First of all, I want to say how happy I am to have found a crochet forum!:cheer
Ok, so right now I'm going crazy trying to find a free crochet pattern for a sweater for my mom. She has pointed out a knitted sweater that had a braided pattern down the front. I blieve they are called cables in knit, but I can't knit for the life of me. Does anyone know if I can achieve the same look in crochet and if there is a pattern?
Thanks!

Hello and welcome!
You will find tons of free patterns at CPC for just about anything you want:
http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php
As for the sweater, yes they are cable and yes you can get that look in crochet.
Here is one:

Another:

You might find a few more in this section:

Free Patterns also has well free patterns. You'll have to sign up to get them but I believe you can look around:

Thanks!
I've scoured both those sites already. They're the first I go to! Have you seen any patterns that aren't quite so bulky? Or do you know of any good books?

There is a great pattern in Family Circle Easy Crochet 50 Fashion and Home Projects. It's called Aran Artistry (http://books.google.com/books?id=LhlzRJeky9cC&pg=PA18&lpg=PA18&dq=%22aran+artistry%22+gail+diven&source=bl&ots=alYZuLVqVY&sig=DIIdW4Fds7HkzeqQkdQAD05peuQ&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result#PPA19,M1). It has a slightly ribbed neck and different cable patterns. There are popcorns, cables, and diamonds with popcorns in them. The pattern is even on the sleeves. I love that the sweater doesn't have ribbing on the sleeves or hem. It was originally published in Easy Knitting magazine.

I just picked up my mail about 10 minutes ago. There is a pattern in the new issue of Crochet Today that is similar to what you're describing.

Thanks you guys! Do you know where I can get that magazine? I've never seen any crochet mags at my usual stores, saddly. It makes it hard to decide which one I want to subscribe to when I can't rifle through them.

http://www.crochettoday.com/ first row, right, shows a pattern for a cabled bolero, uses DK weight yarn (in the Jan-Feb '09 issue). I can't see online where you can order just one issue, however, just subscribe.

Thanks, that one is really cute. It has just the type I'm looking for, though I'd have to add long sleeves. However, I've been to a bunch of craft and book stores and no one has it! In fact, nobody had any patterns for crocheted sweaters. I can't believe it. I got some books at the library, luckily, but none of them have the same cable look. It looks like I may have to learn to knit or just buy one!

After February, you should be able to get it from the company as a back issue.

Jane Sneeden Peever has written 2 books, Crocheted Aran Sweaters and More Crocheted Aran Sweaters; you might see if your library has them or can get them for you through interlibrary loan.

The new issue Crochet Today magazine should be on the shelf next week sometime. Try Michaels or Joann .

Welcome to our wonderful site. I am making a sweater from her second book More Crocheted Aran Sweaters and so far it is turning out great. There are a lot of nice sweater patterns in the book. I found my book at Half Price books, can't remember how much.

I found those books on Amazon and they look great. Hopefully I'll be able to buy them at some point, as none of the libraries here have them. I have yet to find out about interlibrary loan, though. I have no idea how long it's going to take me to make a sweater, but it sure is taking forever to find one. I may just give it to my mom for her birthday next year instead of this Christmas!
Thanks everyone, for your help. It's so great to have found a forum full of crocheters like me!
