Since I don't know how to insert images, I have attached a link to a pic on my Flickr account. A friend received this afghan as a gift for her daughter and I just love it. It appears to be made in two pieces, or with the diamond shaped black placed over the striped colors. I wonder if anyone has a clue what the name of this pattern it?? I appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks,
Caroline

Looks like celtic crochet to me. There is a book on Amazon that would show you how to do this kind of thing. Unfortunately, the book costs over $90. I had it at one time, but sold it (for a lot less than $90.)There is another book, Celtic Crochet for Home Accessories I think it's called. Costs a lot less, isn't quite as useful, but probably would give you the general principles of celtic crochet. Or google the term = maybe there's another book out there somewhere.

It looks to me like they made the background bits in rows of colour and then used surface crochet to get the "leading" in place.

The black 'leading' might have been made with chain loops on one side of the vertical strips, then on the other side, connecting them to the first row of loops as you go. The "X" shapes look (to me) like they lay across the top of the colored part.

Yes, the chain loops do lay over the striped background. I just love it. Maybe I'll have to improvise.
