View Full Version : [Ended] Snowflakes in July Along

Julie
July 1, 2005, 10:37 AM
I have been thinking about choosing a week to do nothing but snowflakes each and every day. Seven days of snowflake goodness. I'd like to have as many flakes as possible available when December rolls around, for gifts, for me, for Christmas cards. Then I started thinking, wouldn't it be fun to have other people doing snowflakes with me during that week? I love Snowflake Mondays to see people making a beautiful flake here and there. It would be much more fun if more of my friends and new friends would make snowflakes too.

Here is the plan:

The week of July 25th, the last week of July, we will make nothing but snowflakes. Making it the last week of the month gives plenty of time for you to get your affairs in order. Finish those WIPs you've been diligently stitching away on; get those last minute gifts finished. Three whole weeks to get ready for one week of flakes.
Snowflakes can be crocheted or knit, can be actual snowflakes, snowflake doilies or even a snowflake afghan.
Only snowflake-y items can be worked on during the week. No fair cheating!
I'll make a webpage showing everyone who is making snowflakes, with a running tally of how many each of us made and the group together.
I made a pretty button to tempt you:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a285/withahook/sija.gif

So, who's in? It's only one week, you know you can do it!

So far, 41 people have decided to make nothing but snowflakes the week of July 25th. :dance

I've been planning to try snowflakes anyway. This seems a good excuse to start them sooner than I planned. Count me in. Plus we're only 3 months from snow up here...

Count me in; I've wanted to do snowflakes for my tree and for package decorations and I'd probably never make the time to do it between everything else. This gives me time to pick out some patterns and pick up some thread, and a definite timetable to get it done!

Yes, count me in on this one. I am totally new to crocheted ornament. Just found some patterns today that I want to try. I am in a ornament exchange that last all year too, just joined. This will give me an opportunity to get some snowflakes made for the exchange, great.
Will you be sending out an email to let everyone know when you get the website up and running?

Cool cool cool! I've got family coming in from out of town tomorrow so it will be sometime in the next week for a website. Since the CAL officially is only for that one week I feel I've got a little time to play. :lol I'm really glad you're all signing up!

Oohhh! Count me in! I always decorate my Christmas tree in white paper snowflakes, but this year I decided to crochet snowflakes, so a few weeks ago I picked up LA's "White Christmas in Thread Crochet." Don't know how good I'll be at it, but I'd love to try it and see if I really can. And if I need enough for a whole Christmas tree, I'd better start now! What a great idea!! Patty

I would cheat so I can't do it.:rofl I would be picking up something else and working on it to. Sounds like fun though. Like my doily for the swap or a pretty dress or something for the baby.

Oh Julie! I have been planning and planning every year to make enough snowflakes each year and every year I end up making a measly 10 or 15 :( So yes I would love to dedicate one week to making snowflakes !!! Does it matter that I have a few unfinished cals? lol:) PLease put me down for this cal!!!:D

You're in of course Vims! Since this is only a one week CAL you can feel guilt free at having other CALs and projects waiting until it's over. And a week should get you those 10 or 15 snowflakes with no problem. :clap

Count me in on this CAL! :clap

I am really excited about this - for those who do not know me that well, I always try to do something new on my birthday, and since it falls at the begining of this CAL week, making crochet snowflakes will be my new "thing" for this year! Last year I tried sushi and the year before that I took some salsa dance lessons! I am a relatively slow crocheter, so no promises for a great number of snowflakes, but I should have fun trying the few that I do complete!

Is there a quota we have to "fill"?

I'm not TOUCHING these until the "official" Snowflakes in July time of the last week of July ... toooo much else I have to do! Plus that gives me time to buy steel hooks and thread, since I haven't done thread work in so long I no longer have them, and to find some patterns :) I'm hoping to make at least one flake a day, maybe more depending on my schedule; if I don't, hey, whatever I DO make is more than I would have otherwise :)

I am updating the list of names, if I missed you by some chance please let me know. :)

Questions: :think

Do we have to do one every day?

No quota to fill, the goal is just to get as many done in one week as you personally can. We're just going to be here to cheer you on is all. You don't necessarily have to do one every day, but the idea is to only work on snowflakes for that week. That way you have a guilt free requirement to make snowflakes ("Well, I should be finishing this WIP but I HAVE to make snowflakes. Julie said!!") :D

Back to the list. :)

Kimberly
July 10, 2005, 10:53 AM
I've set a goal for myself of doing one per day during that week. I am cat sitting a friends cat again, and I am not sure how much crocheting I will be able to get to....last time I had him he eyed my yarn the whole time with a mischevious glint in those eyes....I think he was being good to soften me up for his next attack...err...stay! :D

We are not limited to just white are we??? I bought in Germany some custom made red thread that has red lurex going through it, and I would love to use that for my snow flakes....artistic liscense and all that jazz....plus the only white I have right now is still staind pink from some liquid soap that got on it.....I really need to get that taken care of *sigh*

It's so hard to make out the colors online--- any idea which would look best with white thread? Maybe something that would be iradescent, but not to overwhelming? I would like to use it with future snowflakes first, then maybe move on to some colors...

Any ideas?

Julie
July 25, 2005, 10:46 PM
The iridescent (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8181800319&category=71221) is the best I think by far for snowflakes. I've bought the clear, pearl and iridescent and like that one the best. Don't be thrown by the photo, it's not a great one, but the Lurex is. Plus, it blends really well with other pastel colors too, so it isn't as if you would only use it with white.

Great work on the snowflakes!! I promise to get some done tonight after work! I was a little bit preoccupied yesterday! :) I've decided to do some in a peach thread I have to go on my mum's Christmas tree (this years theme is Peach and Teal - its a two tree household - a formal fancy one by mom for the front window and a 14 foot mish mash of colors in the family room by Dad!) As well as some of the red thread with lurex for gift tags! But first I have a day of work to get through...is it time to go home yet????? :lol

Well, yesterday I got 3 done and one about halfway, and I'll get some pictures posted later today. When I joined this CAL I had nothing scheduled for this week, but doesn't life just have a way of throwing us curves! It's going to be a busy week for me so I'm going to aim for 2 a day I think, to use as package toppers. I'm so envious of you ladies and your lurex though! I looked for any sparkly thread or lurex here, but once again Norfolk's reputation as the crafts wasteland holds up. Next time, though, I'll know to order in advance!

:flake Wow, you guys are doing great!! Today we are going to Sam's Club which isn't noteworthy - but the hour long drive in each direction is. I normally take something to work on in the car but don't know that snowflakes are going to work with all that bouncing. Little hook, tiny thread? I'll be gone for most of the day but will try to come up with something snowflake oriented for the ride if I can. If not, I will be clutching thread and hook and trying not to get too irritated. :flake

Wow! Those photos are beautiful! Everyone's got so much done already and I feel terrible. I started my first snowflake last night (no. 12 in the White Treasures pattern book), got to the fourth and final round, and realized that round wasn't coming out right. I frogged it, made dinner, and had just started it again when a friend of mine unexpectedly showed up. I'd talked to her over the weekend, and had told her that my mom had taught me to knit while she was here earlier this month, but that a mutual friend, T, had seen me practicing and told me it was all wrong! So my friend M stopped by after work to help me out. Well, I couldn't refuse her offer of help, and I figured knitting wasn't crocheting, so I wasn't really cheating on the CAL. :blush Anyway, turns out my mom, who taught herself to knit, does it completely backwards, so she's working on the inside instead of the outside of the item, although it looks the same in the end. So I spent several hours with M relearning how to knit and purl (I still like crochet much better, but thought it was good for me to learn to do this). I will go back to my snowflake tonight and try to finish it and another one.

I agree, this is harder than I thought! I guess I got cocky after that bookmark swap, when I though, hey, this thread work isn't that bad. Hah! I thought the first large snowflake in the book would be the easiest; I probably was wrong.

I got one done! After forgetting my crochet bag yesterday I wasn't sure if I'd get one finished since the house really needed cleaned, but I got hubby to do the dishes and I did the laundry and crocheted in between :hook

Photo here: http://daisywreath.net/gallery/thread/snowflake01
It's blurry. All my thread project photos are blurry, the camera just can't handle it. But you get the idea... Shame it didn't come out clearer, though. The "metallic" thread isn't so much metallic as it has an iridescent strand running through it--at home it was mostly pinkish or bluish, but here (brought it to work since didn't have time to photograph it at home) it sparkles green and blue instead.

Stacey, that is really lovely, well done!!

I ended up frogging and redoing 2 snowflakes that at least look like snowflakes now!! :cheer They looked like washcloths for a while!:eek

I'm trying another pattern tonight, so wish me luck. How do you stop them "frilling" at the edge and get them to lay flat? :think Or is it a case of stiffening them up later with starch or something? Sorry for being dense.

Thank you! :)

At first I was going to stiffen mine with starch, but I didn't think it'd be enough, and I remembered Julie talking about stiffening with glue. So I made a mixture of Elmer's glue and water (about half and half, but probably a little more water than glue) and soaked it in that, then blotted off the excess before I pinned it out.

I need to print out the snowflake blocking guide at the snowflake crochet site that someone linked to in this thread, too--I did this one by guessing if I had it lined up straight and it was hard to do that way!

Guess what? I've just finished a snowflake that looks like it should!! It was a Lion Brand wool-ease sport weight pattern and it looks great.:cheer

I have been working on Christmas decorations this last week any way. Last week, not this week. I have made a candy cane holder and 6 snow fakes and five round ball ornaments that I crocheted around the sation ball ornaments.
I have been doing only yarn but this will get me doing thread snow flakes.
Now I have to lay down Dot's pinapple poncho. Till next week.

I'm up to 3 finished and halfway through my fourth. I'm trying to get to ten before I go to bed tonight.

I totally agree with this -- I have silver and a handful of other colors, and I just prefer the iridescent so much that I (ahem) am only using it for snowflakes now. Plus for some reason I have an easier time working with it.

Alison

That's not dense at all. Snowflakes need to be blocked and stiffened (if you're going for the hang-it-on-the-tree type). They'll lay flat as a pancake once you block them out, and stiffening will insure that all their little arms are standing up as they should. :U

I thought the first large snowflake in the book would be the easiest; I probably was wrong.

Patty

Snowflakes aren't always created equal. Sometimes big is easy, sometimes not so much. I just do the ones that appeal to me when I am ready to make a snowflake. I give myself permission to cut and run if I'm not getting it too. There are tons of great patterns available that I refuse to allow myself to stress over one I'm not understanding.

My camera SO does not like close up pictures of anything. I really need a new digital camera :( But for those who enjoy blurry pictures, I've added a link in my sig for my flakes! I'm up to 6 done, one on the next to the last round that will be finished tonight. None of mine are blocked yet; I guess I need to have a block party tomorrow and get the finished ones blocked, or I'll have a huge job by the end of the week! My goal is 2 per day; I'm a little ahead so given everything else going on here, I'm happy.

And I second what Julie said about giving yourself permission to cut and run if a pattern just isn't working. I tried a pattern from the Martha Stewart site that just would NOT work for me. I don't know if I was having a particularly blonde moment or if it's poorly written or if it was a combination of both, but after I frogged the stupid thing the third time I moved on. Too many other pretty patterns out there to stress over one that isn't working out!

Well, I tried that pattern one more time last night, figured out half my problem but was still stuck, so I took Julie's advice, frogged it, and then made 2 and half little snowflakes! Yea!!:c9 The ends aren't woven in and I've never blocked anything, so I thought I'd just do them all at one time this weekend--I don't have either starch or white glue in my house. But maybe these little ones will help me figure out what the heck I was doing wrong with the big one.

I am having a blast with these! I bought 2 balls of white thread over the weekend (one Knit-Cro-Sheen, one white with pearlized threads), and still have quite a bit of the Sassy leftover from the bookmark swap, so I'm set.

I didn't bother to try to take photos of these little ones, since they're not completely done. Will probably wind up taking one photo of them all this Sunday. But please, everyone, post yours so I can drool! Patty

I'm still charting my major projects but I plan to make two of the snowflake (the pattern was posted by another member) coasters this afternoon. My biggest project is knitted,--I know it's a CAL but I remember reading it was ok if we used another medium--and is going to be an illusion snowflake scarf. I'm not pleased with my snowflake design yet. My second, is either going to be a motif scarf or my own coasters made from my daughter's snowflake cut-outs.

My goals for this crochet-along are seven snowflakes, none of them thread. I don't have anything against thread, I just plan to work a lot with it very soon and so I want this to be standard yarn. Plus, my crochet time is very stop-and-go lately and with the way my eyes are bothering me I'd rather do something I can see easier.

I've promised myself if I finish ten snowflakes--even if it's just ten potholders and coasters--that I will buy myself three balls of Imagine yarn by Lion Brand. It'll be my first time even touching ribbon yarn so I have quite the incentive. Plus, this is just fun; I haven't been able to join any local crafting groups and that's what swaps and CALs feel like to me.

Well, sorry for rambling, I just wanted to give ya'll my progress report. Also, I'm really enjoying reading about the snowflakes you all are making :)

Take care everyone

38 snowflakes? OMG! I am still up to... 1 1/2. Had every intention crocheting up a storm last night.... then the storm hit us..and we were w/out power for approx 8 hours. I couldn't see to crochet by lamplight.... so I have major catching up to do.

It is fun, it must admit. The illusion snowflake scarf sounds great. I think knitting is fun as well.

I am also using old patterns found in some workbasket magazines that I inherited. I even have book dating back to the year I was born (1963). It's funny to look at the old add's.....

I can't even conceive of 38 *lol* I'd have to have been crocheting nonstop morning to night since Monday to even come close to that number. Actually I'm not sure I could have even then ... it's been so long since I've done any thread work that I"m pitifully slow :( But! I'm up to 7 snowflakes, 1 snowflake bookmark (which I adore and plan to make several of) and 4 snowflake centers for hexagons for a snowflake afghan. Hi Jenn,

Nope, mine's not from Craftster, I'm still re-tooling my snowflake design to get it just right. Lol, most of my actual crocheting will probably take place tomorrow night and Saturday/mid-Sunday. I'll go take a looksie at Craftster and see if I can find the one posted there though. Are you colors heavily contrasted? I've noticed that the scarves that use very intense or bright colors seem to pop the most. How many motifs are you into it? I wonder if it isn't like some craft projects where you can see it from a distance but up close it's more of a jumble?...

I hope it works out :)

To everyone,

I saw one, but don't know how to get back there. I'll have to go to Map Quest. (They don't show you the back ways, though.) Anyway..... :cry Maybe I will get to work on some tomorrow....

Tina

Ugh on getting lost!! :hug

I don't believe any stores sell Lurex like we've been getting it. You can buy the little Kreinik spools of metallic thread which are the same or at the very least very similar. The main difference though is the cost. Ordering by the pound on eBay, which is where Jess and I and others have bought ours, is SO cheap!! A two pound cone of Lurex from Melanie (http://search.stores.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=lurex+thread&srchdesc=y&sid=12771232&store=Fiber+Options&colorid=5&fp=0&st=2&fsoo=1&fsop=1&submit=Search) (and other vendors) will run between $10 to $14 plus shipping. I'm not positive about the yards per pound, but it would just have to be in the 1,000+ ypp. Jess, do you have a better idea? So $3 or $4 for the little Kreinik spools (to try, sure), or a bargain with more Lurex than you will ever be able to use if you order online. Yeah, I'm pushing ordering online, but I wouldn't if I thought you would regret it. One spool may well last you years and years and years, imagine how many of those little spools you would have to buy to make up the difference?

I was completing a bookmark for a bookmark exchange over at Crochet List, and I incorporated snowflakes in mine! There was a "Christmas in July" theme for those who wanted to do a themed bookmark. A contest, too. You think mine will win? I sure hope so! I had fun thinking it up and making it. The patterns are not mine, but I took 5 patterns and made a bookmark with them!

Karla that is adorable!!! :clap Excellent job!!

Here are the nine snowflakes I made so far...

http://vhanna26.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/snow1.jpg

I used some size 10 and 5 gold and silver thread I had lying around, and the patterns are from the ASN Book, 101 Small Doilies (http://www.purplekittyyarns.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1268). it's not a snowflake book per se, but snowflakes to me are just small doilies anyway.

It's fun to work on these while the temperature here in Charleston hits triple digits.

Yeah, I think it must be over 1000 ypp. I haven't tried to do a measurement estimation yet -- it weighs so little I'd have to wind off a huge amount to get enough weight to estimate anything reasonable! :)

That said, if you can't order online, as Julie said above, the Kreinik spools are very similar, though the textures are slightly different. It works just fine, though.

I've seen the Kreinik spools (http://www.kreinik.com/kshop/home.php?cat=20) at AC Moore (mid-atlantic region only, I believe), Pacific Fabrics (PNW only, I believe), and at sewing/thread stores like the larger JoAnn's Fabrics and Hancock Fabrics (http://www.hancockfabrics.com/storelocator/storeandclasslocator.jsp). I've never seen them at Michaels, but my Michaels is awful (so is the JoAnn's it is right next door to).

The fabric shops might even have other metallic threads that you would be able to use, either by themselves or worked with the crochet thread you're using.

Sorry you got lost! Hope you can find some sparkley fun! :hug

Ooo! We have a Hancock Fabrics right down the road! I know I won't get lost going there! YAY! :clap I know where I'm going tomorrow... I think I might like to try a smaller spool, anyway, because I don't think I am going to make that many snowflakes. Maybe if I started planning my day around my crocheting, then I could get something done, huh? :lol "Uh.... I need to finish this snowflake first, then I can clean the bathroom, (let the dog out, feed the kids, let the dog in, do the laundry...." ( Don't we all wish?) :D

I love everyone's snowflakes! I am going to try some in gold, too. (I have some of that, already.)

Tina

Edited to say: Our JoAnns doesn't have anything either, I moved from a smaller town w/ a JoAnns that was HUGE, and had EVERYTHING. Here, a big city, the JoAnns has NOTHING. :think I can't figure that one out. (Guess I'll have to go back 'home', eh?) :D

WOW! Everyone's snowflakes are so gorgeous! I'm in awe! :nworthy And 3-D?!? :nworthy :nworthy :nworthy

I made one small snowflake last night and then decided to tackle that pattern that was giving me fits Monday night. Got it! Guess I just needed to step back for a while. But for some reason making snowflakes is bothering my left wrist, which I sprained May 29 (even though making the bookmarks last month didn't bother it all), so I only got those 2 done. More tonight, though.

Great job, everyone! There are quite a few really talented women in this CAL!

True conversation this evening:

Him: So I've been meaning to ask you, what the heck are you making anyway?
Me: <holding up snowflake> What does it look like?
Him: Hm. Um. Like, a snowflake?
Me: Yep!
Him: That's kinda cute actually.
Me: I made these too <shows him the other ones>
Him: I like that one .. and that one. And the big one. You know what, these would look really good on the Christmas tree!
Me: ....... Ya think?
Him: No, I'm serious!
Me: ......

I've always suspected he was totally oblivious, and now I have proof!

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm almost done with thread flake #12 ... not as much time as I'd have liked this week to make them but I'm very happy with having this many done.

Which book is the top left flake from?

Top left is from 101 Snowflakes (http://www.maggiescrochet.com/pages/Leaflets/ASN_Annies/ASN_1217_101_snowflakes_main.htm) - it's #23, bottom right on the front cover of the book. :)

Take care all,

Holiday

Ah- The one I'm working on is from Craftster, in the knitting forum, under finished projects, then topic-surprise-Snowflake Illusion Scarf. I'm using KnitPicks Wool of the Andes in blue bonnet (a bright, almost royal blue) and cream. It has a good contrast, but I dunno- I think somehow my knitting is too spread out. So I'm re working the chart myself. I was two motifs in, but decided I couldn't see a darn thing, so I ripped it out. I'm about to start the second motif of the second try :) I'm not going to rip, I'm just going to try my version of the chart-one motif that doesn't "pop" isn't going to ruin the whole effect if it DOES work. I'm looking forward to seeing your design!

I like yours more than the book's picture! I'm going to be home alone tomorrow, so plenty of ME TIME. Hopefully I can get at least one more flake done before the week is over. I feel kind of bummed that I had to rip my scarf so often, and that I only got one flake done.

I was rather traumatized by that one flake though. My cat saw the lurex swaying in the AC, and took a jump- ran off when I tried to shoo her, with the lurex strand in her mouth! Both my boyfriend and I were petrified that she had eaten some, but she's been fine. But I'll tell you, I actually crocheted the rest of that flake (after re-attaching the lurex, grrrr) standing UP. And I'm not kidding.

Sweetie the Snowflake (http://www.crochetsal.com/snowflake.html) :manyheart

To make a scarf, you could make another Sweetie so you have one for each end. Then, join in one of the top three loops (end), ch 1, sc in same lp, ch 2, sc in next lp, ch 2, sc in next lp. Turn. Use your favorite stitch combination to make half your scarf. Finish off.

Repeat for the other end, but don't finish off. Hold Right Sides together and slip stitch across the center seam of the scarf. Finish off.

For a lacy edging, join in any loop on Sweetie, ch 1, sc in same loop. *(Ch 3, sc in next loop) around Sweetie and evenly around the long edge of your scarf* until you get to the next Sweetie. Then repeat from * to * once. Ch 3, join in first sc. Finish off. :hook

I like the 101 book, and then I have 99 Snowflakes (http://www.leisurearts.com/christmas/item_detail.asp?from=&rec_num=6#) too which is pretty good. Most of the snowflakes I've done seem to be from those two books. I have Lacy Snowflakes and White Christmas; it took a while for me to be patient enough to do the ones in White Christmas, I'm not sure why. Lacy Snowflakes was the first book I bought. The other snowflakes I have made (and I finished 3 others yesterday, still need to block them) for this CAL came from Crocheted Snowflakes (http://crochet.tangleweeds.com/images/crocheted_snowflakes.jpg) by Mary Thomas. I think it's out of print, but I got my copy on eBay. Umm... bottom right the picture came from 101 Snowflakes too, but the rest are from Crocheted Snowflakes.

Just my luck! I would pick the pattern book with errors and that even you thread experts don't have the patience to do. Vatonc1, which patterns in White Treasures had mistakes? Maybe that's been my trouble? I had no trouble with any of the small ones, but the bigger ones are more challenging and maybe I can blame it on an error in the pattern and not on my own incompetence?

Got one small one done last night and half of a large one. Hit a snag, though, in the third and final round and decided not to frustrate myself. So I practiced my knitting with a Warm Up America square instead. Don't want to cheat on the CAL! LOL

I wonder what the "deal" is with White Christmas:think. I loved it when I bought it, but after sitting down with it and trying a few patterns...I find myself putting it down (in disgust LOL) and reaching for something else. I don't find the patterns especially difficult, maybe it's how they're written...:( (or it could be the lack of sleep I've had this week :lol)

Oh....I forgot to add..I picked up some Royale at Michaels today, and found some white with a "Pearle" filament wrapped around the thread. It reminds me of the Knit Cro-Sheen that has the metallic thread wrapped around it- but this is more iridescent. So...
I haven't gotten around to using it, but I was wondering about any suggestions for blocking....I usually just use the 'tried and true' starch and water method for just plain thread, but I think the starch will probably limit the "sparkle factor" with this thread. What are you all using when you block with Lurex? :hook

LOL Patty!:) I didn't write down the pattern #'s like I should have:blush...as you probably read in my other post, I have had little to no sleep this week (due to my 2 toddlers that refused to understand Mommy's need for sleep) so I am probably not as "rational" as I should be:lol!!!

I just block it like I would if it wasn't there. I use Stiffy by Plaid to stiffen my flakes (I think it's a glue/water mix), and the Lurex shows through just fine. :D If you're worried, try to stiffen a little swatch to see how it works.

I have to find my camera and finish re-tooling the pattern but if it works out I'd be glad to share it with you if you want. I found the thread on Craftster, thanks for the information on locating it. How is your chart coming? *Smiles,* even if one doesn't pop the difference will be like true snowflakes--the way they're all different, you know? Well, here's hoping both of our scarves come out the way we want them!

I'm thrilled that I was able to make eleven snowflakes, for a while there I didn't think I'd make it past four. :hook

For those of you that loved making snowflakes this week, you're more than welcome to grab the Snowflake Mondays button:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v133/yarngirl/blog%20graphics/snomon.gif

The idea of Snowflake Mondays is simple if you aren't familiar with it. The plan is to set aside your regular projects and make snowflakes on Mondays, every single Monday all year long. It isn't a rule or even an official CAL (though I could make it a webring, I'll look into that), you just have to promise yourself that more often than not when Monday rolls around you'll be making snowflakes.
If and when I make it a webring there will be additional details. :D I love surfing blogs and seeing snowflakes being made, so please join us!

Brie, yours are beautiful! Believe me, I make plenty of mistakes. I constantly hear in my head "snowflakes in nature aren't perfect" and "that probably won't show up on a tree from a distance". :wink Oh, and my personal favorite, "blocking will probably fix that". I used a different hook for the red ones (Susan Bates) and found that I really like it and it worked up much quicker for me than the Boye hook I was using! The red ones has a strand of red lurex running through it! No fear, your computer color is not going wacky - the third one was one in peach!

Brie, Kimberly, Julie--awesome flakes! They are gorgeous! Sorry, no photo to post of my own. I bought some starch yesterday but forgot that my pins were in my office at work, so I couldn't block them. But I realized that I have a lot of flakes to make if I plan on decorating. So I'm going to participate in Snowflake Monday for the rest of the year. Unless the class I'm scheduled to teach has enough students--since it's Monday nights, 6-8:30, and involves an hour and a half commute each way, I won't be getting any done on Mondays. Maybe Snowflake Tuesdays for me. :P

I think I completed 8 or 9, one still half done. What fun! Thanks Julie, for a great idea! Patty

Anyways, I managed to make 14 snowflakes last week. They haven't been blocked yet, but I will do that ASAP, and post pictures here this week. :)

I haven't seen everybody's snowflakes yet so I'm off to do it now. :D

Thanks everyone! I realize that I'm probably just being overly critical of my own work, but I can't help it. I've always been like that!

Julie - all of the patterns I used were free online patterns, and I found most of them at CPC.

I finally broke down and bought a snowflake book, though. I managed to find Crocheted Snowflakes by Mary Thomas on ebay, so I went ahead and got it. I'm planning on joining in on Snowflake Mondays, too.

Kimberly - I :manyheart those red flakes! I never would've thought to use colored thread!

I love everyone's snowflakes! :yay

I should have a photo of the rest of my snowflakes tomorrow. I picked a hectic time to join a week-long CAL ;) what with the 12 hour shifts during the week and then this weekend DH and I were helping move my stepdaughter into her new apartment.

But I did get 3 (or is it 4?) more snowflakes done. I would have finished more, but it seemed like about half the patterns I printed out were ones that I just didn't get--I'd be about halfway through it and just hit a wall and not be able to figure out what I was doing wrong. I got to the point where I needed to make something that wasn't a snowflake just to prove that I hadn't lost the ability to crochet :lol but what I ended up doing was the coaster version of Denise Augostine's Dreaming doily -- it looks very snowflake-y so I figured I could count it as a snowflake.

:hook

That sounds like exactly the thread I've been using... I blocked it with a mixture of elmer's glue and water, about half and half but maybe a little more water than glue. It came out fine; since the glue dries clear it didn't hide the sparkle at all :)

I think I'll be joining in on the snowflake mondays thing. I definitely like making snowflakes (when the pattern isn't going horribly wrong, that is! :haha ) Maybe next time I get a 40% off Joann's coupon I'll see if they have any of those snowflake books...

I managed to finish 15 (well, 14 and a snowflake bookmark) which makes me very, very happy considering what a wreck last week turned out to be. The last few are blocked and drying now and I'll have pictures of all up tomorrow. I definitely will be trying to do at LEAST one snowflake each Monday from here on out, I really enjoyed this CAL ... thanks so much for starting it up!

I LOVE seeing all the beautiful snowflakes! :clap
It's surprising that there are so many variations of snowflake patterns.:eek

I said yesterday I was going to block my snowflakes, and I did too. They are dry and still pinned now.... but to me, they are not solid enough. :(
All of my snowflakes are pretty lacy, and I wanted them to be really hard, but they aren't.
After I washed and dried my snowflakes , I soaked them into undiluted liquid starch, squeeze-dried them, pat-dried with a towel, pinned, and let dry. I am going to use acrylic spray later, but I don't know how much it helps. :think

Any suggestions pleeez. :)

Finally done with blocking the flakes I did during this CAL; I look forward to making more, but not to blocking them! I thought doing it all at once would be a better idea. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Next time I'll block them as I get them done, or a couple at a time. I do think I am getting better as I go, and I'll be doing Snowflake Mondays for sure

I have been a silent participant to this CAL as life got in the way. But I have been crocheting some snowflakes but not as many as I hoped for.

I have enjoyed looking at all the wonderful snowflakes you all have made :clap

I am going to crochet a lot more of them before Christmas and I enjoy it a lot :)

Wow, Lani, gorgeous! I saved my 11 snowflakes (forgot to bring the camera to work to upload the images, again!) to block together, and now I'm wondering if that was a mistake. :eek I've never blocked and your post has me worried. Oh well. We'll try this weekend. Patty

*sniff* I'm so honored!

Julie made me an 'honorary' member of this CAL by gifting me with not just one but THREE of her amazingly beautiful snowflakes!!! :hug My whole family is so in love with them, my husband looked at the card and said "Small token? you're kidding! Look at the work that went into those!" I think it's really true that nobody appreciates the work that goes into crochet projects like other crocheters...and I am so amazed and thrilled with this beautiful gift.

Thank you Julie, I appreciate it so much! You really made my week.:manyheart

I finally have pictures of some of the snowflakes I made last week:) I actually have some more to block, hopefully I will get around to it in the next day or so. Anyway, here is the first batch:D

I noticed while I was uploading the pic that some of these are a bit "off" so they will probably get "re-blocked" when I work on the next batch:lol

Here's the link to my first snowflakes from last week. Reminder, these aren't blocked yet, so they're curling and not flat at all. One is quite lumpy and doesn't seem right, but maybe the blocking will minimize that. Anyway, far inferior to the gorgeous examples posted here, but my first snowflakes so I'm pleased. :) Patty

Big thank you's to everyone who participated in this CAL. I absolutely LOVED seeing everyone having fun talking about snowflakes which most of you know is my absolute favorite thing to make. I am totally amazed and honored; you guys, you all are thanking me for the CAL! :faint :manyheart :ghug

I'm so glad everyone had fun with it, and I hope you all keep up with the flake production throughout the year. The pictures so far are amazing, beautiful flakes everyone, really and truly! :clap :cheer :clap

We'll definitely do a Snowflakes in July CAL again next year, this was too much fun not to do again.

Can I just tell you all that I am totally OBSESSED with Christmas now! Between Christmas in July and the Snowflakes CAL - I can't seem to get back into the 'groove' with my other projects. I did break it up a bit and make a thread angel,;) but now I'm hunting through other Christmas related patterns! You've created a monster!:hook

Julie, we should all be thanking you for doing this for us! If you hadn't started this CAL, I would NEVER have gotten 15 flakes done already. Never. Heck, I wouldn't have gotten 15 flakes done by Christmas, good intentions or no. And yeah, I'm also obsessed with Christmas now *hehe* I've found all sorts of nifty things to make for myself and my daughter and my mom and and and ... it's great :)

Julie, we should all be thanking you for doing this for us!
Yes, exactly! I've been admiring your snowflakes for ages without ever getting off my butt and actually making one, and now I've finally gotten started :yay

I still need to block my last 3 snowflakes. Life keeps getting in the way of my crochet habit :P My 12-hour shifts this week were yesterday and today (I'm 11 and a half hours into today's--is there a falling over with a thud smiley? :lol ), so I'm thinking tomorrow I'll manage to get them blocked...

I have 3 others waiting to be blocked 1 of which I need to figure out it should be 3-D if done correctly. Will get a picture of them posted ASAP.:blush

I love your idea. I have never made a snowflake before. How do you make them. What kind of yarn or thread are you using?

August 9, 2005, 12:49 PM
Well, since yesterday was Monday and I can still make snowflakes on Monday (class starts in 2 weeks), I finished off one of the placemats for my Mom for Christmas. It's the pattern you can link to via CPC, minus the green ribbons. I used cotton ease for the placemat itself (thanks to whoever posted two weeks ago about the cotton ease at Tuesday Morning; that's where I got three skeins for $6). I used On line Paloma for the snowflakes, and I'm not happy with them. It was very slippery to use, and then when I weaved them into the placemat itself, they look kind of, well, bad. I may try using thread snowflakes on the next one. Or maybe just no snowflakes. Mom has a red kitchen, so she could use them year round if I took the snowflakes off. It's hard to tell that they look stupid in the photo, but trust me, they do.

Thank you, Chie! I just checked yours out and they are gorgeous! :yay

D'oh! I'm always hitting the submit button before I'm finished typing LOL

Patty, in the photo the snowflakes look adorable. :manyheart I wonder, though--if you'd rather make a red set without the snowflakes that she can use year-round, but you want to add some snowflakes to it, maybe some matching napkin rings with the snowflakes would be pretty, and probably pretty quick to make...
