Have you taught someone to crochet? Have you created a crochet display in your local libary?

Have you participated in a community event related to crochet?

Have you written a book, yarn, or gadget review?

Have you done anything else to promote crochet?

Tell us all about it here!

This is how I promote the craft and art of crochet. I work part time at a huge new JoAnn's. In the summer I teach kids crochet, but normally I just work at the fabric cutting counter. Whenever I see a guest with yarn in their basket I ask them if they crochet. If they do, they tell me their project and I share with them some knowledge that I have, or new yarns that I know about in our store. The other employees know that if a customer needs help with yarn, they can call me to help! And I do!! I love crochet, and I try to promote it where ever I am! I crochet at the doctor's office, and all over town!!! :manyheart

A few weeks ago I gave someone a crochet hook, small ball of yarn & an easy beginner scarf pattern from the LB site. I put everything in a small gift bag and during my GranPunkin's gymnastics class I taught this lady how to make a chain and do the double crochet stitch that the pattern called for. She had expressed an interest in learning and even her husband said she's wanted to learn for a long time.

The hook was one of the many multiples (an extra "G" I think), the yarn was probably about 1/2 skein variegated pastel baby yarn, the pattern was free and I made a new friend.

They didn't sign the GranPunkin up for this session of gymnastics so I'm not sure how the "rookie-hooker" is doing. :hook

My DD is just finishing up her very first scarf, for those who wonder if they can teach someone to crochet, please know that you water the seed when you do your craft in front of your family :hook

When I was having new tires put on my car a few weeks ago I was crocheting in the waiting room. It started up a huge conversation with everyone in the room, even the men and one of the workers. They talked about how they had items that their mothers/grandmothers made when they were children and how much they still treasure them.

I'm a volunteer crochet instructor at our local drug and alcohol rehab. I have students all month! (mind you, I do this regularly)

I also crochet at whatever appointment I'm at. It starts some great conversations. I even have bus drivers (males!) who discuss crochet with me. :lol

I have been teaching my 6-year-old son to crochet! He takes an interest in all of the crafty things I do and wants so much to make things himself. His younger brothers (one step-brother also 6 and his full brother is 4) aren't quite as thrilled with the idea of doing anything except video games, but I love that he truly wants to learn and create himself. It was a bit rough to start, but he can now chain and sc with very little help from me! I think very soon we'll be making a trip to the store to buy him a set of plastic hooks & his own skeins of yarn. I can't wait to see what he can do! It helps to have his step-dad (to be) interested in crafts as well, so he doesn't feel that it is purely a 'female' art. I'm lucky to have such creative minds under the same roof!

My boyfriend's sister knits and wanted to learn how to crochet. I showed her how I learned and taught her a couple things, and now she's working on a rug to use up her scraps and the rougher yarns she didn't like to knit things with (Doing really well too!). It felt good to be helpful :D

Well, a few days ago I taught my grandma how to crochet (single and half double).
Everytime I'm over there she always talks about how great it is someone inheireted her mom's craftiness and that she'd never be able to do it. After some thinking, I suggested she try the Knifty Knitter because it works up pretty fast and it's pretty easy. She tried it and loved it and wanted to make placemats for my aunt's birthday the end of this month. She made one, and it shrunk a little smaller than she anticipated, so I suggested she try crocheting because it doesn't stretch as much as the knifty knitter did, and it uses less yarn (in my opinion). She took to the idea and according to my mom she successfully completed her first place mat the other day.

Now my mom wants to learn.

I taught DD13 to crochet, and she loves it too! My son , 11, even wants to learn, but he has a tough time even making a chain.

My 21 year old son watches intently when I do crochet...hasn't picked up a needle yet though. Taught DIL how to do some basic stitches. She's working on a scarf.

I crochet for a prayer shawl ministry and many other charities.
I will talk about crochet with anyone!
I make wood crochet hooks
I gave my nephew a book, hook and yarn to learn to crochet
I have given several women a learning to crochet book.
I LOVE crochet.

It's great to read all about you all are or have taught crochet in the past. I was just invited to teach at our local library. I've never taught anyone or organized a class. Any ideas you care to impart?

I came up with the idea to make my boss an afghan for her 40th birthday. I wanted to make it out of granny squares to spell out 4-0. A couple of women at work wanted to join in, so I taught them to crochet. There were 7 of us that worked on the afghan. It was beige with a black 4-0. She loved it and now I have more friends to talk about crocheting with.:cheer

Once I taught 2 girls to crochet. They saw me crocheting a doily and they wanted to learn. I had extra hooks (small ones) and cotton thread at that time and I showed them how to make the basic stitches. It was difficult for them to see my demo because I was using thin thread, so I took out my 4-ply yarn and big hook so they can see how to do the stitches better :) Within that week they were able to finish a small doily. It was nice seeing their work and I hope the have developed a love for crochet.

I do much more during the summer, as being a teacher I don't have too much time during the school year.

But, before Christmas I taught my SiL to crochet.

I have plans this summer to get a group of ladies together at church (2 others know how to crochet) and we're gonna work on maybe lapghans for nursing homes, simple stuff they can both keep and give away.

I'm also going to petition my principal to start a 'yarn' club for students who can or are interested in knit/crochet or any other yarn related craft. I'm mainly a crocheter, but I know how to knit and am willing to learn anything else to get my middle school students into it.

We used to have a group at my work (I work in a library) but they ended the group before I started crocheting...:( I would love it if it started back up though!

MARIA, maybe you need to take the initiative to start a group yourself, I'm sure if you ask around you will find a few takers

i used to work in a high school and in spare time taught many young ladies (and one young man) to crochet. i always lecture how i was afraid someday that arts such as ours would someday disappear. i am proud to say i no longer feel like this. i love that the yarn arts are making such a comeback (one good side effect of a economic down turn.). i take my crocheting everywhere and it definitely is a conversation starter.

By the way, the young man i taught to crochet made his mom a scarf for Christmas and his mom came in to ask "did he really make this?" i said yes. she laughed and hugged me and exclaimed "its not perfect but just that he made it for me is very special".

I constantly crochet at home, and often while my kids and the neighborhood kids are playing XBox or watching a program in our living room. So far I've taught two of them to chain. I'm thinking that I will give each of them a hook, skein and instruction booklet for their birthdays or Christmas. I might even hold informal hook alongs at some point!

I have kept hooks and yarn available in my classroom all year long, my students are using them now when they finish the state assessment. I've been teaching a few and they've been teaching each other.

I have taught my SIL to crochet. I crochet at work and about everywhere else so people always see me doing it and ask me what I am making or ask if I can teach them.

I am teaching crochet to two friends, one gal from previous carpool and one GUY (21yr) who wants me to teach him how to crochet a sweater by xmas.fof****! I only crochet afghans and dishcloths so far. He is quite determined. I have only taught him the Single Crochet and he is Running with it!!!! He doesn't even want to know anything else until the sweater is done. I gave him a book on sweaters and he is doing it.

When I first started reading this thread I thought I had not done anything to promote crocheting. But as I read more and more of the posts I now realize I have. I take my crochet with me wherever I go. I have also been making caps and scarves for my church's clothes closet. So even though I have never taught anyone to crochet I now realize I have and am promoting crochet. And in my opinion, the best art/craft to exist.

Rockpool Candy, a fiber artist from Ireland; Laurie Wheeler, leader of Ravelry's "Crochet Liberation Front", Diplohookticus Jimbosei, the world's biggest crochet hook; are doing a crochet and spinning event in a Portland Oregon yarn shop, "Twisted Yarns" on Oct 30, 31. Spinners will spin the makings for crochetiers to crochet a huge spider web. Dippy will be there for anyone who'd like to get a little aerobic exercise and maybe make a stitch or two. Hoping to convert some Portland knitters to the joys of crochet. Anyone in the area? Hope you can come and participate!
oh and I'll be there too

I've retaught at least one person to crochet....and also bring my smaller pieces to meetings, etc...only drawback is i have to lean to say NO when asked to make something.
The WIM list I have for things I want to make for ME is long!

i am not that motivated to do crochet but I must admit my mom really teach me to do so and even encourage me to do some simple patterns.
