View Full Version : How will you sort New Posts?

Donna

We're curious! Now that we have a drop-down menu that allows you to sort New Posts by time (the old way) or by forum (a new option), which will you use? If you're not completely sure how you'll sort, just give the best answer for how you're currently sorting or how you think you will sort now that you have two options. Over time, you may change how you sort, but we'd like to know how you feel right now. Please vote in the poll above. Thank you! :hug

If you haven't heard about the change in sorting options for the New Posts link, you can read the announcement here: http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=95461

Edited to add:
If you will use only one sort choice (only by time or only by forum), you can, if you like, change this setting in your User CP to display only that type of search. You will then see only a New Posts link, not a drop down menu. See this FAQ: How to Customize the New Posts Link (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=95530).

So the drop down menu is new. I've only been a resident of C'ville since the first part of December and figured I just had not spotted that option yet. So I didn't have a "Dhuh" moment. I enjoy the new feature especially for the first time I sign on in the morning. Its a quick way to see if anything new has been posted in a forum I'm interested in. So far I have not sorted by time; but suspect as I check back into C'ville throughout the day I will be using that feature also. Thanks Amy & Donna:hug :hug :clap :clap

I will mostly search by forum. It's nice to have the posts all sorted by kinds that way. Easier to focus my attention this way! :cheer

Viewing the poll results, I see that, so far, I'm the only one to vote forum only. Oh, how I hope these results don't encourage you to drop this wonderful new development.

No worries, we will not be dropping this new feature! We are simply curious what people's preferences are for sorting. Also, if we were polling to decide whether to add or not add a feature we would poll in advance; we would not add the feature and then take it away based on a poll.

Additionally, (according to the results so far) although very few responders (okay, so far just one) will sort by forum only, the majority of responders will use sort by forum at some time.

I'm one of those strange people that don't use the new posts feature at all. :P I visit the sections of C'ville I'm interested in, whenever I have time, to see what's new.

(I can usually tell at a glance what's new and what isn't. My "training" comes from all the bookmarked crochet and knit sites I look at every week - I take a glance and can tell if a pattern is new or not because I am so familiar with the page/set-up and what was there the last time I visited.)

I use both. Sometimes I just want to se what is new so I use the time option and sometimes I am just looking for whats new in a particular forum so I use that option. Its a fast way to see whats new in the area I am interested in at the time. I think it helps me find the post I am looking for much faster.

I am not sure if everyone understands how the search by forum works so go ahead and give it a try. You just might like it once you try it.

THANKS FOR GIVING US THE OPTION!!!! :hug

I don't use the new posts either. I just go into the forums that I visit most often and catch up that way.

I should probably give it a try - I am sure that I will get to see alot of new and interesting ideas

I will search by time
If I want to go to a forum I have always used the forum jump on the bottom of the page and will continue doing it that way. It's actually faster for me.

I will probably keep using the old way mostly from habit but I think its great that we have an option :hook

Depending on how busy my day/week/month is, depends on how i search. If i'm visiting every day, i'll sort by time. But the past 2 months, i was reading by forum, and User CP, because, between work, call time, b/f's mom receiving hospice and family pitching in 'round the clock, funeral arrangements after that, hours of driving, etc., i just didn't have the time to read everything.

Which is why i'm a huge fan of the 'sort by forum' feature. It saves all that back-and-forth clicking, by going forum-to-forum.

I've been using the original 'new posts' ever since I started here two years ago. Imagine my confusion the other day when I suddenly had to make a choice! I won't be using the sort by forum function, but I can see how some folks may prefer it. I will be gratefully following the instructions for how to set my preferences in the control panel. Thank you for this. I was finding the new feature to be mildly annoying.

If I want to go to a forum I have always used the forum jump on the bottom of the page and will continue doing it that way. It's actually faster for me.

That doesn't work well for me, as there are multiple forums I would like to check - if there are 15-20+ individual forums/sub-forums you want to check for new posts - that would take a long time bouncing around one to another.

I absolutely love the sort-by-forum option, it's saved me a lot of time. I'm not a big chatter, so most of the time, I just want to see any and all new posts that are directly related to crochet, and skip over all the chit-chat/intro/games/off-topic type of posts. Previously, with sort-by-time only, it took much longer to skim over multiple pages of new posts, trying to separate the two types of postings - now I can easily skip the chat/off-topic forums, and easily find ALL the new posts in any of the crochet topics all at once.

Though, actually, maybe it hasn't saved time after all, as now I'm in here three times as often checking for new posts!!! ROFL!!!!! (Seriously, it HAS saved a lot of time w/ my searches - I'm just spending a lot more time here on the site now because of it!!! :) ) But I just wanted to let the great folks running site know that some of us really *really* do appreciate the new sort option.

I don't usually check the new posts, but when I do I've been using sort by time. I guess because that's what I'm used to, but it would be convenient to sort by forum. I'm gonna go check it out now!

I like getting a choice. :cheer How cool! I always use the new posts link as soon as I log on. I missed the announcement but it was neat seeing the drop down.

I will still search by time because it's what I am used to but I've searched by forum too so I chose time first & forum sometimes. I may use forum more as I get used to that option.

Oooh I love the fact you can turn the new feature off! Thanks for that information, I didn't like the two step process where one could be! Thanks for taking care of that side so those who liked the old way don't have to change!

I really like have the choice! In the morning, I don't want to wade through all the forums I don't really read, just to get to the new posts in the forums that interest me. By the same token, I like sorting by time later in the day, when there are fewer posts to sift through.

I love the new feature and voted "I will mainly sort by forum, but sometimes sort by time".

I do use both, but prefer the feature of sorting by forum, especially since there are some forums that I don't have as much interest in as others. Thanks for continuing to make Crochetville so enjoyable and user-friendly! :cheer

Initially I thought that I would use both ways to sort but I will probably be sorting by forum only. Thanks again Donna and Amy for all the work that you two do to keep this site great.

I sort by forum, with the Afghan's category being my favorite. I thought it would be listed at the top, but I guess it goes by the major category groupings first, and then alphabetical from there?

None-the-less, I appreciate the new feature and it makes my time on C'ville more focused and targeted.

That said, I go to my subscribed threads via the "User CP" link first before looking at anything else.

I sort by forum, with the Afghan's category being my favorite. I thought it would be listed at the top, but I guess it goes by the major category groupings first, and then alphabetical from there? Unfortunately, the forums are sorted by their forum ID number, which is the order in which each forum was created here at Crochetville. I have been trying to find a solution to sort them either alphabetically or in the order in which they appear on the home page, but it seems a better sort order may not be possible at this time.

That said, I go to my subscribed threads via the "User CP" link first before looking at anything else. Me, too!

Honestly I don't pay too much attention to the forum breakdown. What catches my eye is the subject line and whether it's a fairly new thread. If there's more than, say, 30 messages, chances are I've already perused the thread.

I will sort by time because sometimes posters will also put their message(s) in the "wrong" place.

I really like the sort by forum feature. There are some sections I hardly ever read, so this way I can skip over them and go to new posts in the sections I do want to see. I appreciate the new feature!

I don't use the New Posts feature. I go directly to each section I'm interested in and then I browse other sections to see what else is going on or try to learn something new.

Both. First time on in the day, I'll sort by forum...if Iwant to refresh my options, or am on again later, I'll probably sort by time, so the most recent end up in front. :)

Being as I've already voted (that I don't use the New Posts link) I'm unable to vote again.

If I could, I would modify my vote to say that I am using this feature, mostly "by time".

I decided to give it a go instead of just sticking to what I knew best (so tempting!) and lo and behold it's really good fun and I'm reading threads I wouldn't even have glanced at previously.

Thank you for this new/updated feature :manyheart

I really love sorting by forum! It makes it easier to know what the post is about since all of the posts for a forum are grouped together. In the past I would open posts I was not interested in that I mistook for another that had a similar title. My time on the computer is limited. Now I get to all of the posts that I want to and don't feel stressed about the time it takes. :hook

Too Bad once you have voted you can't change it. I am finding I like using the forum method a lot better...
I can do all my HI's to the newbies and then move on to the posts in other forums that I like.

I voted that I would mainly use sort by forum only. When sorting by time, I find that the forums that are of little interest to me are always listed first and I spend a lot to time looking for the ones that are of interest to me. When sorting by forum, I quickly find the ones that are of interest to me and I can spend more time here as I have not wasted time hunting for the ones I really want to see.

I agree with you. I have a feeling if there was a re-count, the results would be different than the first poll.

I am now mostly sorting by forum, it's so helfpul to have all the threads grouped together. I can focus on the ones of interest to me and skip the rest without wasting time :clap

I really enjoy this feature, thanks again to the Mods. Almost every day I come across a thread I would've missed if I was just browsing haphazardly. :cheer
