Description: A Tunisian crochet technique using a double-ended hook will be taught in this class. Students will learn up to three Tunisian crochet stitches to make a scarf as long as they like! There are no limits with this special technique! Beginning students will learn the basics of Tunisian crochet and using the double-ended hook. Advanced students will enjoy learning to use a double-ended hook with a solid color project, which isn't normally seen in double-ended hook projects.

Supplies Needed:

Caron Simply Soft yarn recommended or a comparable soft worsted weight, 2 solid-color skeins needed for scarf, 1 in main color and 1 in contrasting color. Please, no variegated yarns. Anyone wanting to try the unique solid color double-ended hook project will need 2 skeins of the same color.
Double-ended Tunisian hook, sizes can range from H through K. H will produce a tighter project while K will have more drape. For reference, a K hook was used for the projects in the photo.
Small yarn needle

Hi, Kim!

I am interested in signing up for this one!

I have been crocheting for a looong time, but this is one technique that I just haven't ever been able to get quite right.
I am a lefty, so any instructions that I have tried to follow haven't really worked out so well.

btw... I really like your designs on your website!

Having taught many lefties, I'm very careful in my instructions to keep things non-exclusive. I'm sure you won't have any problems.

And, thank you! :)

Hi Kim, I am new to crochet and even newer to tunisian crochet, but for some reason I feel really drawn to the design. I am really interested in learning the stitches.
My probably silly question would be, that the double ended hook suppose to have a hook on each end, am I correct? The reason I am asking this because recently I found some long hooks locally, but those had only one hook, while the other end looked like a knitting needle. Thank you,

No, this isn't a silly question at all! The hook you saw was a regular Tunisian hook. A double-ended hook will also be long, some are 10-inch, some are 14-inch. But, there is a hook on each end.

You can see them at Its All Just String (http://itsalljuststring.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=76743913) and Frugal Knitting Haus (http://www.frugalhaus.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=546).

Hi Kim,
I am looking forward to learning this double-ended hook project and can't wait. I took your Tunisian Striped Felted bag and loved. As a matter of fact I'm making a matching scarf in a lighter color with an horizontal stripe of the same color yarn that I used for the bag.
Really looking forward to this new adventure.

I'm thinking of signing up (although why I want to add to my WIPs, I don't know :lol). I love the pattern shown, and I think it would make a lovely present for someone.

I did have one question...I don't own a double-ended hook. I've thought of buying one in the past, but the selection is always limited in stores, I've noticed. Can you recommend a good brand? If I do sign up, I may end up ordering the hook online...

My preference, when it comes to a double-ended hook, is the 10" Susan Bates double-ended hooks. I like them better because they're not as heavy as the typical 14" Boye Cro-hooks.

I've had a lot of success finding the tunisian hooks I need (both single and double-ended) at:

http://www.itsalljuststring.com

I like the Pony brand double-ended hooks, but it doesn't appear that they go up to a size K which is my favorite size.

I try to do everything I need to do to ensure my students have a successful class experience. That may mean photos and illustrations. It could mean short videos. It could also mean trying to explain something in several different ways. Although I may provide these images and illustrations, I don't fully depend on them for teaching.

What length hook do we need, 10" or 14" ?
Or doesn't it matter?

Hey Kim,
I just found this (http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2873&PRODID=prd27714) on joanns website and ordered one just to see how I like it. They are 40 inches long (which is the perfect size for an afghan-I think....maybe) and it looks to me like the hook part is actually longer that regular tunisian-cabled hooks. Hope that wasn't to confusing.

Thanks

crojulee Is is it a double ended hook? How do you pay for classes? Can you use paypal? Or send a check? never did a class before, I would like to pick up some tusanian skills to do an afghan that way, a graph ghan. I have used a double ended hook before but it was a long time ago, it's a p or an n hook. Pretty big. I don't know if I can find one at the stores here. Crochetkim I used your heart square pattern to make a scarf it's a lovely pattern, I like your patterns.

For those who love Tunisian crochet like you and me :manyheart, will love the circular hooks. My favorites are the swivel hooks and, unfortunately, they are no longer available.

But, as with any double-ended hook, you can use it for regular Tunisian crochet or double-ended Tunisian crochet. You can simply put a rubber band on the smaller hooks. Or, in the case of the circular hooks, I usually stuff the unused hook under the thigh or wedge it into the side of my couch cushion.

This particular class teaches a technique so that you can accommodate a really wide afghan using only a 10" hook. I made an afghan vertically, with about 240 loops, using nothing more than a 10" hook.

The scarves to be made in this class were made vertically with a 10" hook. You are certainly welcome to use the circular hook if you find it more comfortable for you.

That is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! I can't wait to find out how it's done. I doubt I'll be making an afghan anytime soon but I'd happy with a scarf though.

Can't wait for the class to start (Your class is gonna be my birthday present to myself-21st b-day-march 1st- YAY!!!).

This particular pattern will work with smaller hooks. It will just be a little tighter and you may want to add extra to the starting chain. For the looser look shown in the photo, you could also use a lighter weight yarn, like a sport weight with the I hook.

Hi Kim,

I have never taken a class before, but I am really interested in this technique. A month or so ago a friend of mine in my knitting group picked up a huge box of knitting needles at a yard sale. Mixed up among them were tunisian (both double ended and regular) crochet hooks. She gave me all the hooks because she does not crochet and I have been looking for a way to use them-- when I saw your class. So although I am a pretty advanced crocheter and a knitter, I have never done tunisian before. So I am excited.

I also came by your 13 tunisian dishcloths booklet, and I have looked through it but I am a bit overwhelmed by the instructions. So I am hoping maybe after this class I can tackle some of the dishcloths.

No, I didn't use a full skein of either. But, if there was a likelihood of running out, you can just end it at any time.

I had a bent Boye hook once. I bent it back. I was a little scared at first too. But, it bent right back without issue.

I did in fact try to use it bent. And, it worked. But, it didn't work as smoothly for me. After using it for awhile, I decided to just try to bend it back and it worked.

Now, I also had a MoEZ hook that Christian stepped on. Wooden hooks don't stand up to little boys nearly as well. :rofl

Yes, absolutely! The scarf can certainly be made with a circular hook. The class is separated into 3 sections. One section of the class won't be necessary, though, with the longer, circular hook. You'll just skip that part.

My hooks came today, so I'm all set with that. I bought both a K and a J (Frugal Haus) since I tend to be a pretty loose crocheter and often have to go down a size to make gauge. Not sure if I have the yarn though - most of what I have is Red Heart and that is a different gauge from Caron Simply Soft (which is far more scrumptious).:yes

No, it's not difficult at all. It just means that one section of the class won't be necessary for you if you are using the circular hook. So, in that event, it would actually be easier. :)

Well, now I'm not sure what to do. Went to JoAnnes last night who told me they had my hook. They were suppose to have a circular K hook on hold.
I was relieved because no place else in town had either the double point or circular.
ANYWAY, I go to pick it up from hold only to find out it was a circular KNITTING NEEDLE. ARGGGH!!! I specifically stressed CROCHET to them.
Now I'm going to have to order a needle from somewhere today. I don't care if it is straight or circular.... but now I don't know which to order and it won't be here to start class on time.

Oh, no! Have you already signed up for the class? I would hate for you to have signed up and not be able to start in time. I mean, if you were to get the hook on Monday, you could still participate. And, I always keep my classrooms open through the following weekend too.

This website is owned by an individual, so it's possible she could get something to you right away:

I believe her cro-hooks go up to size J. And, a J would work just fine. I've always had excellent service with that website.

Hi Kim, I have a question concerning the Bobble stitch. I am making your pattern called Guatemalan Surprise and the directions for the bobble stitch appeared to be different then for this class. Is that correct? In the scarf pattern I go into the same stitch three times and in the afghan pattern I go down and skip a row and go in only twice in the same stitch. If that is correct then I am doing both kinds of bobble stitch correctly. Thanks bunches,
Sharon

I'm not sure why my reply didn't go through the first time. But, if you see it twice, it's unintentional.

Sharon, I'll be answering your question in the classroom and I have sent you a private message with the direct link to the class. :)

For those who love Tunisian crochet like you and me :manyheart, will love the circular hooks. My favorites are the swivel hooks and, unfortunately, they are no longer available.

Thanks for the information! I love Lacis. :) I just wish they would make some with that swivel. It really takes strain off the wrist. And, I'm kinda limited with sizes.
