Some of our members are talking about Amazon's Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00154JDAI?tag=crochetville-20) in this thread (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=95826). I have also wanted one for a long time, and I'm even more excited about the new Kindle 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00154JDAI?tag=crochetville-20), their latest version of this wireless reading device.

Why Do I (and maybe you) Want a Kindle?

Well, I'm not sure why YOU might want one, but here are my reasons for wanting one of these lovely devices.

I could easily store a number of pdf patterns for quick and easy access.
The screen is much larger than the PDA I use now for transportable pattern storage.
If I visit a craft store or LYS and see a yarn I must buy, I could easily look through my patterns on the Kindle to find a suitable project.
I could free up lots of space in my bookshelves by not buying paperbacks in all the various series I love to read.
I could download crochet/knitting/craft books and have them ALL with me on vacation instead of having to pick just a few to bring with me.
The Kindle is very light-weight, and nowhere near as heavy as a bunch of books, even paperbacks!
I could save lots of paper and printer ink by storing patterns on the Kindle and not printing them out.
I could even make notes on my pdf patterns and in books I'm reading.
The display looks like real paper, with no glare like with my PDA screen.
Internet access and basic web browser that will let me read simple text-centric sites like Google and Wikipedia. I hope it might work to read Crochetville. (Note: There may be additional online access fees when browsing certain sites.)
I could access books, magazines, newspapers, and blogs on the Kindle.
I could even use it as an MP3 player and listen to podcasts.

How I wish the Kindle was available in Canada. I would be first in line. So far, there seems to be no plans for it to become available here. I could buy one in the U.S., but I wouldn't be able to download any books from here.

I have been wanting one of these for a while! I love to read and always have a book with me. The Kindle would definately make it easier to carry around my books and I would have infinate choices in what I can read next.
But right now buying a Kindle is alittle outa my price range.....but I can wish.

My son in law got a Kindle from my dd for Christmas this year and he absolutely loves it. It goes with him everywhere he goes. I wish I could justify buying one for myself. It seems like a very nifty item.

Great, add crochet to this thing and it's almost impossible to resist.:yes
I read you can add note to the pages, so I bet you could do that with the patterns, such as yarn substition or hook changes (I almost always change hood sizes to get a good gauge).
I think I need to get my taxes done.:lol

Yeah, sort of like adding little yellow sticky notes, I think! My PDA has this feature, and it's great.

I have the original Kindle, and will keep it for a while, rather than upgrade to Kindle 2. I know that Kindle 2 will hold more books, but for now this will suit me just fine. I am so excited! I just uploaded an original pattern from my computer to my Kindle! I am looking forward to uploading more patterns to the Kindle to keep me busy for many many hours. Kindle - it's not just for reading anymore!

As far as travel goes, the new Kindle can read books out loud to you. That would be great if you were going on a long solo driving trip.

If it can "read" to you too?! Wow!

I have a Sony Digital Reader, if you can find it in an ebook or in pdf, you should be able to use it on the Kindle. Only major difference I found between the Kindle and Sony Digital Reader is that the reader has to be plugged into your computer to download, where as the Kindle you can download directly from the Kindle. My reader I only put books on it, but it can have music and pictures! I have not been able to actually find magazines. With technology, it won't be long though!!

I love the idea of the kindle, but it doesn't seem practical to me. For just a little more money you could get a netbook laptop and download a free ebook reader program and have a fully functional laptop. I think the kindle might be slightly more portable but the functionality is pretty limited for the price. The bigger screen might be nice but I can get most of the same functionality out of my iphone.

Debbi-a1

The kindle can do pdf's so if the magazine is a pdf, like Crochet-world, then it probably can do the magazine. If you go to amazon kindle and scroll down they show some magazines.

I just saw a TV ad for an iPhone with an ap for "books" on it. That made it more appealing to me. But it's not much less then the kindle or more then the ereader. And then I'm not sure if the ap costs... but it looked intesting. Have you tried this ap? What did you think of it? Easy to read on the iPhone screen?

Amy, they should give you a commission - I just kind of blew this off since I do audiobooks on my Ipod and MP3 players; then I read about the crochet patterns and that it can read books to me - it will be on my wish list now - perhaps my son would like to get one for his mother for mother's day LOL or at least contribute to my purchase!!

Amy, they should give you a commission -

Actually, they do give us a commission! We have an Amazon Affiliate account. Whenever anybody purchases a Kindle through the link I gave in the first post in this thread, Crochetville gets a 10% rebate as they term it (basically a commission).

So if somebody was going to order a Kindle anyway, if they order through our link, they get to send $35 to Crochetville without spending any extra money. :) Sort of like making a donation that doesn't cost you anything.

Assuming you were going to buy the Kindle anyway. Because buying a Kindle just to give us a donation would be a pretty expensive way to make a donation! :lol

Someday I'm going to have one myself. Right now, my PDA will let me do anything I would want to do on the Kindle. I'd just enjoy the larger screen on the Kindle so much more. Plus my PDA is already 4-5 years old. It's not going to last indefinitely, and they don't manufacture this model anymore. Used ones on ebay are even going for the price I paid for it when it was brand-new!

I do have a bunch of pdf patterns stored on a Memory Stick that I can access with either my computer or PDA. On the PDA, I do get the advantage of seeing them in color, even though the screen is so much smaller. So I'll content myself with that thought for now. :hook

hey yall, for those of you with ipods that hold pictures or contacts, I believe that you could upload patterns onto that. I don't think you could modify patterns at all. But I think you could definityl upload text and such on there... I've been meaning to try it and just haven't gotten to it...

my ipod (classic, 160gb) will only do very small text files, 4kb. Although it can do jpgs, they're so small I wouldn't want to try and see details!

I'm also eagerly looking for answers to 'how do you like it?'. My pda is 5 years old, and the manufacturer is basically out of the pda business in favor of 'smart phones', that I have no interest in.

That's the position I'm in. I love my PDA---a Sony Clie. I'm going to go into withdrawal when it finally stops working one day. I also don't want a smart phone. I just want a basic cell phone.

I can store and view pdf files on my PDA, but even though the screen is large for a PDA, it's just so small compared to that of the Kindle. One day, I'm going to be able to afford one. (If anybody wants to send me a belated birthday present, the Kindle would be an excellent idea! Just kidding!!!)

I think amazon maintains a library for you on their servers, so you can redownload anything you've purchased at any time. I also think you can hook your kindle up to your laptop and create another backup there.

I've had my kindle now for a few weeks and so far I love it.

With the person who asked what happens if it were to 'crash'... I don't see how that could happen, but everything you download is available on your amazon account for backup (like the people who had the kindle 1 then bought the kindle 2 and amazon automatically transferred everything for you).

Also, it's true that some books don't have the read to me function, but I haven't come across one yet. I got the kindle b/c I like to read. It's nice to have that extra 'read to me' feature, but it's a feature I'm sure I won't use that often.

So far, I also transferred a few pdf file patterns to my Kindle and there were no sizing issues (I think some of the Kindle reviews complained that you couldn't adjust the size of pdf files and they were too small to read). They give you your own kindle email address so you just forward the files you want on your kindle to that email address. They do the rest and they end up on your kindle.

Plus, I didn't even realize but you can go online with your Kindle. You can do basic searches but you cannot check email (I tried checking my gmail account and it didn't work). The Kindle has wireless internet to download books right from the Amazon Kindle Store, so I guess it makes sense that you can go online.

So far I really love my Kindle. It'll be nice to use for traveling to not have to pack a pile of books and try to keep all my patterns from getting lost. :clap

we're considering a Kindle. couple questions for those of you who have one...
when you buy a kindle book, do you have proof of purchase? so that you can have a listing for backups? are there any guarantees? what happens 20 years from now? will you have anything to show for all the money you spent? what if the company closes down? Im just trying to think about the what ifs for long term usage. I would hate to invest my money into kindle books, and then have nothing to show for it years later. how long can I keep my kindle books in storage/backed up? Have you found that some books are hard to come by? is there any competition from other companies? are they just as good? did you buy the insurance? what about if it breaks down? how does it get fixed? thanks for you time and help!

I wanted one, but I was talked out of it. I would backup before you have a chance to crash... I have read horror stories about how people did not back up and then all of a sudden their books are no longer available because Amazon does not list that book anymore... Another thing, Newspapers and magazines keep only more recent editions. If you do not back them up you will lose them and Amazon does not refund anything for them.

Please remember this thread is located in the "Support Crochetville" folder, with the purpose of letting people know they can purchase the Kindle through Crochetville's Amazon affiliate link, resulting in a little extra financial support for Crochetville.

Please do not use this thread to discourage people from purchasing the Kindle, okay? :) I've had to remove several posts that are NOT very supportive of this effort for Crochetville.

There are other threads concerning the Kindle in other areas of Crochetville, in which it would be more appropriate to share that type of information.

I'm getting DH a Kindle for Christmas and happy to read your reviews.

Having Amazon store your books is how you store your tunes in your iTunes library. Your library is always there and can be downloaded to a new iPod. In this case your Kindle. Having a Book Library stored at Amazon sounds like it's on the same principle as having an Library on iTunes. No worry about losing what you've downloaded.

Before getting so involved with crochet, I was an avid reader as is my DH. Do ya think he'll will share his Kindle with me? Probably! Maybe he'll let me take it with me to next summer's Chain Link. It'll be great to use on the flights and during layovers.

Hope you get to read or crochet today. :yes
