Check this out at Mary Maxim - called Heart of My Heart Throw -- it is a baby blanket but from the looks of it, you could continue on with the pattern and enlarge it, if you need it larger.

Don't think I'm daft-I'm going to refer you to a small doily pattern (free).
I made it (as a doily) increased the size 50% by following the concept of the pattern. It's a simple stitch pattern similar to granny square 'shells'. It starts from the bottom tip and grows by adding a shell on each side for a few rows, then is worked a few rows straight, and then worked half way across, then turned and decreased to make the top lobes. It could be easily expanded in yarn, with more rows, to blanket size.
Link to the pattern and my version in this post http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=1105941&postcount=109

Hey Granny, that doily is beautiful! And the idea of increasing into an afghan sounds like it would work. I copied the pattern and may try it later when I have more time. Thanks for letting us know about it.

I made the Mary Maxim one as an engagement gift for my niece. It was actually large enough to be used as a "throw" or lapghan and is used on her couch. The yarn with the kit was Bernat Satin, the worsted weight, not the sport weight. I was so pleased with how it came out that now that I have the pattern, I might actually try it again.
The only problem I had with the kit was that the ribbon they supplied, which is threaded around the blanket, just inside the ruffled border, was too wide to lay flat. I am a "loose" crocheter so I couldn't understand this. So I went to a craft shop and bought narrower ribbon. I left the blanket with my sister to finish threading it through, as my vacation there was over. As a result, I never got a picture of my final product. My sister took one, I just never got a copy of it.

I actually bought the Grandma's Heart kit and made it, and I had the same problem with the ribbon. It was too wide, so I bought a narrower one also. This one is the same one as somebody posted. They call it something else, but it's the same.
Here's a pic of mine:
