Okay I am hoping that you all will be able to help me out here. I had a young lady at church this morning ask me if I could make her a skirt for an upcoming conference that we are having in March. I asked her if she had a pattern and she didn't. I asked her so you want me to make something up then huh? She said what I am looking for is something that she could wear over a straight skirt. The only other description that she could give me that she wanted was something funky. I am asking :think that you all will let your imagines go and maybe you can come up with something to help me out. She is a larger sized person so it can't be anything for someone that is slim. Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give me.

You could get a pattern from say Butterick or Simplicity or any other. You use the pieces that are meant to cut out of material as your guide for your skirt [or dress or any other thing] Make each piece individually and then sew them together as you would any other crochet piece. HTH

Doris Chan has some great patterns for going over tops of skirts and leggings, I think they are funky.
http://www.interweavecrochet.com/issue/2008/toc-fall-2008.asp its called Lara's Dance Skirt (I am a large size and I would make this for me)
then there is this one http://doriseverydaycrochet.blogspot.com/2008/07/chrysanthemum-tea-skirt.html
but you do need to have access to Amazing Crochet lace as this is and adjustment from the tea shawl
Hope you find something you and your friend like.

What about making a shawl that she can tie at her waist and drape down over the the skirt with the triangle point or a rounded 'point' on one side. There are so many different patterns to choose from.

OnFire4Jesus- I have been thinking of doing the purchase a pattern thing (for myself) just haven't taken the leap yet.
Chanti-I do have the amazing crochet lace book and I will ask this girl if this skirt is funky enough for her. I am just concerned that I don't have enough time to meet her deadline.
Yarnmover-I do have a couple of books that I can have her look at.
These are all great ideas thank you.

The very first one that Chanti posted "Laura's Dance Skirt" was EXACTLY what I seen in my head when I read your OP! I think that is stylish yet a little funky.
