Okay here is the deal, hubby gets upset with my SQUARES all around my chair and enviroment..:lol...so I WANT to make SEVERAL drawstring bags to keep things in, like red squares, blue squares, yarn IN use, yarn NOT in use this second....sooooooo I thought if I make 6 drawstring bags, of different sizes of course, this would "clean up my space" and he has me cramped with all HIS stuff in the Living room...:lol.....so pooh on him this is really for me...so I ask
Is there a GENERAL pattern that you can use to adjust the size, diameter and height of the bag, and if so, HOW? I don't even know how to make a drawstring bag..lol..maybe I shoud find a pattern and try one first????? Any help, turns in the right direction GREATLY appreciated :hug

In general, I would just make it like a hat. Keep making an increasing circle until you get it to the 'width' you want the bottom of the bag to be, then just stop increasing and crochet each row until you get to the depth you want. Then do a row where you single crochet 5 or 6 stitches then Chain two (repeating it around) Then the next row, crochet in each stitch and in each chain stitch. Then do another few rows of crocheting in each stitch around and then finish it off.

For your drawstring, crochet a chain and maybe one row on that chain for your draw string and then weave it through the chain two 'holes'. I, myself, would make two drawstrings for each bag, weaving both of them though the same chain two holes. Then to close your bag, you can pull one drawstring to one side of the bag and the other on the other side, tightening the opening of the bag closed.

If you wanted to make only one drawstring, another idea is to put one of those release 'button' things they put on drawstrings on coats -- you push in the button to move it up and down the drawstring to tighten or loosen it.

YOu could also sew a large button under where the drawstring comes out, and wrap the drawn string around the button to secure...i do that with my bottle cozies.

Are you only interested in crocheting your bags? Drawstring bags only take 5 minutes to cut and sew, so if you have a sewing machine, I'd go with that!

Crochet Pattern Central has about 12 patterns for drawstring bags - hope this link helps - you may if it redirects you to "home page" have to input drawstring bags into the search box - good luck!

I made one years ago and used macrame type colored yarn so that at the beach when full of sand I could hold it under a shower or faucet and rinse the sand out quick and have it be water repellent type yarn.
I just started as someone said making a circle larger and larger to the diameter I wanted and then crocheted in the back loop of the stitches to form a "ridge" to work upwards from and delinieate the bottom from the side of the bag which I also worked in the round - In the middle I made a few rows of fancy open stitched type rows and then brought it back to a solid stitch. I lined mine simply and between the lining on the bottom circle and the liner I placed a circle of plastic canvas that I cut to shape (for stability of the bag and so it would stand up straight). I used decorative drapery type rope as the string to close it and and to tighten the string a large wooden bead that I could push down towards the bag.
My dd hijacked this bag for many years and loved it!
