I'm in! Anyone else shopping for yarn? I've used Caron Country and it's wonderful but not always in stock at my local store.

This will be a great class to teach. I will be looking forward to getting to know all my students, and hope you enjoy the crochet-a-long with me.

about what size button. I have one that I think might work. At least I hope so.
LisaG
January 7, 2009, 04:17 PM
The button size can be from 1/2 to 1 inch, or even a little larger. The button hole will be a chain 3 size, but it can be worked smaller or larger easily.

Thanks Lisa
I will have to check and see what my button size is. Hopefully it will work.

FYI-My Joanne's had all Caron Yarns 25% off yesterday. I found the new Caron yarn on a end cap in the sewing machine/ribbon section of the store. I also saw it available online from Annie's Attic. I think I'm going to make my sweater in Claret or Foilage. Happy shopping!

Would this class be appropriate for someone who's never made a garment of any type before (at least not anything with sleeves!)? I successfully completed the bottom up pineapple shawl class last year -- that's about as complex of a wearable that I've ever done.
Thanks for any advice!
LisaG

If you made a pineapple shawl, you shouldn’t have any problems with the jacket. You just have to follow the instructions and I’m here to help out with any questions.

Well I just measured the button I have and it is just a bit under 2 inches so. I think I am going to need a different button.
The button size can be from 1/2 to 1 inch, or even a little larger. The button hole will be a chain 3 size, but it can be worked smaller or larger easily.
LisaG
January 9, 2009, 10:28 AM
The Yoke rib measures 1.75", so the 2" button is a little bit to big for it.
dilyca2006
January 9, 2009, 11:15 AM
I figured this button would be to big. That's ok. I will get another one. I am trying to decide if I want to get a wooden button like this one is or get something that might match my yarn.

I plan to use Skacel Solista 70% silk/30% nylon. It appears to be medium weight. Is this an acceptable substitute?
LisaG
January 10, 2009, 02:41 PM
I just checked the specifications for the yarn and it's a heavy weight yarn. Please crochet a swatch 16 dc = 4"/10cm and 8 rows, and let me know how it works out.

Hi, Lisa!
I fell in love with this project when I first saw the announcement for the class. I'm having surgery on my knee two days before the class begins, and I'll probably be on the couch for at least the next week (although I have heard that it could be up to 4 weeks.) I'm sure that I'll be crocheting while I'm recuperating, but I am concerned about missing the first couple of days of class. Class starts on Friday, and I may not feel well until Tuesday or Wednesday of the next week. Do you think that I will fall too far behind?
Thanks very much!!!!
LisaG
January 11, 2009, 03:27 PM
I hope your surgery is going well and you can join the class shortly after.
Since this is a CAL (crochet-a-long) class, so it's o.k. with me if you want to start later, and I think you have enough time to catch up with us. We're working on rows 1-23 (24, 25) for week 1 and 2.

January 12, 2009, 02:33 PM
OOPS, my mistake! Wrong yarn name. It is Skacel Contrasto and I'm getting 16 stitches to 4". It will look real pretty and drape fine in a sweater.

LisaG, about what time tomorrow are you posting the class material? And will it be in a PDF or word file? Or are you possibly going to email the information?
I want to make plans for tomorrow...whether or not I can print out the class material from my computer at work, or must I wait until I get home. I cannot assess my email from work, nor can I download some files.
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 10:46 AM
I'll post only the first part for the pattern. I'll post it to the thread and also email it to everyone in a PDF file, at 8.00 a.m. central time.

It's beautiful and I think it will go with my yarn wonderfully.
I am planning on stash busting with this project. I have quite a few skeins of RHSS in Dusty Teal. I am doing a swatch right now. I saw earlier that 16 SC and 8 rows should make 4 inches is that correct... While we have you here!!!LOL
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 11:20 AM
I'm planing to be here all morning!!! So just go ahead make a swatch and see how it works out.
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 11:25 AM
I was checking the yarn index and it's a heavy weight yarn. But since your gauge works out with 16 sts/4" is great.
dilyca2006
January 15, 2009, 11:28 AM
Well. with an I hook... 16 DC and 8 rows measured 5 inches.
dilyca2006
January 15, 2009, 11:30 AM
I'm going to eat breakfast and have a cup of coffee and then I will do a swatch with an H hook to see what goes there.
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 11:40 AM
In what size do you want to crochet the jacket?
dilyca2006
January 15, 2009, 11:43 AM
Well. I'm not a small girl. I just did a quick measure and I would say whatever size would accomodate 42 inch bust. That is with a t-shirt and sweatshirt on. I do, however, like my cloths to fit loose. So. whatever size that would be. XL or so.
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 11:50 AM
Give me 30 minutes - I want to take your gauge and see what size you have to crochet for your yarn.
dilyca2006
January 15, 2009, 11:51 AM
okie dokie.
my guage with an H hook was really no different then with an I and I struggle with going down to a G.
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 12:25 PM
Can you read a chart? If yes I would like for you do make a swatch according to the chart.
dilyca2006
January 15, 2009, 12:29 PM
I can give it a go and see what happens.
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 12:48 PM
Please try to make a swatch with your RHSS using I-9 hook. Work for 4 rows and let me know how many inches measures 1 Shell, ch 2, 4 dc.
Chain 25
Beginning Row: Sc in 2nd chain and in each chain across row – 24 sc.
Row 1: Ch 3, 3 dc; *sk 2 sc, 5 dc (= Shell) in next sc, ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts; rep from * 1 time more, turn – 2 Shells.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 3 dc; *sk 2 ch, Shell in next dc, ch 2, sk 4 dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc; rep from * 1 time more, turn.
Rep Row 2 for pattern.

Okie dokie Lisa. With this that you gave me it is 4 inches high and 8 inches long. Is this going to be ok??
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 02:22 PM
Could you also please measure: 1 Shell, ch 2, 4 dc = 1 pattern repeat.
dilyca2006
January 15, 2009, 02:25 PM
about 3 1/4 inches

January 15, 2009, 02:39 PM

cool. Maybe this will help someone else as well!!!
LisaG
January 15, 2009, 03:40 PM
If you would work up the Size XS/Small the jacket would be to small and in the next larger size to big. So I've to refigure the pattern for you with your RHSS.
The bottom measurements for the swing jacket would be around 66-68" like the size m/l.
dilyca2006
January 15, 2009, 03:42 PM
ok.
