View Full Version : April 2009 Sock CAL
Crochetville LLC
March 23, 2009, 07:55 PM
Welcome to our very first Sponsored Sock CAL! This CAL is sponsored by Sheri at The Loopy Ewe (http://www.theloopyewe.com/), an online store specializing in sock yarn. Sheri says, "It's our mission to provide you with top quality sock & lace yarns (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/), patterns (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/patterns/), fun accessories (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/fun-accessories/), and encouragement and inspiration for finding more time to do what you love - knitting [or crochet!]."
Sheri has told us that one of her goals for this year is for The Loopy Ewe to promote the store's intention to be very friendly toward crocheters. She has invited all Sponsored Sock CAL participants to email her a picture of your completed socks so she can show them off in a crocheted socks gallery on her store website. You can find her email address on The Loopy Ewe (http://www.theloopyewe.com/) website.
Sheri is offering a very generous 20% discount on your entire purchase (as much as you want of anything you want) with The Loopy Ewe for the first order you place for this CAL. The coupon code will only be valid on one order placed during the valid coupon dates. Keep reading for more details.
The Loopy Ewe also has a Frequent Shopper Benefits program. When a customer's orders accumulate to $250, the Loopy Ewe will give you a $25.00 account credit towards a future purchase. The Loopy Ewe keeps track of customers' totals (less discounts, taxes, and shipping) and sends an email when the $25.00 credit is earned. Your CAL purchase will count towards your total for the Frequent Shopper Benefits program. Isn't that great?
Dates for the CAL:
The CAL will begin on April 1. This thread will stay open until May 31. If you start at the very beginning, you'll have a full two months to complete your socks.
Who Can Participate?
All registered members of Crochetville are eligible to participate in this Sponsored Sock CAL. You need to be registered so you can post in this thread. If you're not a registered member, you can register a free account here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/register.php).
To participate in this Sponsored Sock CAL, you MUST purchase your yarn from The Loopy Ewe using the special discount code (see below for how to get the code).
NOTE: This is a crochet-along (CAL) and not a class on how to crochet socks. All participants should already know how to crochet a basic pair of socks or be very comfortable with their ability to learn the skills needed on their own. We won't be teaching you HOW to make a pair of socks, but we'll try to help you out if you have questions about a particular pattern.
If you don't know how to crochet socks yet and don't feel comfortable learning on your own, please take our online class offered by Karen Whooley. Keep an eye on our class schedule (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=89677) to see when this class will be offered again in 2009. After taking the class, you can sign up for another Sponsored Sock CAL later this year.
How to Order Yarn with the CAL Discount:
Post a message in this thread that you will participate in the Sponsored Sock CAL.
Use the Contact Us (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/sendmessage.php) form to request the special discount code. Be sure to include your Crochetville username, real name, and email address you will use when placing your order.
AmyS or Donna will send you the discount code. You may not share this code with any other person. (Members who share the code with others will be ineligible to participate in any other Sponsored CALs.)
Go to the Loopy Ewe website (http://www.theloopyewe.com/) and place your order. Be sure to enter your discount code before you submit your order.
Discount Code Terms and Conditions:
Code is good for a 20% discount on your entire order (before shipping and any applicable sales tax). Be sure to enter the code before submitting your order. Discount cannot be applied retroactively to any order submitted without the code.
Code is valid for one order only.
Code is valid from Monday, March 23, 2009 to Friday, May 1, 2009. Discount cannot be applied to any orders placed before or after the coupon dates.
Code may only be used by members participating in the Sponsored Sock CAL.
You may not share the code with anyone else.
If you have any trouble using the code, please contact Sheri. She will be happy to help you with any ordering problems you may have.

Discussion Thread:
This thread will be used for all general discussion related to the CAL. Let us know which yarns and gorgeous colors you're considering for your socks! Tell us about your final selection. Tell us which pattern you decided to make. Share your progress as you make your socks. Have a question about the pattern? Let us know what's causing you problems.
Photo Showcase Thread:
The April 2009 Sock CAL Showcase thread (coming soon!) will be used as a gallery to show off all the completed socks made by Sock CAL participants. If you are able, please post a photo of your finished socks in the showcase thread. Be sure to let us know which yarn/color and pattern you used for your socks! It's okay to post a photo of your finished socks in both the discussion and the photo showcase thread. Don't forget to email Sheri a photo of your finished socks so she can include them in the crocheted sock gallery on her website!

I want to participate SO much, but I'm going to have to sit this out anyway, since I leave for the US on April 20th, and can't justify having yarn shipped to me here before I go. I probably don't have time to crochet the socks during April, anyway. But I waaaannnnt to. :(
Hope this planned event comes around again....
P.S. I did go browsing at the yarn on the site...marvelous! Maybe I'll take advantage of the free shipping deal while I'm in the US so I can play with the yarn when I come back...

You mean I have to choose just one? I am addicted to sock yarn at the moment... all colors all types...
I am thinking something yummy maybe with silk in it... Like The Alpaca with a Twist Fino...
I have been looking at the site since I posted.. too many yarns! ;)

Karen, if you've been crocheting a long time and are comfortable working with patterns, then you shouldn't have any problems at all making a pair of socks!

I'm joining, made socks before but never got completely past the 'one sock syndrome'.
I'm hoping this CAL will help me with getting past that, since everyone will be submitting pics. Also only used worsted, which always felt more like slippers than sox. So now I will use thin yarn too. Browsed the web site and picked a few choices for yarn, my problem is deciding on a pattern. Don't want to purchase it until I decide on the final pattern (to see what and how much yarn I need). There were 5 I liked from the ones you posted, but I have to dig out my sock patterns and check them too.
One question about the yarn without labels, how much do you need of them to make a pair of socks?

I'm still peeking in here, wishing I could play. I thought this was for April? Is it for two months? Hmm. I'm pretty sure I'll have plenty of crochet time while I'm in the US...
Maybe, maybe, maybe. I'd have time to make socks, but I'm not sure how often I'll be online. Do you think it would be okay to participate if I only check in sporadically? :rolleyes
If this runs through May, I could just have the yarn sent to me in the US and start crocheting when I get there...
Isn't it pathetic? :ohdear But I do love to crochet socks and gorgeous sock yarn is hard to resist.

Karen, yes, the CAL will run for two months so nobody feels super-pressured to complete their socks.
We'll close out the threads for new posts on June 1.
The coupon isn't good that long, though. It will expire on May 1. So just be sure to place the order before then. Then the yarn will be ready and waiting for you when you get here to the States.
Use the Contact Us form, and I'll send you the coupon code.

:) That is one of the ones I decided on!! I bought the Malabrigo yarn for that (with a tiny bit of scrap for a trim). I am not that good at zig zags, so it will give me a chance to practice without making a big mess (like with an afghan).
I also purchased Crystal Palace to make the Origami socks.
With all the problems I have with my feet (heel spurs, one foot wider than the other, high instep, diabetes, etc) I am hoping I can adjust for all this (with the instructions for adjustments) and wind up with a custom made fit. And socks that I can wear with my shoes!!!:D
Can hardly wait to start!!! Going to try the "do both at same time" method so I wind up with a pair and not just 1 orphan sock, :lol .
With 2 months, and only 1 swap and 1 Kal I have plenty of time, I think.

I've added everyone's names to the participant list.
Is anybody else interested in joining us? The CAL will run through May 31, and yarn can be ordered at the special discount through May 1. Sheri ships FAST, so even if you order on the last day of the coupon, you should still have enough time to complete your socks by the end of the CAL.
Come on, everyone! Join us! This is a great way to try some of the super-yummy sock yarn for a great price!
If you're worried about spending that much money on one skein of yarn, here's how I justify it: I calculate my per-hour-of-entertainment-cost.
If I spend $20 on a 2-hour movie and popcorn, that's $10 per hour of entertainment.
Say I pay $20 for the yarn and it takes me 20 hours to make a pair of socks. That's $1 per hour of entertainment.
It's much more cost-effective to spend the money on yarn and check out some movies from my local library for free!

After reading through some instructions for different patterns that are listed the socks that seem easiest for me are Karen's pattern from the Toe Up Socks Class. That is the pattern I will be using.

I'm going to order soon...I'm flying two weeks from today!!!! I'll be choosing some multi-colored yarn and making a very basic pair of socks from my own pattern. I don't want to experiment with expensive yarn and make socks I won't like to wear!
This may be true for knit sock patterns, too (I haven't succeeded in knitting socks yet, although I'd like to), but I think crocheted socks are rather fiddly. They don't stretch the same way knit socks do, and if they are too big--ugh. The good news is, of course, that they are very customizable. I've been tweaking my pattern until I have it just the way I like it...but wouldn't you know the pair that finally incorporated all the little things I wanted, just the way I wanted them...was a pair for my daughter! So now I'm ready to make a pair for me...

Yes, sorry about that. But that's the whole purpose of a yarn-store-sponsored CAL: to have the participants purchase their yarn from the store. Otherwise, there's no incentive for the store to participate.
Maybe you'll be able to join us next time!

I decided on the yarn I am using which is Trekking Hard Art yarn made in Germany. It is gorgeous yarn. Here is the link (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/trekking-xxl/trekking-hand-art-brazil-504/). It's a beautiful green. The price $20 seems like a lot of money for one pair of socks but the yarn is so beautiful and soft it's worth every penny.
As for my pattern I am doing the Toe Up Socks pattern from Karen's sock class. I have already done the toe for both socks. Now onto the foot part for both socks! The part I hate the worst about the pattern is the toe part. The rest of the pattern I love. I hate the toe part because of the counting.
I also purchased a beautiful lavender yarn for $36 I about freaked out when I saw the price but when I looked at the yardage I realized I could do 4 pairs of socks with Karen's sock pattern. Then the price didn't seem so bad. This yarn is very thin. The shade of lavender is lovely. I can't wait to make the socks and then wear them!
Thanks Loopy Ewe for the 20% off coupon. I probably never would have tried your store if not for the discount. I will be back buying more in the future!

"My" sock pattern has a toe that requires minimal counting. This is part of the reason writing the pattern down so someone else could use it has never happened. "Increase by 4 stitches in each round, doing 2 increases on each side of the toe (at random)." That would go over big, huh? I'm going to place my order this weekend. I'll be in PA on the 20th, so even with the holiday, I hope the yarn will arrive within a few days. I didn't want it to get there too early for fear my mom would either 1) lose it or 2) (worse!) use it. She crochets, too.

Okay, I've been browsing and perusing, and I finally click-click-clicked and it's a done deal! I won't pretend I didn't spoil myself. I did. I decided to take advantage of the awesome discount offered with this CAL, plus the free shipping over $75, and I ordered this, (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/hand-maiden/sea-silk/hm-sea-silk-cosmic-dawn/) and this, (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/hand-maiden/casbah-sock/hm-casbah-camouflage/) and this. (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/dream-in-color/smooshy/dc-good-luck-jade/)
At first I was just going to order that last one, but...:blush
Two of the yarns will become socks, but the sea silk is destined to be a gorgeous summer scarf, probably in my favorite (I already have two) Boteh scarf pattern. If not that, then Queen Anne's lace.
I'm packing my favorite hooks to take to the US...they don't take up any space at all!
By the way, I LOVED the fact that I was able to pay directly with paypal, instead of putting in my cc#. Way to go, Loopy Ewe!

I'm not really looking forward to this trip to the US, although there will be good things about it. There is a lot of tedious business to be done, plus I'll be leaving my 18yo son behind for work and college (it will be long time before I have a completely empty nest, but the exodus has begun). Ordering this yarn has given me a real boost and something to look forward to! I hope I'll have enough internet access to make me feel like a real part of the CAL, but at the very least, I'll post pictures of my finished socks!

I just placed my order, after lots and lots and lots of moving things back and forth from my wish list to my shopping cart. I finally decided on:
Sheepaints Silk Bamboo in Chocolate Strawberry (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/sheepaints/silkbamboo/spt-s-chocolate-strawberry/): 60% wool, 20% silk, 20% natural bamboo
Fleece Artist Sea Wool in Rose (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/fleece-artist/sea-wool-bordello-sock/fa-sea-wool-rose/): 70% merino wool, 30% Seacell
The Alpaca Yarn Company Paca Peds in Teal for Two (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/the-alpaca-yarn-co/paca-peds/ay-teal-for-two/): 65% superwash wool, 20% alpaca, 15% nylon
I also got 3 skeins of Noro Kureyon Sock #188 (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/noro/sock/noro-kureyon-s188/) so I can make Margaret Hubert's fabulous jacket that's on the May cover of Crochet! magazine. This freeform jacket won a huge prize at CGOA's first annual design contest at Chain Link last year.

Got to row 9 of the cuff with the Panda Cotton and decided I didn't like how it looked and felt in the first pattern I picked (too bulky), so I switched to the Colorful crochet socks and it is working up fine, nice and soft and thin with plenty of stretchability. I am on row 11 of this cuff now.
Love your choices Amy.

Molly, I had been looking over which pattern to choose and then saw your link for the Intuitive Shell Socks. Pattern found. :cheer
Now I'm on the hunt for yarn. :c9 I love yarn shopping!
I made my first pair of socks in January and used the Intuitive Shell Socks (http://www.geocities.com/mrsd2688/IntuitiveShellSocks.html) and love the pattern.. But this time I am going to try the Basic Crochet Sock (http://solwynsocks.blogspot.com/2009/01/basic-crochet-sock.html) .... I want to join in if it is not too late... Hugs, Molly

Switched patterns again, :lol. Just wasn't enough body in the cuff, found out I needed a pattern that called for a smaller hook and was adjustable enough (simpler stitch pattern) to make all the adjustments needed for these silly feet of mine. So now I have finished toe and started foot of Stepping Stones. Looks like I will be sticking to this one.
(I hope.)
Welcome to the new additions to this Cal. The yarns are lovelier than the pics. Have fun!!!

Up to beginning of short heel now. Had to make many adjustments as the Stepping Stones called for fingering yarn, and I am using Panda Cotton, and have to make alot of inc/dec for my feet, but it is working out wonderfully. Took a short break this am to do some quick shopping for Hubby Swap. But now that I have become addicted to this pattern, and have all my notes on the adjustments needed, I will be making more. The elasticity and light weight of the Panda is just perfect for me.

April 17, 2009, 03:30 PM
I finally placed my order. It was so hard to decide! I splurged big time, but then again, it's been a long, long time since I bought any yarn of any kind.
I'm so glad we're doing this together! I don't think I would have bought really nice sock yarn and crocheted socks on my own.
I've never crocheted socks before (well, I did start a sock once years ago, but barely got past the toes), and I don't know how they'll feel, so I wanted to get really soft yarns. Also, I'm very particular about even my store-bought socks; I like them to have a lot of cotton or at least be absorbent and breathe well (I know, I know, wool breathes, too). But I didn't want plain superwash wool. I wanted a blend with cotton or bamboo or something. Here's what I chose:
:check Fleece Artist: Sea Wool Bordello Sock: Color Angel Fish (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/fleece-artist/sea-wool-bordello-sock/fa-sea-wool-angel-fish/)
70% Merino Wool, 30% Seacell (a link to info about Seacell (http://www.smartfiber.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=84&Itemid=90) fiber)
115 gr, 354 yds (325 m)I ordered 2 skeins of the Fleece Artist Sea wool because even though I haven't crocheted socks before, researching various patterns leads me to believe that I'll need at least 400 yards for a pair of ankle socks.
:check Sugar Bunny Blvd: Emeline: Color Spice (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/sugar-bunny-blvd/emeline/sbb-e-spice/)
55% Bamboo, 24% Cotton, 21% elastic
Approx. 400 yds, 4 oz.
:check All Things Heather: Merino/Tencel: Color Eclectic (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/all-things-heather/merinotencel/ath-mt-eclectic/)
50% Superwash Merino, 50% Tencel
Approx. 410 yds
:check Loopy Plastic Sock Blocker (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/fun-accessories/the-loopy-ewe-sock-blockers/plastic-sock-blockers/) - two in size medium
I'm looking forward to receiving my order and starting on my socks! I haven't decided on the pattern(s) I'll use yet. I have a few in mind, but I want to swatch with the yarns to see which stitch pattern looks best with each yarn.

OOOO!!! I should have thought of that for the merino I bought.
I tried the swatching, and thought they looked great, but once I got into the actual sock, found out some just don't have enough body. :lol Live and learn...even at my age.

Actually, you don't need sock blockers, but I wanted them. I asked AmyS before I ordered and she said she's knitted lots of socks and wears and washes them regularly, but doesn't use sock blockers.
I wanted them mainly to take pretty pictures of my socks and to take advantage of the discount! I also think the red plastic sock blockers are bright and fun. I like the idea of wooden sock blockers (which The Loopy Ewe also carries), but I chose plastic because I want to be able to put them to some use and abuse.

I can't tell you how brave I think you folks are, to order this lovely (but pricey) sock yarn for your first socks!
Gosh, it is expensive, but it's a rare splurge for me. I can't even remember the last time I bought yarn since mothering my three year-old and managing Crochetville both keep me so busy!
Crocheting comes pretty naturally for me, and I rarely have problems following crochet instructions. I feel like I can make anything if I put my mind to it, so I'm not afraid of good yarn! ;)
I really can't wait to see how all this gorgeous yarn works up into socks! Me, too! This is one of the reasons I picked some of the nicer yarns. I think the Fleece Artist Sea Wool in the color Angel Fish is particularly gorgeous in knit socks shown on The Loopy Ewe, so I'm very curious to see what it will look like in crocheted socks.

I finished my first sock today! I decided to use the Four Leaf Toe-ver (http://soysilk.com/free-patterns/tofutsies-4leaftover.pdf) pattern with the Chocolate Strawberry (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/sheepaints/silkbamboo/spt-s-chocolate-strawberry/) Silk Bamboo yarn by Sheepaints.
I took some pictures earlier today of the yarn I received, plus the cuff of the sock. I haven't downloaded them from the camera yet, and it's too dark to take a good picture of the finished sock. I'll take a picture tomorrow when I get home from church, and then post all the pictures so you can all see what I bought. And most importantly, what the finished sock looks like.

Just dropping in to say that I am behind already. :(
My daughter has had some health issues so I am late getting started. I did order yarn for both the ultimate crocheted socks and the intuitive shell socks. I'm leaning towards the intuitive shell socks, using Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport in the Gold Hill colorway. I even have new crochet hooks! So I think I can manage to finish by the end of May.

I just found this link: Inexpensive and Easy Sock Blockers (http://www.needletrax.com/blockers.htm).This tutorial is extremely easy, and I think it makes way cute sock blockers! It uses plastic-coated wire hangers, so you even end up with a ready-made hook at the top for hanging.
Some people block socks and some don't. I think I'll try it both ways and see how much of a difference it makes. I can see blocking making a difference in lacy knit socks, but I'm curious to see how much it will matter for crocheted socks.

I was at a knitting group last night and got to touch someone else's "Fixation" by Cascade in both knitted sock and knitted sweater form. That is some seriously stretchy yarn!! I think that would translate well into crochet since crochet does not tend to have as much "give" as knitting does.
On the down (or plus, depending on your view) side, Fixation is a larger gauged yarn than most sock yarns, so it will work up bulkier. It is soft, but if the texture of crocheted socks irritates the bottom of your feet, I don't know if the larger gauge would exasperate that issue, or if the softness of the yarn makes up for it!
I have not yet ordered my yarn...can't decide!!!! :loco I have knitted socks...know what I like in that area; but crocheted socks are a whole new thing for me. I would appreciate anyone's feedback and experience with what yarns translate well into crocheted socks.

Just a word of warning...you block your socks when they are wet/damp. Coat hangers are made of metal...are you getting where I am heading here??? Please take care that you do not end up with rust on your special socks!!! Check your metal sock-blockers regularly and toss them at the first sign of rusting.
Donna

Check your metal sock-blockers regularly and toss them at the first sign of rusting. I agree with this, but the tutorial says to use the plastic-coated wire hangers. If the hanger is new or in good shape (no nicks in the plastic coating) it should be safe. According to the tutorial, no tools are used to bend the hangers (you shape them by hand), so there shouldn't be any damage to the plastic coating when turning the hanger into a sock blocker.

I would appreciate anyone's feedback and experience with what yarns translate well into crocheted socks. I don't have the experience to tell you, but wanted to mention that you don't have to crochet socks out of all the yarn you order from the Loopy Ewe. The only requirement to participate in this CAL is ordering the yarn to crochet one pair of socks. If you want to order more yarn than that, you can crochet more socks, knit socks, make a shawl or scarf, or whatever you want. So an option is to order a couple of very different types of yarn, and if you don't like the way the first one is crocheting up into socks, save it for knit socks and use the other yarn for your crocheted pair. I hope that helps!

I only had one plastic coated hanger, so I had to use one metal one for now in order to make a pair. Most of the stores I get to no longer have those type of hangers, only the all plastic ones that don't bend. Guess I'll have to shop around on line for them.

please forgive my ignorance, but how and why do you have to block socks.

Well i have started making my first pair of socks fir the fixation yarn and WOW it is beautiful as well as soft and easy to work with. glad I ordered 4 different colors. Here is a pic of what I hve done so far. this is a cuff down pattern with a turned heel. I may try an after thought heel next.

please forgive my ignorance, but how and why do you have to block socks.
I block socks by wetting them and then gently pulling/pushing them into the shape I want them to end up in. Other folks have different methods, like using blockers or pins.
Blocking helps shape the FO. If it's lacy, blocking helps the lace to lie flat and the patterns to be clearer.
Hope that helps a bit. :)

The yarn is so pretty I had to share! L to R it is Dream in Color Classy (worsted) in Beach Fog, Scarlet Fleece Tubular in Pacific, and DIC Smooshy in Wisterious. I'm swatching the Scarlet Fleece and am leaning toward the Red Heart pattern that Lavonne used--I think the construction seems pretty straightforward and I like the stitch pattern on the top of the foot. The DIC colors are even better in person than they looked on the website. I might have to think about a sweater for myself in the Beach Fog :) Will probably use the Wisterious for a hat for my niece.
Yay :yay for this CAL and the discount!!

Here's my progress so far...
The yarn I'm using Fleece Artist - Sea Wool Bordello Sock (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/fleece-artist/sea-wool-bordello-sock/) - in the color Angelfish (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/fleece-artist/sea-wool-bordello-sock/fa-sea-wool-angel-fish/). The pattern I'm using is Toes Up Socks (http://www.baycrochet.com/patsock.htm) (South Bay Crochet / Mary Rhodes).
These are my own photos of the yarn, taken in my kitchen under the skylight.
381 382
I don't have a swift or a yarn ball winder, so I tried this Tinker Toy swift (http://www.folkcatart.com/blogs/jen/?p=742). It worked surprisingly well. I wound the ball by hand.
383 384
A progress photo. Look, it's a foot growing out of the lettuce! :lol
385
Another progress photo. The owner of the smaller pair of feet in this photo has requested a pair of socks just like mommy's. Good thing I got two skeins (at 354 yards/skein, I wasn't sure if one would be enough for a pair of crocheted socks).
386
After ripping out the heel probably six times (there seems to be an art to making a short row heel look just right), I'm finally satisfied with it. But it's a bit snug around the top, so I'm ripping it back again to add some increases on the top of the foot before the heel as mentioned here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/noricum/400355687/). I'll probably also add decreases at the back of the ankle after the heel as she mentions as well; I think I'll need them.

I have finally managed to take all the pics I wanted and get them moved from the camera to the computer.
I'll start with my pictures of the yarn I ordered.
First is the Fleece Artist Sea Wool in Rose (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/fleece-artist/sea-wool-bordello-sock/fa-sea-wool-rose/) (70% merino wool, 30% Seacell):
393
Next, The Alpaca Yarn Company Paca Peds in Teal for Two (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/the-alpaca-yarn-co/paca-peds/ay-teal-for-two/) (65% superwash wool, 20% alpaca, 15% nylon):

And 3 skeins of Noro Kureyon Sock #188 (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/noro/sock/noro-kureyon-s188/):

April 28, 2009, 11:21 PM
I also ordered Sheepaints Silk Bamboo in Chocolate Strawberry (http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/sheepaints/silkbamboo/spt-s-chocolate-strawberry/) (60% wool, 20% silk, 20% natural bamboo). I forgot to take a picture of this yarn in the skein before I used my yarn winder and swift to turn it into a ball.
I decided to use the Four-Leaf Toe-ver Sock (http://soysilk.com/free-patterns/tofutsies-4leaftover.pdf) pattern. Even though this skein contained 459 yards, I ran out of yarn. I didn't have enough to do the clover-like trim on the cuffs. I also had to make the socks a few rounds shorter than I planned in order to have enough yarn to finish them. But it's okay--they still fit just fine!
Here's a picture of the ball and part of the cuff:
396
Here's a better picture of just the cuff:
397
Here is the first completed sock. I'm not sure if this picture was before or after I adjusted the length of the foot.
398
Here is a close-up of the heel and foot:

Here is a photo comparing how the foot came out on both socks, similar but not an exact match:

Left is partial sock made according to the Heart and Sole pattern. When I did the fsc for the top of heel, I had to use the next size hook (D) and like the way it looked. So I started the second sock, on right in photo, using D hook. Had to adjust # of sts for same dimensions, but it went a lot faster. you can see the difference in size of sts in the photo.
763
Second sock on my foot, fits great.
764
second sock w/o foot :lol
After taking these photos, i washed the sock in Eucalan and laid it flat to dry. I was sad to see that it grew about an inch in length and got skinnier. But once it dried, even though it still is longer and skinnier, it fits well. the yarn relaxed and it doesn't feel as springy as it did initially. but I like the yarn and would use it again, it feels soft but sturdy and I love the color. Now to rip out the first sock and remake it with the D hook:hook
ETA: as you can see I didn't do the cuff as I tried it and didn't love the way it looked. I did a tiny sc-ch2-sc shell edging instead. Also, i experimented with doing the heel in linked dc and was able to make that work pretty easily, and like the fact that it looks the same as the sole.

Well the mirror idea didn't work, cat kept wrapping around my legs and all I got was pics of his tail (in the air :P), or his big belly, :lol.
So I tried other poses
Socks without feet 881
Closeup to show the different stitches, sc for toes and heels, hdc for bottom of foot, shell for top of foot and ankles 882
Feet up in air on rail 883
Feet with legs crossed (awkwardly) 884
Feet conversing with each other on when I was going to stop the sillyness
885
I used the Intuitive shell pattern, since it gave me a better fitting toe (I have that toe thing where my second toe is bigger or same length of the so called big toe). It also was easier to make adjustments for a more custom fit. Additionally I made the heels larger. I used Crystal Palace Panda Cotton in Toasted Almond for additional stretchability (a real word?).
Now I want to try the other yarn I bought but can't find it. I had reorganized my yarn tubs and don't know where I put it :think. I know I wound it into a cake. Oh boy, senior moments again :eek .

Wow, there are some fabulous socks here! :cheer
I finally am learning how to post pictures directly to the site, so here are mine, hopefully. :lol (Pictures are also up on my blog (http://clockework.blogspot.com/2009/05/unexpected.html).)
p.s. Which address do I use to e-mail Sheri a picture? The support one?
Wow! I like the shading effect of that yarn. Super job! They look great on you. Here are my finished socks finally.

I am not sure if there were any "special" instructions for sending photos from this CAL to The Loopy Ewe. However, if you go to www.theloopyewe.com (http://www.theloopyewe.com/) and look at the navigation bar on the right-hand side of the home page you will find a link titled "Photo Galleries." (Here is a direct link to that page: http://www.theloopyewe.com/photos/ ) If you go to that page, you will find a link included in the text of the first paragraph which will allow you to post your own photos.
Hope this helps! ;)

I thought that Sheri was going to be dropping in on this CAL and somehow taking the pics she wanted, :lol. Shows how much I know.

This is supposed to be a progress picture. I crocheted my sock to this point, and decided I needed two more rows in the body of the foot, so I frogged it back past the gusset increases. :(
Nevertheless, I have re-crocheted it to this point, and now it fits perfectly. I'm getting ready to start the cuff.

I joined the CAL late in the game but I just finished the first sock of my pair. I used Sugar Bunny Blvd Emeline. The color is Old Navy. The fiber content is 55% Bamboo, 24% Cotton, 21% elastic. I used the Origami Turkish Sock pattern. The combination of the sock yarn and the stitch pattern feels really comfy on my feet.
Here's a pic:

FYI, posted soc pic on Loopy Ewe. Got email that they have started a new section and my socks were posted there. When I uploaded the pic I chose the option for the decision of what section to put it in, up to them. Hope you all post your wonderful, colorful socks there too!

Just wanted to add a note of encouragement! Your socks all look great, I just love the colors and patterns you've all created. I meant to join on the last day, but got a note at that time that my LYS was closing so I decided my budget busting would be best done at the closeout sale. I will order from the loopy ewe in the future though...
Great Job everyone!! Very inspiring!!

How are everyone's socks coming along? Mine got put on hold due to a crazy week or two around my house...and then my friend had a baby and a BICO needed to be whipped up as a baby gift. But back to my socks I must get before the deadline gets here!! EEK!
Hopefully I will have something to show off in the next day or two.

I finished one sock! Yay. That's probably all I'll finish this month, but I've started the second one. It's my own pattern, so I can't delay too long--have to make the second one while I can remember what I did.

I completely meant to work on socks for this. I actually have the hank wound from Loopy Ewe, but Time and work got in my way. But I am hoping that even though I am not going to be successfully finishing the socks by the end of this month... I will get to them in the next month during all my travels around the area with the family! :) I will post when they are done!

I did finish my socks a few weeks ago, and just sewed in the ends this week, so they are completely done now. I want to get my husband to take a photo of them on my feet to post in the other thread. Who would've thought it would be so hard to take a pic of your own feet? :lol Also, i never would've thought I'd crochet socks, but I enjoyed it. Thanks for the CAL, Amy and Donna and the Loopy Ewe! :cheer

I didn't actually finish a pair of socks, but I got one done! (And no, there's no way I'll finish the other in one day, oh well). This is my very first ever crochet project, so I'm actually quite proud of myself for getting it done. It's not the most elegant work - I think I started over 10 times before getting the hang of it. It's also a little loose. But I think they will make nice comfy house socks for the winter.
Edited to add: I'm so happy that I took part in this CAL, even if I won't finish a pair by the end of May (I'm still on the toe section of the second sock). This has really improved my crocheting skills, including how to read a pattern. I started a shawl a couple of months ago which never went anywhere, since I didn't have enough confidence in my crocheting skills. Now I think I'm ready to go back to that project!

Thank you! I think the second one will go much faster now that I've gotten the hang of it. I even think I could have gotten it done by the deadline if I hadn't been so busy at work.

Your sock is lovely and your accomplishing a goal even greater. Be proud of yourself, I am very impressed with your ability. Try a smaller hook next time it should tighten the stitches for you.:clap

Thanks so much for your kind words! I did think about switching to a smaller hook, but I had started over so many times that I got lazy. They fit my foot fine, it's the cuff that is the problem, so I think I just need to do fewer pattern repeats around my leg in order to get it to fit better.

I'm running behind, but I haven't given up! I will get it done and get photos to the Loopy Ewe...they were so nice to sponsor this CAL. Unfortunately, in May life has pretty much exploded in my household :help and so crocheted socks got put on the back burner. :thair

What did you think of the heel in the pattern?

she did a great job, those were the socks I made also and I thought the heel was a tad small, so I increased the number of rows.
