I always wished I could have. I was really thrilled to see one of her dearest friends from the rez featured in Ken Burns' The West documentary. :U I wanted to reach through the screen and say hello. :2blush I'd love to be able to send some warm scarves & hats & things to the rez...

I just crocheted some trim around some magic gloves and socks that are being discounted due to the season tranfer in retail sales. Though I don't have time to crochet full pairs- I did this and am sending them along on Tuesday. It takes just a small amount of fun fur or novelty yarn. I made some for my teens first to see if they would like them. I also used some of the "free" Disco yarn. I could trim several pairs in one afternoon.

Has anyone crocheted into fleece? I bought some fleece and thought I could put an edge on the short edges. Well- I crochet tops into towels so I'll try the same size hook.
let me know if you have done this successfully-
Thanks-

I have not crocheted onto the fleece - but so many times you can get a plain color much cheaper than those with designs so I am going to try it on some scrap and let you know what a super idea - and I love the idea of the magic mittens too - lol

I've applied to join the Yahoo group. I just found a finished baby blanket in Pound of Love from the Leisure Arts Heirloom Afghans for Baby book (Exquisite, my favorite pattern in the book, but they're all gorgeous) about which I contacted the local Project Linus no less than three times to donate, but no one *ever* got back to me. I've also got a few skeins of Light & Lofty that makes super-cozy scarves, and some of the Big Lots sale skeins of Caron Feathers that make fluffy scarves that are nice for little girls and teenagers. And, most of one skein of brown Wool Ease Thick & Quick that can be made into boy's hats.

Glad for the opportunity to destash for a good cause -- I can't pawn off any more scarves around here. Looking forward to finding out where to send it all.

Just sent off pouch today of a matching set: Hat, Scarf, and leg warmers orange regular knitted worsted jazzed up with cool trim (super soft Italian yarn, 2 shades of orange, blue, yellow, green, and black). Using myself as a size would work for a small woman or older teen.

Who knows the area well enough to know when the weather switches and is terribly hot? Just to give us a heads up for planning ahead.

I'm from South Dakota and I just wanted to share this information about the climate that I found on the Pine Ridge site (http://www.lakotamall.com/oglalasiouxtribe/): (http://www.lakotamall.com/oglalasiouxtribe/%29:)
The climate of the reservation is typical of the Northern Great Plains with extremes during the summer and winter that vary from 105 to -30 F respectively. The average temperatures range from 74 in July, to 21 F in January. The normal precipitation for the year averages 19 inches.

South Dakota does experience some very extreme temperatures. I don't think it gets as hot in the summer in Pine Ridge as the eastern part of the state (where I live) because of the Black Hills, but it definitely gets colder! Their winter lasts longer--starting earlier (sometimes snow is first seen in late September!!) and ends later. :wbrr

Having lived in SD all of my life, I can definitely testify that those on the reservations definitely need help. And just FTR, Casinos only do so much in a conservative state with 750,000 people ;)

I got a letter from one of my elders yesterday, she's a grandmother looking after 8 grandchildren all of which have been abandoned by their parents (her words, not mine). My heart just goes out to her, I don't know how she does it. I had sent her some buttons in her December package which her sister really liked. Apparently in her culture if someone admires something you have it is customary to give it to them. So I'll be sending a LOT of buttons in her January package and some hats for all those grandchildren.

I absolutely love being involved, even in a small way, with these people's lives. Sponsoring an elder is the smartest thing I've ever done and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Okay I'm feeling almost alive today... I thought I'd add a picture so you all can see what they look like; a couple people mentioned slipper socks, and I thought these would be good.

I wonder if you could list the 8 Reservations. Might be interests in others beyond Pine Ridge as well?

This is the link to Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation, someone posted this I think in another thread a couple of days ago. While you're stitching you can eat Campbells soup and saving those labels can be of help, as well as General Mills Box tops. Many many options listed with lots of addresses of items needed. They apparently list an item a week they're super in need of. Magnetic letters are listed currently.

http://friendsofpineridgereservation.org/

They do mention in a couple of places 2 addresses, one if you're mailing US mail and one if you're UPS or Fed Xing. They also suggest confirmation if you use US mail.

I don't have the paper with me - but I went through and looked up the locations of the counties - before I posted and 8 were on native american reservation in South Dakota and two were in Arisona/New Mexico. I just finished sending off my monthly letter for my elder - it is so exciting to know that you can personally help and give directly to a family in need - rather than through a big organization, we truely can help change the world on person at a time.

LOL! I forgot about that! Yes, if someone says they like something you have, you are obligated to give it to them...unless it was a gift. I had made a stunning dance shawl and one of the other dancers, forgetting, said how much they liked the shawl. Well, to this day she is wearing it and not me...lol! Had I been gifted it by someone, I would not have been obligated to give it to her.

I just stumbled on this thread. I have actually been to this area of the country. The living conditions are deplorable. There are actually some living in tents!! Being from the south, I don't have to deal too much with snow or severe cold--shoot it was 70 degrees today.

I echo the sentiments of an earlier poster--why does our country spend so much to help others but fail to look in our own back yard. Most get real generous during a disaster or around the holidays. But these people and many just like them need help every day of the year.

The people I came into contact with are a proud nation. They were forced to live on the reservation many years ago. They do not seek a hand out but a hand up.

I checked out the website too. So many things are needed. They have a laundry list. Their schools do not even have the books needed to educate their children. They actually have links to patterns for requested crafted items to help you make your decision.

Here locally, I tend to troll our thrift stores looking for suitable items at resonable prices to donate to our local homeless shelters, I'll just add this cause to my list of donations. I've even found some wonderful afghans that I usually donate to the humane society. I'll start picking the best ones to send here.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I have a quick question for anyone who knows the answer :D

This week is the anniversary of my nephew's stillbirth. I like to honor him by donating something in his name. I saw this thread and decided to send things to Pine Ridge this year. Would it be a good or a bad idea to include a note that it's "donated in the memory of . . . "? I can easily leave it out of course and just let his mother know it was done so she knows we're still thinking of him.

So far I have one finished and another one almost done. I want to do some in other colors, too. If anyone is interested the pattern can be found here: Tri-Color Cloche. (http://www.caron.com/projects/ss/cloche.html) I posted this under 'Accesories'; but thought I'd share it here, too... since this is what I am making it for. This past week has not been nice here in the North Country temperatures dropped back down - below zero and with it came the snows. But the worst is to come - our heaviest snow month is generally March and honestly it is not warm enough to turn off the furnaces until late May - and we don't set tomatoes out in the garden until the first week of June. So while spring may be coming to the rest of the country it has not hit here yet! Lol:eek

Please encourage people you know to come and join us in this mission - remember you do not have to be a crocheter - you can sponsor an elder and send little care packages of crackers and mac and cheese - maybe a pair of mittens - maybe you can use a scissors and make the quilts that don't need sewing - or post a message on your local free cycle that you are asking for mittens and such - each and every single item is a help

Hi everyone. I don't know if anyone is still making hats or scarves, but I thought I'd share a scarf pattern I made up to go with a free online hat pattern. You can find it on my pattern blog (http://tinascrochetpage.blogspot.com/2006/02/another-scarf-pattern-with-no-name.html). Also, Patty made up a scarf to go with this hat that is straight along the edges. (I think I like hers better! :) ) It's here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=23438). I made a hat and scarf for my elder. I already posted the hat picture, but here it is with the scarf. :D

The above has really cured me of complaining about heating costs. I am still making hats and scarves. I understand it stays cold in S.D. pretty far into the spring. For those not familiar with Midwest weather, even in Chicago spring doesn't really start until April and where I went to college in Minnesota it's even later sometimes.

Here is some more info:

January is the coldest month, with average temperatures ranging from 10 degrees in the east to 14 degrees in the west.

http://worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/dotclear.gif July is the warmest month, with average temperatures ranging from 69 degrees in the east to 64 degrees in the west.
http://worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/dotclear.gif
http://worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/dotclear.gif South Dakota does have occasional days with high temperatures near 90 degrees, and harsh winter temperatures (way below 0 degrees) are normal.

I received a letter from my elder today and that is always so exciting for my family - now I must tell you I sponsor 4 elders and I have only had the one that has written me and she has written twice - I know the packages are received as I do a confirmation - and I do not expect a letter back - as that is not why my family sponsors - but when you do get a letter it is pretty exciting and I thought I would share a little of what she wrote - I sponsor a grand ma who is raising her grand kids - the baby is doing good, He'll take a couple of steps on his own but hasn't really learned to walk yet, but he is practicing. Every thing you have sent fits perfectly and is so very much appreciated, I am so glad to have you as my new friend............... wow talk about an emotional high. Now some of the elders do not speak English, and other do not read and write so I was surprised to get this letter - I always send along stationary and envelopes in case they can write back - but I know the postage will be used for necessary things so I don't worry if I do not hear - thank you for letting me be a part of this program - Miss Kitty

Miss Kitty- That is awesome! I, too, send stationery in hopes that they will decide to write back. (I sponsor two elders now.) But I haven't heard from anyone yet. That is so exciting! I would be excited, too. I am still making hats and scarves and slippers, and have an afghan started, but it will probably not be done til this fall, the way I have been going on it. Anyway here is another hat I finished just this morning:

It is the same Tri-Color cloche (http://www.caron.com/projects/ss/cloche.html)I posted earlier, but I did the colors like Pattys' (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22922)hat. I see Crochetfun (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22348) did one of these, too in pink and brown. It's a popular hat! It goes quick is probably why. I like doing the two contrasting color stripes on the bottom even better, it's a lot easier than changing colors every single row... (The colors are off-white/aran and a rusty brown; it looks black, but it is brown.)
Thanks for looking!

It does sound very rough. I knit a hat, my first and only completed knit project, and now I can't find it! :( I looked everywhere for it. I think I must have thrown it away when I was doing a hurried cleaning. So I just sent the gloves I bought on sale and a coat I was given but never really wore, yesterday. I hope someone can get some use out of them soon.

Someone is giving me a new coat for our nine year old, and when he gets that one I will wash his and send it as it is about two inches too short in the sleeves! :lol But still in nice condition. We are getting hit with snow and cooooold here, the worst ever all winter. :wcold I am making granny squares, and a scrap granny afghan for one of my elders right now. I also have an 8" square my secret pal sent me, (thank you secret pal!) :D and one I made to go with it, to send out, and a 13" oddball square to send out. Every little bit helps, right? :hook

Here is a poncho I finished, for one of my elders' grand daughters' that she is raising. I hope to make a matching one and send it, with a Barbie doll for her, too. They work up fast and are good for warmer spring weather, when there is still a chill in the air.

Now that I have a car again I can go shopping more often during the day and get up to the post office if it's nice out or not! :)

MSNBC NEWS Snow closes highways in Dakotas (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12386515/from/RSS/)

Up to 2 feet of blowing snow closed major highways on the northwestern Plains on Wednesday. The storm caused widespread power outages and was blamed for at least three deaths. A large part of the reservation is without power and may not have it restored for 24 to 48 hours.

Wow we are seeing Spring and the reservation the poorest of the poor are still suffering through the cold and terrors of freezing weather! Please continue to help in any way you can - Ms Kitty.

Hello everyone,
Being fairly new to this group i have been looking around and reading alot of the back posts and such like that and have noticed alot of talk about Rine Ridge in SD. I'm the project leader for the Pine Ridge childrens program and like Rosa said in one of her post the tempatures are reaching well above the 100's and some have no running water at all, Now for some of you that don't know me, I grew up On Pine Ridge for the first 15 years of my life, so i know how this feels to have no water, no power, and no way to escape the heat.. We have fiqured a way to help them stay warm, not if it was as easy to help them stay cool :( Maybe someday we will be able to work that.
One thing that we are doing is School starts Aug 14th at Pine Ridge, so we are doing a school supply drive, with your basic school supplies, pencils, crayons, glue, markers, such like that Now one of the ladies on Crafting for a cause her group of angels is making back packs, that they are selling for $4.00 i belive, Once they are ordered they are sending them to Pine Ridge where they will be filled with the school supplies so atleast some of the kids will be able to start school with everything they need :)
the Backpacks are being made out of girl and boy material barbie and camfoughle(sp) i belive.... if anyone is intersted in helping with this let me know and I'm then happy to tell you anything and everything i know :).... my kids always call me a Know it all so i might as well act like it:clap .
I look forward to hearing from everyone

I had such fun last year shopping for school supplies! It's been a while since my kids needed any, but I was able to send a few kids off to school with the basics, at least. My daughter, 20, had a blast with it too. Reminded her of when she was that age.

Right now many stores are starting their school supply sales, so if you can, please send something to help these kids get started on a great year in school.

Saula- Do you pay for the backpack via paypal, then it gets shipped to PR from you? Just curious how that works.... I would love to sew a backpack, but... 1. My sewing machine is broken, and 2. I have never sewn a backpack. So, this would be my next best thing... :P I heard you have Barbie backpacks?!

WalMart here has crayons 10c a pack right now, other school supplies really cheap, too. I saw two packs of lined paper for $1, too, at King Soopers. :clap

Dewbaby, I'm the project leader for PR Elders. Please know that each items you CAN make and send is worth more than you can ever imagine. I don't care if it's a hat, a washcloth, or a package of pencils! The love that it brings and the encouragement that the sun really IS shining is worth a hundred times more. Not one of us can change everything there...or anywhere for that matter. But when each of us does what we can, when we can and it is done in love, compassion and understanding, we make a difference. Though each of us make only a small impact, on the whole, it creates a landslide.

Hi there I am part of CFAC too and am having so much fun - I have a group of kids working on making book bags right now - we just finished number 63! they are made of fabric reversible, and have back straps. If you would like a book bag to send with your school supplies or if you would like to help send book packs to the kids at Pine ridge you are welcome to pitch in we ask a suggested among of $3 per book bag - but hey every penny helps get them there - just sent a donation to cfac_group@yahoo.com through pay pal (note there is an underline in that name!) and put in the notes for book bags for Pine ridge, if we know that others out there are willing to help us we will keep right on making - remember that CFAC is a non-profit so keep your receipt.

Hello DewBaby,
I'm Saula with CFAC, I'm the Project leader for Pine Ridge childrens, and please don't feel over whelmed, We all understand how life is and sometimes things in life just don't go the way we plan for them to. Money is tight for alot of people, I'll tell you what one member does, she has been making hats and scarves all year long and just putting them into a box and once the box gets full she said she will mail it, but this way she doesn't feel pressured to rush and can work with her life and money, so when she isn;t making her hats and such, she is helping me out on doing some research on the internet for the different charities and such... trust me We have alot of areas, that we need some help with and it doesn't cost a dime just a little time on the computer. So if you ever do start to feel overwhelmed give me a shout and i can snap ya out of it real quick :)
For everyone else I want to Thank everyone our School supply drive is doing great, there are still some Book bags left The kids are going to be so happy to see their supplies and book bags, you all have made a bunch of kids very happy, not to menation how happy the angels where that made them.
If anyone has any questions or anything just give me a shout, and Dewbaby i look forward to hearing more about you on CFAC :)

I'm ordering 3 book bags today. When we went to do my son's school supply shopping we just bought 4 of everything we got...1 for him and 3 for Pine Ridge. Lots of stuff was 2/$1 so it rounded it out very nicely!:lol We picked up folders, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, glue, rulers and those stretchy book covers. I remember covering my books in paper bags! Back then it was either that or those paper book covers...these are soooo much nicer! And reuseable! And to boot were only like 68 cents!

Also in my travels I found 1lb bags of mill end yarn at Big Lots. It was 100% acrylic and feels like it's Simply Soft. So I picked some up in rose, blue and white and are destined to become baby items for Pine Ridge. :-)

Someone on here posted a while back, about how they wished that we could do something to help them with the heat. I've never made one of the "cool neck ties" things, but I saw the pattern for them on a website that makes things for the military. Anyway, I've never made one, but I wondered if someone from Crafting for a Cause would think these would be helpful? You have to be able to put them in the freezer/refrigerator, and if they don't have electricity, these are probably not helpful... Just a thought.

those of us at crafting for a cause have finally been able to set up a small cottage project at Pine Ridge - helping my people help themselves. We have our first bead work - beaded earrings and they are available through the web store - www.crafting4acause.com (http://www.crafting4acause.com) come take a look they are lovely. We will be adding prayer bags, dream catchers, necklaces, bracelets, and buckskin dolls, we are so pleased to be able to help them in this way - please share with others if you can - all the monies go directly back to the crafts-person - and when you maybe only have an annual income of $2000 a month or less - an extra 40-50 a month from sales of your hand made items can make a huge difference. Please share with anyone you can thank you - Wild Kitty

I wanted to tell you about my elder - her name is Betty - she is in a wheel chair - because she has no legs - they had to be amputated due to diabetes - she is about the age of my mom - which is not really old - 50s - but is old for the reservation as most people only live to age 55 or so - isn't that sad - well Betty does not write us - but I do not get discouraged when I worry about her I call a neighbor and she checks on her for us. She is not able to really leave her house because the road is dirt and there is no sidewalk for her wheelchair, but she sent me a picture and she has a smile on her face. I don't really expect to hear from her - telephone lines and such are not good on the reservation - I send my things with a confirmation so that I know she receives them - and I do it because I want to help not because I need a thank you in return.

I know that Mira still has many elders needing a friend if you can write a letter once a month and send a small gifty or puffy once a month and do it in faith and love you will find it a rewarding experience. Simone

I would like to know though, if there is anything in particular that they need a lot of that our group could focus on? I love making afghans, and our group might do that, but anyway... Thanks so much for all you do!! :)

Was someone going to be doing something with yo-yos, too? :think I don't think I've ever even made a yo-yo... good thing for scrap yarn!

Hey Tina - You read correctly. For Oct and Nov we are going to put the squares aside and do some yo yo's. Keep you eyes on the CFAC board for more info to come.
