My oldest daughter who lives in athen's ga just sent me a pic and she has her hair up in dreads now:eek. That beautiful long red hair in dreads:(. She wants me to make her a tam:think for christmas. Which for us is Dec 7 since she has to work and the only time we could afford the airplane ticket. I am searching the web. Any ideas?

A tam is a loose fitting hat that you might envision Bob Marley wearing. This website has some great pictures of ones that you could buy:

As you can see from the pictures, all of them are crocheted.
Here are some websites that have free patterns that will give you the idea:

This seems like a quick and easy project. I hope that you get one finished in time!!!

I'm not a mother, so please don't egg me too bad for saying this, but its just hair. It can EASILY be removed or cut and regrown out when she tires of the dreads. Much much better than a tattoo or a piercing. (I have a client whos granddaughter went off to college, died her BLOND hair jet BLACK! and got her brow pierced. They didn't make too much of a fuss about it to her, even though it horrified the grandmother. She has since gone back to her natural hair color and removed the piercing. its just a stage shes at). :)

I agree with Eyrthmother. It's just hair.
I would make a little Amigurumi doll with red dreds to give her. That way when this phase is over she will have the doll to remind her and laugh about her free spirited choices that she made when she was young and on her own!
Take LOTS of pictures when you are together. They will come in handy when she has a daughter of her own!

I'm sure she looks great in her new do. And when you get the hat done for her she'll love it. In later years she'll love seeing a picture of herself in the dreads, and tam.

Search on CPC for "rasta" and 3 different hats meant for dredlocks will come up. I like the looks of these two - the 2nd one is by a C'ville member!

I had dreads in college, they rock and I miss them, If I wasn't super busy all the time I would totally go have them done, but they are a lot of work to get started.
I had a really good friend (male) who also had dreads and his hair was very red, it looked great.
In the end hair grows back, and you never know, you might think its adorable.
i second the bythehook rasta hat, i have made it and the pattern was super simple to follow.

Don't feel bad, my daughter shaved her head. It was in the dead of winter time. I wish she would have worn a hat. But NO. Love is a strong thing. So don't let it get you down. Have a great visit.

Thank you ladies for your support on this. I know it is just hair, but she has beautiful long red naturally curly:thair<like a spiral perm hair> hair that I would love to have. She is such a naturalist and simple person, that it does and yet doesn't surprise me. She called me at 1am and said "Its done mom" Took the lady 4 hrs to dread her hair.
Sent her the link to the second hat, which is the one she choose.:clapWas working on it last night. A special bunnie:rabbitwas helping me figure out what I had done wrong. I was doing fine till I came upon the ldc row:think and after I read the toturial on it, I did the row, but the next row seemed to have gotten smaller. Not sure what I did wrong. Now that my work is done today, I am going to try it again. I have done:2frogit. If anyone has any suggesstions on the pattern, let me know. PC will be on tonight

I have a little red haired girl as well. She dreaded her beautiful long red hair and kept it like that for nine months.:thinkLittle red heads just don't look right with dreads. She also added beads and little bits of string and yarn.
Then she was done with it. We soaked her head in hair conditioner overnight and it took three days to get it out. We filled a bag with it. I made her a few tams and the one she liked the best had a peace sign on top and was tan and brown.:)
I know how you feel and you will get used to it but when we would shop or go out together of people would look at her funny and she would get mad and ask me why are they staring at me.:blush
Since then two years ago, she is now platinum blond with hot pink bangs three tatoos quit college and is in love:yay
I don't think I'll get empty nest syndrome.

Hi Christina. I know you're upset but I hope like others have said, just go with the flow and be glad it's nothing serious. It could be so much worse, like an illness, etc. It's just hair; there's certainly worse in the world. My head has been shaved several times for brain surgeries so my perspective has really changed. It'll be ok--really. :) Happy crocheting!
