I like to make baby blankets using a nice textured stitch. For example the stitch used in this afghan:

The happy yellow house site also has some really nice baby afghans.

I also like the look of sc and dc alternating. Its textured and solid without being stiff.

Congratulations how about a ripple stitch for a baby blanket but like losingmymind2 said crochet central pattern has alot there,too.
