Wow! I'd be very interested in taking this class...I've made topdown sweaters before, but wasn't 100% thrilled with the results. It would be nice to have some direction. :c9

I used to do what we called 'raglans' when I was younger, but to do it without a pattern would be pure delight for me. They seem to work up so much faster and without all those seams. I am definitely going to get in on this one.

I'm looking forward to this, too! I have the book and have attempted to do one of the sweaters, but I screwed up royally. It's just vile-looking. I'm hoping if I take the class I can get more direction on where I went wrong. :lol

Ohh I will try to remember to sign up on this one. I really want to make a cardigan! I can't ever find the perfect one at the store and most of the time I sit around in a jacket instead hehe.
How would I know how much yarn I need to pick up, is that covered at the start of class?

The teacher usually posts files that have the lesson on them. I'm not 100% sure if she'll do this one the same as the others or not. If she does, she'll post a PDF with the pattern/lesson. She'll check in at least once a day to answer any questions.

I just registered for this class. Yippee! I am excited. I took the Toe Up socks class from Karen and it was great. First time in 50+ years of crocheting that I was able to make socks that fit and were comfy too. So I know that this sweater will be spectacular.

What would you estimate the amount of yarn needed for a woman's large sweater? In worsted weight.

It is going to vary depending on what stitch pattern you decide to use.. but I am going to guestimate 16 - 30 oz....
I know that is a wide range.. but I cant give yardage because I dont know you stitch gauge or what pattern you plan to use.
You will be working on a custom pattern.. you get to chose it all!

Tough time of year, since we all will be working on Christmas presents. However, I'll be finishing my DGD's first birthday present the week before, and I'm hoping to get most of my DD's afghan done before class begins. :sheepxmas
I really wanted to take time out for this class though. I've tried a few top down sweaters on my own, and I've had no success. :angry I even tried making one for my DGD, and that was a failure.:yell
I'm going to need a lot of hand-holding. :hugEither that, or a lot of help.:help
JoviMom
October 17, 2009, 11:48 PM
That is what the class is for! :) I am there to help.. ask questions, hand hold... hug.. cheer and generally make sure you can complete your sweater! You dont have to make a full size sweater if you dont want to. I actually do recommend you make a child size one for the class so that you arent totally overwhelmed. Unless of course you dont have a child you can give it too.
Though you could give it to charity I suppose :)

Thanks. :c9 I'll probably go ahead and make it for DGD for a winter sweater. Then (if all goes well), I'll make one for me after the holidays.
Last year, I tried making a sweater for her, however that turned out to be a disaster as well. :bang I couldn't adjust the head opening.
Aren't babies's heads bigger in proportion to the rest of their bodies?
Also, wouldn't we have to take measurements? (This will be a pain measuring my squriming DGD.) Or do we take measurements of a sweater their size? Or that something that has to wait until class?:ohdear

We will be talking about taking measurements in class and How to do so. There isnt a whole lot you need to take.. so it should work out just fine even with a squirming DGD! :) and you have a choice to make a cardigan or a pullover.. so that will help too!

Hi Karen,
I'm back for another class. This one is really important to me as I have not tackled a "fitted" crochet wearable for myself, ever. Lots of afghans, shawls, socks but not a crocheted sweater though I have knit a few. Top down just makes so much more sense in my mind's eye when it comes to fitting. This one's for me.

I'm sort of on the fence as to taking this class, as I'm going to have to figure out how much yarn I can afford...One thought was to make a sweater as a present-- that way, I can justify the price!
How much yarn are we going to need for the sweater? I'm thinking of making an Extra Large.

It is really going to depend on what stitch pattern you are going to do. Since we really aren't doing "sizes" but customizing as we go.. it can vary greatly. but on average.. 16-30 oz is a good range.

Karen, I'm really looking forward to this. Once again, I will be going out of town for three days on the day class starts. Will try and print info before I leave and take my project bag with me. We have family coming from out of town and the two MIL's are being treated to a weekend near Seaside, OR. Knowing the coast it will probably be rainy, cold and windy but that is good weather for crocheting. The other MIL crochets as well so I'll have a good time no matter what.

That is great! I love the OR coast. I am actually thinking about having a crochet Retreat in Cannon Beach OR in 2011. My cousin has a Beach house there and it is GREAT for a Retreat the way it is set up! :)

Karen is on Pacific Standard time as she lives north of Seattle, Washington. If I remember correctly from previous classes she usually has lessons up by 8:00am our time, sometimes earlier.
I too am anxious and hope to download first part before leaving for the weekend. I'll be up checking quite early while as I pack the van. Other than socks (working on my third pair thanks to her class) and a shawl or two, this will be my first "sweater" just for me! I'm so excited.

I can't wait. Unfortunately, I'll be at work, so I don't think I'll be able to check until I get home at 4:30 ET. Gonna be a long day at work.
However, after Saturday, I'm off for four straight days. A lot of good crochet time.
I'm almost done with my eldest daughter's Christmas present (an afghan), so I'll be working on both that and Karen's project.
