View Full Version : Teddy Bears

I did my first Teddy Bears. I took several (at least 5) different patterns, added some of my own imagination, and these are what I came up with. I made the brown on first, then the pink one.

Here is a picture of them standing up. Both the legs and arms move. (The brown bear has green eyes because I didn't have the right size black beads.)

Finally, to give you an idea about the size, they are holding the crochet hooks that made them.
I'm still perfecting the pattern, and want to make hats (both boy and girl) for them. Maybe these will be stocking stuffers at Christmas for family and friends.

The brown bear is done with worsted weith yarn and a size G hook. The pink bear is done in Caron Simply Soft with a size F hook. They are sewn together with button thread. Each took only one evening to complete.

Those are so cute! I've made a few animals over the years. But I have a bit of a problem getting their heads on straight so they all end up with a little head tilt. Your's are great though.

Thanks all, I really had fun making them.
Jake's Mom,
To get the arms and legs to move, I use a strong thread, like button/craft thread. No beginning knot is used. Instead, I leave a long beginning thread tail. Sew from one side of the body (where the leg would be) to the other side of the body, through the leg (with a very small stitch on the outside), then back through the body and through the other leg. I then tie the thread VERY tight using several knots. The knots are hidden between the leg and the body. The threads are ends of the threads are sewn into the body and cut so they are hidden. The arms are done the same way. I hope this makes sense.
It needs to be said that these are not toys for children to play with, they are for display only.

Thanks again all. They are really fun to make and I get to use up a lot of me scrap yarns.
MLLORF,
You asked about the patterns I used, well it's hard to say exactly. I found a pattern for a teddy head on the internet, then modified it some. The feet and legs were based on the patterns for the Pooh Characters I did a while back. The arms are just tubes with a dec on one side in the middle to give the elbow a little definition. The body is just an egg shape, still working on this part. Putting it together I used the doll making skills I learned in the 1980's when soft scuplture dolls were so popular. The ears are just circles folded in half and sewn on the head. I'm still not completely happy with the shape of the head and nose, so I'm still working on that part. I also want to put a tail on some of them.

How cute. I am working on a couple for my dd. She loves teddy bears. How did you attach the arms and legs.

Thanks Tanner.
To attach the arms and legs I used strong thread, such as button or hand quilting thread doubled on a long doll making needle. I went in on one side of the body where a leg would go on, through the body and out the other side, where the other leg goes on. I went threw the leg then back through the body back to the other side and through the other leg, then through the body to the the top where the head goes. I took a big stitch in the head, then attached the arms the same way as the legs. All the knots should be hidden under the legs, arms or head.
If the teddy is larger, I sometimes attach the legs seperate from the head and arms.
I hope this makes since.
