Just wanted to mention a couple of people have had trouble with this pattern as discussed here http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1383356#poststop
Sorry, I don't mean to be negative, but I thought it might be helpful to know about.
Ooops, just went back and reread your post, Bearlycrocheting, and saw that you are looking for a thread pattern. Hmm, nothing comes to mind in thread.
P.s. Welcome to Crochetville!

I've seen where some crocheters used the Pineapple Chair back Pattern & used it as a Shawl Pattern. It turned out rather nicely. I think(not sure on this) they used a bigger hook, to obtain a shawl size. You might want to try something like that (or half a Pineapple Doily would achieve the same results, I would guess)

Thank you for your suggestions. Using the pineapple chair back pattern for the shawl sounds like the answer. Now, all I have to do is find that pattern.

You could have found the pattern at celt's group for free. You have to join the group but there is no charge.

Not sure how this would work. She says you can make as many pineapples across as you want. But I'm not sure. You make one side fo the doily then the other, for the shawl you can just make one side.

How about this one? There's only a drawing, but it looks like a trainagle, it's called a Chair Back.
